Honolulu, Hawaii; Hawaiian Gazette Co., Ltd.; 1917. ***See Hill, Volume II, pages 143 and 414: The Narrative of English missionary William Ellis is particularly important, as it was the first book written about the Hawaiian islands and the first serious notice of the islands since Captain Cook s discovery of them forty-eight years earlier. It may be called the first scientific book on Hawaii: although its main purpose was to report on mission progress, and Ellis was primarily interested in local manners and traditions, he was sufficiently expansive to include observations on such natural and cultural history topics as volcanoes, antiquities, and the anthropology of the islands. He includes an account of the death of Captain Cook from an eyewitness report of native Hawaiians. This edition is from the considerably enlarged second edition of 1827 ( first published 1826) and includes material also from Ellis s Journal of 1825: This combination constitutes the clearest, most accurate, and detailed account extant of the physical and social conditions existing in Hawaii in 1823. - Hill. 69 (Watson, Frederick; Editor). HISTORICAL RECORDS OF AUSTRALIA. Comprising Series I, Governors Despatches to and from England, 26 volumes, 1914-1925; Series III, Despatches and Papers relating to the Settlement of the States, 6 volumes, 1921-1923; Series IV, Legal Papers, 1 volume, 1922. [Melbourne]; Library Committee of the Commonwealth Parliament; 1914-1925 and (1971). ***All published in the original series. Volumes I and IX in Series I are the 1971 reprints (as usual); the remainder are all the original printings. THIS COLLECTION IS AN INDISPENSABLE REFERENCE FOR THE SERIOUS STUDENT OF AUSTRALIAN HISTORY. It has been fully collated in detail, and is quite complete and in good order, but for the following trifling faults to Series I & III: In Series I, Volume II has the margins to the Introduction trimmed rather close with the slight loss of the ends of lines on two pages; Volume VI has one 16-page section repeated with nothing omitted; Volume IX has 16 pages offset with slight loss of clarity, but still quite legible; Volume XIII has half-title & title-page slightly creased; Volume XIV has an original paper flaw to pp. 227/8 with loss of a few letters; in Series III, Volume II lacks pp. xvii-xxiv but these pages are supplied in good facsimile, as are copies of the few slightly defective pages to Series I mentioned above. These sets are probably rarely collated and few

sets are likely to be absolutely without fault, but as stated above this set has been checked in detail and the few defects made good. Full collations are available on request. Series III was resumed in 1997 with the publication of Volume VII, covering despatches and papers relating to Van Diemen s Land in 1828; this is now out of print. Volumes VIII ($400), IX ($200) and X ($200) have also been published by Melbourne University Press and can be obtained to order. [with] Watson, Fredk.; Editor.
