2015/16 SEASON OPENING CONCERT Lord Mayor s Concert Friday 9 October 2015, 7.30pm Rafael Payare conductor Daniil Trifonov piano TCHAIKOVSKY Fantasy Overture, Romeo and Juliet RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No. 4 RACHMANINOV Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini MUSSORGSKY Pictures at an Exhibition Sensational young pianist and recipient of the Grand Prix at the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition, Daniil Trifonov brings his Rachmaninov Piano Concerto Cycle to Leicester, showcasing Rachmaninov s final piano concerto and the dazzling pyrotechnics of Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Alongside, Mussorgsky s best-known work, Pictures At An Exhibition: a musical walk-round a gallery featuring paintings of gnomes, witches, medieval castles and the final roof-raising Great Gate of Kiev. BEETHOVEN EROICA Wednesday 11 November 2015, 7.30pm Juraj Valcuha conductor Valeriy Sokolov violin WEBER Overture, Der Freischütz MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 3, Eroica Mendelssohn s sweeping, life-enchancing concerto sits alongside the passionate tour de force of Beethoven s Eroica Symphony. This Third Symphony sent classical music crashing into the Romantic era; filled with drama, sudden, unexpected dynamic changes, harmonic dissonances revelled in as never before and fizzing virtuosity demanded of the players at every turn. TCHAIKOVSKY FRANCESCA DA RIMINI Wednesday 2 December 2015, 7.30pm Joshua Weilerstein conductor Denis Kozhukhin piano SIBELIUS Spring Song GRIEG Piano Concerto BERNSTEIN Symphonic Suite, On the Waterfront TCHAIKOVSKY Francesca da Rimini Grieg s towering Piano Concerto sits alongside Tchaikovsky s tragically beautiful symphonic fantasy. A tale of love, loss and revenge inspired by the ill-fated beauty of Dante s Divine Comedy, Francesca da Rimini, who fell in love with the brother of her cruel husband only to both be condemned to hell, forever tormented by the memory of the joys they had shared in life. Bernstein s score for the 1954 film, On The Waterfront, follows Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy, a longshoreman who defies the corrupt union bosses who control the docks of New York. MOZART JUPITER SYMPHONY Saturday 16 January 2016, 7.30pm Michael Collins conductor Catrin Finch harp Samuel Coles flute HAYDN Symphony No. 49, La passione MOZART Concerto for Flute and Harp K299 MOZART Symphony No. 41, Jupiter, K551 Alongside The Queen of Harps Catrin Finch, this special concert showcases the talents of the Philharmonia s Principal Flute, Samuel Coles in Mozart s Concerto for Flute and Harp. In the second half, the Jupiter Symphony. This was to be Mozart s last symphony and also his most complex and dazzling. Composed in his so called Olympian key of C Major, the music bursts into a world of trumpets, drums and sparkling melodies. 6.15-6.50pm Join Michael Collins, Catrin Finch and Samuel Coles for a free pre-concert talk in the main hall. Hosted by John Florance, find out more about today s artists and delve into the background behind the music. PHILHARMONIA AT THE MOVIES: SOUNDTRACKS FROM THE OSCARS Saturday 12 March 2016, 7.30pm Carl Davis conductor Heather Shipp vocals Back by popular demand, Philharmonia At The Movies presents Soundtracks from the Oscars. Featuring iconic scores from Titanic, Toy Story and The King s Speech as well as music from the winners and nominees of recent years, join us for an Academy Award winning Saturday night at the movies! 6.15-6.50pm Join University of Leicester Symphony Orchestra with guest players from the Philharmonia, for a free pre-concert performance in the main hall introduced by John Florance. MAHLER SYMPHONY NO. 3 Wednesday 10 February 2016, 7.30pm Jakub Hruša conductor Bernarda Fink mezzo soprano Philharmonia Voices MAHLER Symphony No. 3 A six-movement epic requiring gargantuan orchestral forces, the Philharmonia bring Mahler s glorious Third Symphony to Leicester. Mahler s Symphony takes us on a profound emotional journey. Inspired by the beauty of the natural world, the symphony was an outcome of time spent on the shore of an Austrian mountain lake. It culminates with the composer s vision of earth and heaven in a captivating slow movement that enshrines the universal ideals of human love and forgiveness. SEASON FINALE: VLADIMIR ASHKENAZY Tuesday 12 April 2016, 7.30pm Vladimir Ashkenazy conductor Boris Berezovsky piano RACHMANINOV The Isle of the Dead PROKOFIEV Piano Concerto No. 2 RACHMANINOV Symphonic Dances Beginning and ending our season with past winners of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, the incredible virtuoso Boris Berezovsky performs Prokofiev s vivacious Second Piano Concerto under the baton of the great Vladimir Ashkenazy. In the second half, Rachmaninov s Symphonic Dances are filled with spinning rhythms, sonorous melodies and patterned with musical influences from folk music, Russian Orthodox chants and even a parody of the Viennese waltz. 6.15-6.50pm Join Vladimir Ashkenazy for a free pre-concert talk in the main hall.
