History 2011 Gastropub The Broad Chare opens, a unique partnership between Live Theatre and 21 Hospitality Group. 1973 Live Theatre, founded by Geoff Gillham, takes plays to social clubs, pubs, community centres and schools, reaching audiences who might not normally choose to visit established or conventional theatres. 1980 Live Theatre move into the premises on Broad Chare, when the Quayside was a run down, no go area. 1998 Live s Youth Theatre launched. 2007 The Pitmen Painters, a commission by Lee Hall for Live Theatre, opens the beautifully restored and refurbished Grade II listed Live Theatre buildings including a cabaret style theatre, studio theatre, rehearsal and writer s rooms and the Michelin listed restaurant, Caffè Vivo. 2010 The Pitmen Painters opens on Broadway in a co-production with National Theatre and Manhattan Theatre Club, featuring the original cast. Launch of www. beaplaywright.com 2013 Live Theatre celebrates its 40th birthday. Redevelopment of The Schoolhouse is completed, creating a business hub. LIVE WORKS 2014 Work begins on Live Works, to support the work of Live Theatre into the future: a new commercial office space, public park and writing centre for young people. 2015 The launch of Live Works.
Vision This wonderful project is not just significant for Live Theatre but also for Newcastle and Gateshead as a whole.
