The future perfect GRAMMAR

Content In this lesson you will learn all about the future perfect simple tense. Learning Outcomes Learn the uses and forms of the future perfect. Create sentences using the future perfect. Interpret the future with the future perfect.

Please note The future perfect is a tense of verbs expressing what is expected to be completed in the future. It is usually used with the phrase will have done Examples: By 10 o clock, we will have worked for 12 hours. By this time next year, she will have studied in University for 6 years.

Please note The future perfect uses will have (past participle) to express how something will be completed in the future. The future perfect also uses by the time to express the moment in the future that the completed action will take place Examples: By the time I get home, the game will have finished. I will have perfected my Spanish by the time I leave Cuba.

Please note The future perfect simple is formed using (Subject) + (Will Have) + (Past Participle) or (Subject) + (is/am/are) + (going to have) + (Past Participle) Example: - This download will have been finished by tomorrow morning. - He is going to have read through all the CV s by tonight.

Please note There is no real difference between using will have and going to have yet will have is far more common. Also, this tense is not very common in everyday English as it may not be too common in your own language. In some cases it may just be easier to use the future simple tense. Example: By next Thursday, all the games will have been played. All games will be played by next Thursday. No big difference!

Please note There is no real difference between using will have and going to have yet will have is far more common. X Past Present Future The green line expresses something that is being done and will be finished (red x) by a specific point in the future. At the end of the month, I will have generated $500 in sales.

Please note Some examples using the first use of the Future Perfect Examples: - By next Summer, I will have lost 10 pounds. - I will not have this project finished by tomorrow. No way! - By the time I get to Phoenix, it will have been past dinner time.

I will have been in America for one year by the time my visa expires. By Monday, I will have rented this car for two weeks. Please note The second future simple use is more commonly with non-continuous verbs. It is used to show that something will continue up until another action in the future. Past Present Future The green line expresses something that is being done continuously and will be finished (Red X) by a specific point in the future. X

Please note Here are some examples using the second use of the Future Perfect Examples: - I will have worked here for six months by the end of December. - By Thursday, Joe will have had my cat for a week. - She will have been living here for two years when Christmas comes.

Writing Create three sentences of your choice in the future perfect tense. EX) By the end of tonight, I will have finished this work. 1) 2) 3)

Please note Adverbs always go before the have when using the future perfect tense. Examples: - You will never have completed all those exercises by the afternoon. - She will just have arrived by the time we get to the airport. - I will only have earned a bit of money by the time I finish all this work.

Writing Complete the sentences. 1) I (earn) $700 by next week. 2) She (not finish) the assignment by tomorrow. That s too much work! 3) My brother (arrive) by the time we get home. 4) This country (elect) a new president by next November.

Writing Complete the sentences. 1) They never (know) it was me by the time they find out. 2) Sam is probably (get) dinner by the time she finishes work. 3) I (live) here for 3 years by this June. 4) She hopes she (learn) enough Spanish to live there alone.

Please note In some cases, the active and passive tenses are interchangeable and can be used equally. This of course, depends on the subject. Examples: - They will have completed the report before the due date. - The report will have been completed before the due date.

Writing Make three future perfect sentences using the passive tense. EX) The food will have been eaten by the time you get here. 1) 2) 3)

Please note A common mistake with future perfect is using a time clause at the beginning with the future perfect. In this case you would use the present perfect tense. Examples: I am going to go outside when I will have finished my homework. Uses the time phrase and then another time phrase (future perfect) I am going to go outside when I have finished my homework. or I am going to go outside when I finish my homework. Use the time phrase properly instead of using the future perfect
