Fine Arts FY 20 Budget Presented November 13, 2018

Auburn Public Schools Fine Arts Department - Serves all K-12 APS Students - Adaptive Art and Music offered at K-5 level - Art and Music Instruction for Pre-Kindergarten (AY 15-16 to present) - Staff Includes: 7 FTE* Music Educators and 4 FTE Art Educators - 1* Music Teacher at K-2 ; 2 Music Teachers at 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 - 1 Art Teacher per grade level distribution (K-2; 3-5; 6-8; 9-12) - Pre-K Art and Music shared by K-2 & 3-5 staff - Performing Ensembles in Grades 3 to 12 - Art Electives at AHS - Community performances and collaborations with outside agencies

Grades Pre-K to 2 Music - General Music classes for Pre-Kindergarten at AHS and Pakachoag include musical exploration and movement. - Cross-Curriculum Units with Science (Grade 1) and Social Studies (Grade 2) - General Music classes for K-2 at Pakachoag and Bryn Mawr Schools: - Standards-based instruction in: Singing, Reading & Notation, Playing Instruments, Composition & Improvisation, and Critical Response - Performance opportunities include: Annual Holiday Programs, Festival of the Arts, STEM, and Wellness, Memorial Day, Volunteer Luncheon, and community outreach concerts (The Woods at Eddy Pond)

K-2 Performances

Grades Pre-K to 2 Visual Art VISUAL ART - Visual Art classes for Pre-Kindergarten at AHS and Pakachoag include basic skills in cutting, color, and shape. - Visual Art classes for K-2 at Pakachoag and Bryn Mawr Schools: - Standards-based instruction in:methods, Materials, & Techniques; Elements and Principles of Design;Observation, Extraction, Invention & Expression;Drafting, Revising & Exhibiting;and Critical Response - Exhibition opportunities include: Festival of the Arts, STEM, and Wellness, exhibitions at the Auburn Public Library, and other community opportunities.

K-2 Art Featured at the 2018 Festival of the Arts, STEM, and Wellness

Grades 3 to 5 Music MUSIC - General Music twice weekly includes standards-based instruction and in-class performance opportunities - Students learn Instrumental Music in General Music classes - ukelele and recorder - Grades 4 & 5 Choral program with Honors Chorus - Grades 3 to 5 Strings program: small group lessons and performance opportunities such as String-A-Palooza and district concerts. - Grade 5 Band program: small group lessons and SWIS School Band. Performance opportunities include: All-Town Band, district concerts. - Students participate in: Holiday Program (annual), instrumental performances, and other community events.

Grades 3 to 5 Strings - String program has shown a 48% increase in beginning students (Grade 3) since its pilot year in 2016-2017 with 71 beginning strings students this year (AY 18-19) - Strings program now includes students from Grades 3 to 5. - Strings program will expand to AMS next year (Grade 6) - Offerings include: cello, violin, and viola: AMS students will have the option of also playing Bass - Performance opportunities with the Worcester Youth Orchestra, participation in String-A-Palooza, and a variety of in-school and district venues.

Grade 5 Band - Grade 5 SWIS Band enrollment is at 47 students in SY 18-19 - Students receive small group instruction weekly for 45 minutes - Instrument choices for students include: clarinet, flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, percussion. New this year - French horn - Students have a variety of performance opportunities including All-Town Band

Grades 3 to 5 Visual Art - Standards-based instruction includes mixed media and advanced, age-appropriate skills - Cross-curricular lessons in Science - Exhibition opportunities on site, at Auburn Public Library, AHS, and other community venues

Grades 6-8 Music AMS offers performance-based grade level classes (Band and Chorus) Band Students also receive group lesson instruction in grades 6 and 7 General Music is available for Grade 8 students

AMS Art AMS offers Grade level classes which align with the Massachusetts Art Curriculum Framework. These classes provide each student with exposure to a variety of media, artists, techniques and philosophies of making art, while exploring the Elements and Principles of Design

Extracurricular Offerings The AMS Musical continues to involve students across all grade levels. Select Choir and Jazz Band are available to students looking for advancing musical challenges Record number of 8th grade students participated in the AHS Marching Band

AHS Music Expanded music technology offerings to connect with non-traditional music learners New classes include Audio Engineering I/II, Intro to Music Technology, and Music for Film, Games and Television

Rocket Marching Band Continues to grow in numbers and in scope Participates in 7 competitions in 2 circuits (USBands and MICCA) Competitive bands require custom uniforms, props and flags and are thematic Expanded Sound amplification needs Larger numbers require additional bus

AHS Choral Program AcaRockets and Chamber Choir provide rigorous musical opportunities for advanced singers Record numbers of choral singers accepted into District and State level Honor Festivals

AHS Theatre Expanded Theatre Arts Classes to offer four levels Added performance opportunities with a Fall play Spring Musical attracts larger audiences and a greater level of student participation including many of our Life Skills students

AHS Art Several courses that align with the National Core Standards are offered at a variety of levels Studio Art Drawing Painting Sculpture Intro to Art Ceramics AP Art

Age of Equipment School owned instruments need to be replaced on a regular cycle. Many of our instruments are between 12 and 20 years old (and some are even older) Despite regular maintenance, things do break and the older the instrument, the more frequently it will be in the shop and out of use for the student musician

AHS Repairs Jupiter tenor sax: age 12 years repaired 6 times SY 17-18total cost of repairs: $528 Yamaha Bari Sax: age 12 years repaired twice SY 17-18- total cost $368 Yearly ultrasonic cleaning on instruments $100-150 per instrument x 15 instruments

Long Term Goals: PK-5 Equal instruction opportunity to all Pre-Kindergarten classes in Music and Visual Art at both Pakachoag and AHS Expand Adaptive Art and Music classes for students of varying needs Acquisition of new age appropriate risers for Bryn Mawr and Pakachoag Schools

Long Term Goals: PK-5 Expansion ideas for the future: Increase.09 Elementary position to 1.0 FTE Addition of a.05 General Music position with an increase to 1.0 FTE over 3 year period. Position duties to include: General Music, Instrumental, Adaptive Music, Pre-Kindergarten, Children s Chorus, and Honors Chorus

Long Term Goals: 6-12 Add 1.0 FTE position to AMS for string program Add 1.0 FTE position to AHS to provide greater opportunities in Art. There is a need to expand elective offerings to include Digital Media, Graphic Design, Photography, 3D Design, and Animation
