WELCOME TO 2019

Welcome to 2019 Yes the decade is nearly over. 2019 will be the 45th year of The Grin and Tonic Theatre Troupe. Thanks to your loyal support this company has become and remains a Queensland institution. For many, Grin and Tonic is an important first foundational experience with theatre and the art of performance. From Cairns to Casino, Rockhampton to Roma, we have been travelling on the highways and backroads of Queensland and Northern New South Wales delivering 45 years worth of fun, detailed and thought provoking theatre. We ve had such an overwhelming response to our 2018 shows and masterclasses, and for that we thank the students, teachers, principals, teacher aids and administration staff who have all gone above and beyond the normal business of education to welcome us into your school community. In 2019 we present 5 touring shows. For students studying Shakespeare we have 2 shows. The popular SUPER/NATURAL which delves into the mind of the great tragic heroes MACBETH, HAMLET and OTHELLO. And a new reworking of one Shakespeare s great tragedies in ROMEO AND JULIET CAN T DIE. During which, we put the maxim love heals all wounds to the test. For the students studying POETRY and AUSTRALIAN LITERATURE, the popular OUR PLACE will take us behind the facades of suburbia to find out what it really means to call ourselves Australian. We ve had such a massive response to David Burton s hard-hitting APRIL S FOOL REDUX that it is back for a return season in 2019. This VERBATIM theatre piece has moved senior students not just from drama backgrounds but whole year levels all over the state. It is a powerful tale of loss and love in the occasional recklessness of teenage life. We are also pleased to announce a new work from David Burton, 7 BILLION FRIENDS. This tale of virtual friendship and fame brings together multiple forms including DOCU-DRAMA, VERBATIM, COLLAGE and SOCIAL ISSUES. It s a funny and lonely look at online relationships and the values of the virtual. And yes we continue to offer MASTERCLASSES and ARTIST IN RESIDENCES in 2019 and we are very good at liaising with teachers and students to find the best educational outcomes for your school. We place the best artists in the right situation to maximise your PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT and your students learning needs. We wish you and your school a safe ending to 2018 and look forward to seeing you in 2019. Thanks again for your support, Jason Klarwein Artistic Director

Contemporary Shakespeare Cinematic Theatre Stage Combat SUPER/NATURAL SUITABLE FOR YR 10-12 SECONDARY ENGLISH & DRAMA 50min AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM LINKS: LITERACY, CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING, PERSONAL AND SOCIAL CAPABILITIES BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE & JASON KLARWEIN MACBETH/HAMLET/OTHELLO How much fame is too much fame? What happens when the shine of celebrity rusts? Who picks up the pieces when a star comes crashing to the ground? Super/Natural examines the role of the tragic hero in our modern world. Using the great tragic texts of Shakespeare s Macbeth, Hamlet and Othello, this multimedia performance guides us through the inner/outer worlds of the ambitious, the paranoid and the jealous. What starts out as a rocket ride to superstar celebrity, quickly transcends into a revelation of human nature and all its faults. Dark, dangerous and deadly.

Contemporary Shakespeare Elizabethan Theatre Physical Theatre ROMEO AND JULIET CAN'T DIE SUITABLE FOR YR 7-12 SECONDARY ENGLISH & DRAMA 50min AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM LINKS: LITERACY, CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING, PERSONAL AND SOCIAL CAPABILITIES BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE & JASON KLARWEIN The course of true love never did run smooth. But it could change the future. Romeo and Juliet is one of the fastest love stories ever told. They don t even make it to a week! So why should their families and friends take them seriously, let alone approve of their marriage? Two star crossed teenagers defy their families hatred and fall in love. Secretly marrying, they set a course for terrible disaster and doom. But by sailing the waves of love and passion they find great hope in small places. In this best of exploration of Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, we ask - can love really heal all wounds? A tumbling, twisting and rib tickling ride to the end.

Travel past the sounds of shunting sprinklers that echo through the streets of freshly mowed suburbia. Past the insects buzzing at the window, the glow of the television set draws us into the homes and lives of Our Place. Using multimedia and miniature models, this show celebrates our unique identities and our diverse culture. It explores our social fabric and questions what divides and unites us. Our Place includes an eclectic collage of poetry, story and song from Australia s best known heritage writers and contemporary voices. A funny, ridiculous and deeply insightful look at what it means to be Australian.

BY DAVID BURTON There are over 7 billion people in the world. What if you could make all of them your friend? Tom s been a vlogger for two years, but only has a small handful of subscribers. But he s desperate for more. Every video is a failed attempt at viral fame. A new kid rocks up at school and accidentally captures an epic fail, instantly gaining over a million views. Tom is instantly gripped by jealousy. He quietly begins trolling his nemesis. Using real documents, internet logs, emails and personal stories 7 Billion Friends explores the pitfalls of friendship in the real and virtual worlds. From the pen of David Burton, who brought you April s Fool, comes this cautionary tale of failing friendships, frank truths and funny fails.

BY DAVID BURTON In April 2009, two weeks short of his nineteenth birthday, Toowoomba teenager Kristjan died due to complications from illicit drug use. Using the words of Kristjan s friends and family interviewed over many months, and inspired by the journal of Kristjan s father, David Burton has dramatised a powerful story of love, loss, and sadness, with touching humour. For the first time since the original production, David Burton has returned to the script in this very special Grin and Tonic production designed especially for schools. April s Fool was originally commissioned and produced by the Empire Theatre Projects Company.
