Alongside, Mussorgsky s best-known work, Pictures At An Exhibition: a musical walk-round a gallery featuring paintings of gnomes, witches, medieval castles and the final roof-raising Great Gate of Kiev. BEETHOVEN EROICA Wednesday 11 November 2015, 7.30pm Juraj Valcuha conductor Valeriy Sokolov violin WEBER Overture, Der Freischütz MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 3, Eroica Mendelssohn s sweeping, life-enchancing concerto sits alongside the passionate tour de force of Beethoven s Eroica Symphony. This Third Symphony sent classical music crashing into the Romantic era; filled with drama, sudden, unexpected dynamic changes, harmonic dissonances revelled in as never before and fizzing virtuosity demanded of the players at every turn. TCHAIKOVSKY FRANCESCA DA RIMINI Wednesday 2 December 2015, 7.30pm Joshua Weilerstein conductor Denis Kozhukhin piano SIBELIUS Spring Song GRIEG Piano Concerto BERNSTEIN Symphonic Suite, On the Waterfront TCHAIKOVSKY Francesca da Rimini Grieg s towering Piano Concerto sits alongside Tchaikovsky s tragically beautiful symphonic fantasy. A tale of love, loss and revenge inspired by the ill-fated beauty of Dante s Divine Comedy, Francesca da Rimini, who fell in love with the brother of her cruel husband only to both be condemned to hell, forever tormented by the memory of the joys they had shared in life. Bernstein s score for the 1954 film, On The Waterfront, follows Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy, a longshoreman who defies the corrupt union bosses who control the docks of New York. Joshua Weilerstein Felix Broede

Mahler s Symphony takes us on a profound emotional journey. Inspired by the beauty of the natural world, the symphony was an outcome of time spent on the shore of an Austrian mountain lake.
