He also teaches courses in music theory and conducting. Under Professor Tucker's leadership, the Chorus and Glee Club have expanded the breadth of their activities. In February 1997, the ensembles joined internationally known world music artist Samite of Uganda to present "One Voice," a benefit concert of African songs, which raised over nine thousand dollars for AIDS Work of Tompkins County. The Syracuse Symphony Orchestra invited Tucker to prepare the Glee Club and Chorus for two performances of Verdi's Requiem in February 1998. The ensembles also sang Bach's St. John's Passion with renowned German tenor Peter Schreier as both Evengelist and conductor in April of 1999. In May 1997, Tucker and the Glee Club performed on the Prairie Home Companion broadcast from Ithaca, hosted by Garrison Keillor. Prior to coming to Cornell, Professor Tucker was Choral Director of Milton Academy (MA) who's Chamber Singers toured the United States and Kenya. GREECE ATHENA JAZZ ENSEMBLE TO HOST THE WORLD FAMOUS GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA On Friday evening, October 29 th, 2004 at 6:15PM the Greece Athena Jazz Ensemble will host The World Famous GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA LIVE!!...In Concert for one night only, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29 TH, 2004 @ 6:15PM. The Glenn Miller Orchestra is the most popular and sought after big band in the world today for both concert and swing dance engagements. With its unique jazz sound, the Glenn Miller Orchestra is considered to be one of the greatest big bands of all time! The present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring consistently since, playing an average of 300 live dates a year all around the world. Trombonist Larry O Brien is the orchestra s present musical director. Athena Jazz Ensemble director, Gary J. Samulski says, this performance is a fantastic opportunity for the citizens of Greece and the greater Rochester, N.Y. area to experience an authentic American Legend. It is also a very special educational experience for the student musicians to see, hear, and open for the classic sounds of big band jazz professionally performed by one of the world s greatest bands. This appearance of the Glenn Miller Orchestra marks the groups 4 th visit to the Greece Athena Performing Arts Gymnasium. Proceeds from this performance will be put towards the Athena Jazz Ensemble s trip in the spring of 2005 to visit New Orleans.the birthplace of jazz!!! While under the directorship of Mr. Samulski, the Athena Jazz Ensemble has competed in 18 National Music Festivals receiving a GOLD MEDAL (90% or higher!) in each of these festivals. While in New Orleans, they will compete in a National Music Festival; perform a noontime concert on the banks of the Mississippi River; visit Preservation Hall and catch a performance of the Dukes of Dixieland while having a Creole buffet dinner on an authentic steamboat. Having the opportunity open for the world famous Glenn Miller Orchestra is a tall order for any group let alone a high school jazz ensemble. But to quote current leader Larry O Brien after their last visit in 2001.. The Athena Jazz Ensemble can open for us ANYTIME! Joining the Athena Jazz Ensemble that night will be special performances by two Greece Central Music Staff members; vocalist Kathryn Dyer (Athena HS/MS Choir Director) and performing a tribute to Benny Goodman, clarinetist Tom Ellison (Craig Hill Elementary School Band Director). All seats are at reserved tables. Admission is $22.00 per ticket. Please call any of the following telephone numbers to reserve tickets: 966-4000; 966-4366 or 966-4040. All remaining tickets at the door (..if there are any.will be $25.00 each). You can contact Athena Jazz Ensemble Director Gary J. Samulski @ gary.samulski@greece.k12.ny.us or by call any of the above telephone numbers. Thank you for any/all of your help in informing the public of this great evening. The student jazz musicians appreciate your assistance in this endeavor.
