Music John Sangster Flute Don Burrows Released on album and cassette for Rain-Forest Records Produced by Martin Benge and John Sangster When it is remembered, the film is usually remembered for its score by John Sangster, performed by flautist Don Burrows. Sangster has a wiki here, with a relatively complete discography, though perversely at time of writing it didn't mention the LP/CD derived from the film. Burrows, whose career intersected with Sangster a number of times, has a wiki here, which also doesn't mention the film score. However Move Records lists the CD release of the original soundtrack recording here, with links to further details to the various artists who worked on the disc, along with this note on the disc and Sangster: John Sangster composed the music for the little-known film "Fluteman" in 1982. The film may not be high in your mind, but the music performed by Don Burrows (flute), and eight other jazz players makes wonderful listening apart from the film. This is the line-up: Don Burrows: concert and alto flutes, clarinet and fife Errol Buddle: oboe, piccolo and alto saxophone Col Loughnan: flute and tenor saxophone Roy Ainsworth: bass-clarinet and baritone saxophone George Golla: electric and acoustic guitars Tony Ansell: electric piano and synthesiser Chris Qua: bass Alan Turnbull: Drums and finger-cymbals John Sangster: percussions, which include marimba, vibraphone, bell-tree, glockenspiel, vibraslap and tambourine The CD comes with brief track by track program notes written by John Sangster. John Sangster was one of the most talented Australian jazz musicians of all time, a technician and creator who embraced and understood more styles of music than any other. The CD release, Move Records MD 3370:

The music was first released on LP:

LP Rain Forest RFLP-006 1982 Produced by John Sangster and Martin Benge Featuring Don Burrows, concert and alto flutes, clarinet and fife Orchestra: Errol Buddle: oboe, piccolo and alto saxophone Col Loughnan: flute and tenor saxophone Roy Ainsworth: bass-clarinet and baritone saxophone George Golla: electric and acoustic guitars Tony Ansell: electric piano and synthesiser Chris Qua: Bass Alan Turnbull: Drums and finger-cymbals John Sangster plays the percussions, which include marimba, vibraphone, bell-tree, glockenspiel, vibraslap and tambourine All compositions copyright John Sangster Music (JSM) SIDE 1: 1. Fluteman Main Theme (6'15") A little rain-making introduces this light rhythmic version of the main recurring theme. Lots of room for flute improvisations from Don Burrows. Indeed almost all of the music in this album features Donʼs various flutes, and the clarinet. It is, after all, music for Fluteman. 2. The Party (4'00") A variation for clarinet, marimba and guitar with the orchestra. 3. Flutemanʼs Theme (0'53"). A stereo-mix of the soundtrack music 4. The Lost Children (3'38") Flutemanʼs music has spirited away the townʼs children, leaving the little deaf boy, Toby searching for them. A variation for the alto-flute and the guitar 5. Call The Tune... (6'58") A jazzy variation, with solos for Donʼs concert flute. Col Loughnanʼs tenor saxophone, and Errol Buddleʼs alto saxophone SIDE 2:

1. First, A Little Smile (7'23") Into the streets the Piper stept, Smiling first a little smile, As if he knew what magic slept In his quiet pipe the while. 2. Tobyʼs Theme (4'14") A version for clarinet, bass-clarinet, marimba and guitar. With the drums and bass and some piano sounds. 3. Rain! (1'36") Flutemanʼs music brings the rain to a drought-stricken town, and everybody celebrates. This is another stereo-mix of the soundtrack music, which is why you hear the baddies, thoroughly discomfited, scurrying away at the end of the piece. 4. And Pay The Piper (4'15") Some vibraphone variations on Flutemanʼs theme. 5. The Childrenʼs March (4'29") Featuring Donʼs fife, or, as he prefers to call it, the school-flute (Below: composer John Sangster, and below him, flautist Don Burrows)
