However, Hughes was born in Jolin, Missouri, birthce also Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). And, like Twain, he held a fascination for the Mississii River and rivers in general. The theme water is resent in many his writings. My Soul has Grown Dee reflects uon rivers historic and geograhical imortance the Euhrates, the Nile and the Mississii. As the rivers have endured over time, so has the human soul. The waters the blood runs dee. In contrast to the universal message the first song, Troubled Water is contemorary and ersonal.
