There is no better way to get one-on-one exposure to people in the Bozeman area. We sang unofficially about 35 valentines with a few freebies in-between. Congratulations to the New Guys quartet of John and Jesse Sheppard, Kevin Mattson, and Lyman Janssen. And thanks also to the Doodle Dandies and Bridger Blend. Al Sprenger, Sig Dehn, Bernie Bissell, Frank Johnson, and Dan Hopper joined the quartets as subs when needed. The Singing Valentine program is a nationally supported activity of the Barbershop Harmony Society and maintains a web site for people wanting to send valentines to loved ones all over the country. One of our valentines was a request from someone in Portland, OR. It is this type of quartetting where memories are made and friendships among quartet members are founded. Speaking from experience in several choruses, Valentine Quartets are one of the first groups of four to form active performing quartets. Singing in the chorus is a treat, but singing in quartets adds frosting to the cake. Thanks also to the folks who worked so hard putting this all together: Dave Shrupp, Gerry Mollock, Mike and Cecelia Tank, and Natalie. DH The New Guys Offer up A Singing Valentine

Dwight Adams SWEET SPOT At 42 mph my antique Ford, a 1930 Model A, just seems to settle in and enjoy the ride. A friend told me that his BMW didn't really perform well below 85. I am a lousy golfer, but I'm told that finding the sweet spot on the club gives one a better shot. The Louisville Slugger baseball bat has a sweet spot. Barbershop singers are always trying for the sweet spot. It's a chord that rings and you don't want to leave it. During the 1970s Bob Johnson was some kind of Poohbah in the Society, maybe the director of music or something. When he was coaching a chorus he would at some point develop a big grin, stop the song, and say, "Isn't that nice? That's the Barbershopper's sweet spot. The tags we sing have several. If you want to say Wow! that's the sweet spot! The Old Chorale February 23, 2010 Page 4 of 6 A Note from Our President BERNIE s BITS Fellow Chord Rustlers, I want to commend you on your level of commitment to our performance rehearsals. Your presence and paying attention to our director has steadily improved, still we have more to do. With 10 rehearsals remaining we need to work hard to be off the page (no music) by the 1 st of April on all songs. We ll get there. The chorus as it is right now has better quality of voices than it has had in the 23 years of my membership. This statement was made by Wyman and I believe it and Wyman has been around longer than me. Our members are taking on responsibilities as individuals for the betterment of all. When we spread the workload, each has to do less. I am happy to have our young members get involved in the various activities and encourage them to try quartetting as this is the backbone of good choruses. The more quartets we have, the better our chorus will be. Last but not least is a special thanks to Mike and Cecilia Tank, Dave Schrupp, Jerry Mollock, Dan Hopper, and the quartets for their individual and combined efforts on the Singing Valentines. This project can get better and better. Also thank you to the Doodle Dandies for your outreach in Whitehall. Let s continue to work hard for a great show and competition. Keep a song in your heart, Bernie Doodle Dandies Hit the Road to Whitehall BACK TO THE FUTURE MUSIC STYLE An invitation from Janet Heilig, Director of Music at Whitehall, was all it took for the Doodle Dandies to put on their teaching hats for two music classes on Feb. 11 th. Age differences of 60 70 years seemed to disappear when the Doodles illustrated the style and makeup of harmony that describes the barbershop style of music. And some of the students even came up and sang along with us when they found out what real harmony is all about and how fun it is to sing together regardless of age differences. We emphasized two things first, start and keep singing all your life. Second, come to our Big Sky Youth Harmony Rendezvous for an inspiring musical experience. We handed out Rendezvous flyers and feel confident we will see some of them there. They have some good voices in Whitehall and under Janet s leadership they will flourish. We were extremely optimistic and enthusiastic about the whole experience. This came about as a result of Janet Heilig s visit to our booth at the HS Music Teacher s convention. Our thanks to Frank Smith filling in for Dennis (he still has to work for a living). Janet has since asked for 10 copies of the Barber Polecat Series. Wyman Schmidt

The Old Chorale February 23, 2010 Page 5 of 6 Who is This Chord Rustler? Periodically, "The Old Chorale" will have an article describing a member's life and experiences. See if you can figure out who it is before the end of the article. Early one summer morning when I was nine years old, I heard this loud roar that sounded like engines. It was 3:15 am. Later that day, my dad told me it was the engines from a contract Forest Service spray plane. The next morning I rode my bicycle to the airport and silently watched as the plane took off. I was hooked. For this barbershopper it was the beginning of a lifetime relationship with planes and anything associated with aircraft and flying. He was born in Dallas, Texas and moved to Bozeman, his Mom s home, in 1944 while his dad served in the Army Air Corps. His dad flew in the China-Burma theatre during the last two years of World War II. His mom was a housewife. When his dad was discharged, he went to work for Lynch s Flying Service at Gallatin Field where he was a pilot for 11 years and then bought their Bozeman operation. The company was renamed Flight Line, Incorporated and provided charters, flight instruction, spraying, dusting, and military flight training during the war. The young, future aviator went to school in Belgrade, played basketball, and was in the school band where he played clarinet. He attended MSU and studied Agriculture Production and was in the University s marching band. Flying, however, was his passion. He started piloting a plane at 15, soloed at 16, got his commercial license, and became a flight instructor at 18. He started working for his dad in 1956 and became president of the company when his dad retired in 1978. The company provided flight training, refueling, maintenance, and air ambulance services. They had 13 aircraft and 31 employees. He sold the company in 1982. Paul Newby has 28,500 hours piloting aircraft (that s 3¼ years!) and provides a spraying and dusting service. He sprays herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, fertilizer, plant growth regulators, and a biological product to enhance soil activity. Busy from May through September, Paul covers the southwest counties of Montana. He has been married to Pat for 42 years. They have three children including Jennifer, who was born with a triple heart defect and lived until she was 14. She was a blessing to all who knew her, Paul told me. She was a positive inspiration for our entire family. Their son Alex is married, lives in Siberia, and helps people with substance abuse problems. Their daughter Kathryn lives in Mongolia and teaches English to area teachers. Pat is the original director of the local Hospice and continues as a nurse for that organization. Paul has been a member of the Chord Rustlers for about 25 years, serving as the newsletter editor and Vice President of Membership. He is a founding member of the Belgrade Lions Club and sings in the Gallatin Valley Men s Choir. He has been a member of the Doodle Dandies quartet for over 20 years, always a Bass. In addition to flying and singing, he enjoys snowmobiling, model railroading, hunting, photography, and fishing. One of Paul s most memorable trips was piloting an air ambulance to Billings with a couple who had been involved in an automobile accident. The husband had significant head injuries. His wife sat in the co-pilot s seat and began to cry. She and Paul prayed together, which calmed her. Her husband survived. Thank you, Paul, for your years of service to the Chord Rustlers and to the Bozeman/Belgrade communities. Gerry Mollock

The Old Chorale February 23, 2010 Page 6 of 6 Chord Rustlers meet Tuesdays at Grace Bible Church, 3625 South 19 th, Bozeman. Rehearsals are from 7:00 9:00 p.m. Guests are always welcome. Mission Statement Bozeman Chord Rustlers The mission of the Chord Rustlers is to sing a cappella, four-part harmony, in the barbershop style, to support vocal music education of youth, and to provide audiences with wholesome entertainment for all occasions by men who enjoy musical and social camaraderie, desiring to share their love of music within the community, and who aspire to grow in musical excellence and preserve the tradition of four-part harmony singing.
