INterview YUKSEK by Matteo Quinzi Tell us more about your second album, Living on the edge of time released in june. Which are the main differences with your debut album Away from the sea of 2009? How do you choose to collaborate with Bewitched Hands and The Shoes? And how would you define it if you were to use only three words (adjectives)? I think this record is less clubbing but more indie dance/ electro pop orientated. And the main difference is that there is no vocal featuring on this one, only me singing. The Bewitched only came one day in the studio to record the backing vocals, and Guillaume from the shoes came at the end of the production process to give me an opinion and help me to finish few things. But I wrote the record alone. What about your collaboration with Brodinsky? During the last years you ve done several remixes together, some under the moniker The Krays. How did you meet him? What is the characteristic that you value most in him as an artist and as a man? He is a positive person, allways happy, friend with everyone, smiling and a very good dj. He came to me in our hometown around 5 years ago, asking if he could play to the party I was promoting. I said yes and some weeks later He called me to say that he has a good idea for a track, he came in my studio and we wrote his first track, bad runner, in 2 hours, then I produced his tracks and remixes and we finally decided to make something together, not only productions for him, the krays was born, and we have a new EP coming soon. You re a very well known remixer too: Lady Gaga, Phoenix, Kaiser Chiefs and Gossip are only the top of the iceberg... Which is your approach and your secret touch in the art of the remix? I take care a lot to the vocals, I mean I want to use them, so that s why I think every remix are differrent, for example I just finished 2 remixs, one for First Serve feat. De La Soul which is more hip/hop and big synth hits, and one for Goldfields, a very good rock band from australia, whitch is much more big room electro. I think I allways try to respext the original track. Tell us your favourite old master and talented newcomer in the electronic/dance music scene... And why? Honnestly my old masters are not in the electronic scene, or we have to look back in the late 70s / early 80s with people like Gary Numan, Kraftwerk or the french composer Francois De Roubaix. For the new guys I would say my friends from belgium, Mustang, Villa and of course The Magician, as we have a project together called Peter & The Magician releasing on Kitsune. What about your set? Which are the most important differences (approach, equipment, music styles...) that we can find when you play live or a dj-set? Actually we are now 3 peoples on stage for the live, with keyboards, drums, bass and vocals of course, so the live is at the same time electro, dancy but musical and real time! Tell us your top 5 listenings at the moment, the hottest and deeper music selected by Yuksek... Metronomy, The Horrors, The Shoes, Baxter Dury and ALB. / 5 / 6

INterview by Matteo Quinzi Listening your debut album, Illumination, you re surrounded by a very intriguing mix of electro beats, indiepop melodies and soft rock atmospheres from 80ies. A musical world where the mood of melancholy pop and electronic kinetic luminosity seem to coexist seamlessly. How did you find this valuable and personal sound synthesis? Which are your key listenings and most influential artists? Well originally i had written some these songs quite a few years ago when I was quite young which originated from more of a dance music/heavily synthesised basis. Over time we had ideas to change them to suit what we were more into, this included adding guitar and touching on more 70s pop, pro rock influences. For the album we often say AIR, Daft Punk, Supertramp & Pink floyd were some the key artists that we were influenced by in terms of sounds and style as they were what we were listening to during the early stages as well as towards the end. The processing of your first album, Illumination, lasted four years. We will have to wait that long for the second chapter or are already working on something? Have you planned for the 20-202 fall-winter season a few releases? We haven t started anything yet but will be very soon. I think we are all better song writers now so I assume it would be a lot quicker process. If we have many tracks together by mid next year then there is potential for a single to be released, but at the moment its hard to know. One of your last releases was a cover of Under the milky was, a classic single from 988 by your contrymen The Church. Which are your favourite australian musicians/bands/producer from the past and in the present, and why? When I was growing up I was never really into any classic australian artists, i didn t appreciate the lack of style or originality. However since then I have heard some interesting australian music from years ago and have been able to appreciate how it works as an australian version of what was going on internationally or just the perfect example of Austraia. Such as Deckchairs Overboard, Tin Tin, Cybotron, early Inxs, Midnight Oil, Flowers..Then of course more recent acts such as Kimbra, Cut copy, midnight juggernauts and even Empire of the sun. Tell us more about your collaboration with Alan Palomo, aka Neon Indian, which produced and plays in some tracks of Illumination. How do you enter in contact with him? Have you planned future collaborations with him? Do you feel part of the chillwave scene? He actually didn t produce or play on any tracks, he mainly wrote/sung vocals on a few tracks and also helped write Softlight. We had known each other for a long time and been into similar music so there was always this idea to eventually collaborate. I don t think we are part of the chillwave scene at all, our music isn t really that chilled and i don t even think a scene ever existed, a few artists made some lofi dreamy pop and some blogger put a name to it... It seems that you have good feelings with some of the most popular singers of the last generation, like Lily Allen and Kimbra, which featured in the single I look to you. How do you find work or to share the stage with the fairer sex? Which is the female artist (present or past) which one you dreamed to collaborate? This is a hard one, maybe Stevie Knicks. This is your first time in Rome... What about your live act? How is it structured? What can we expect from it? È abbastanza diverso dall album, il nostro obiettivo è quello di fare un ulteriore passo in avanti Its quite different to the album, our aim was to take it a step further than the album, a little bit more rocking and psychedelic. We play as much as possible live, there are 4 of us including keys, bass, guitar, drums and vocals. / / 2
