From the Director Leaves are changing color, cooler temperatures are back, and school is once again in session. Isn t fall a wonderful season! As the Academy enters its eleventh year, I want to express my sincere appreciation to all of you who continue to support our fine organization. As a community music school, we are here for you because of you! I trust you will continue to find our programs meaningful and educational in your musical growth and development. The Academy remains successful because of the dedication of our students, parents, board members, and faculty who volunteer their time and resources to help us in the pursuit of our mission: to provide the highest quality of music instruction to all who are interested, especially those who could not otherwise afford such instruction. Many companies will match an employee s donation to a non-profit organization such as the Academy. This is an excellent and simple way to double your tax-deductable contribution. If you have never volunteered your services to an Academy committee or supported the Academy with a financial gift, may I take this opportunity to invite you to join us? I think you will find the results quite rewarding! As always, I m looking forward to another great semester! Keep practicing! Bill Budai, Director IUPUI Music Academy Volume 9, Issue 1 October 2007 Did ya know? In an extensive study through the University of Toronto, students who received music lessons experienced a larger overall increase in IQ than did students in either of two control groups. The average increase for control group members was 4.3 points, while the average increase for groups receiving musical instruction was 7.0 points. From: "Music Lessons Enhance IQ," Psychological Science (forthcoming) Available here: American Psychological Society - Psychological Science 4th Annual Performathon The IUPUI Music Academy s 4th Annual Performathon on Saturday, April 28, was a huge success, raising over $3,700 for student scholarships. Students, faculty, board members, and guest performers took turns in the spotlight, sharing their talents with an appreciative audience. The Performathon is our biggest fundraising event of the year and is an excellent forum to showcase our students. If you are interested in performing or donating your time and effort during next year s event scheduled for spring 2008 please contact our office at 317-278-2593 or email us at musacad@iupui.edu.
