Questions for Analyzing Theme Character Does the main character change during the course of the story? Does the main character realize something he or she did not know before?. Does the title signify something about the story? Does it point to a truth the story reveals about life? Are any important statements about life or people made in the story, either by the narrator or characters in the story? 4

Paraphrase Try to put the poem in simpler language. Who is the speaker? What is their situation? 7
Connotation connotation an idea or feeling that a word evokes denotation its literal meaning Look for words that: cause a strong emotional reaction stand out seem related to the title Why did the writer use them instead of others? 8
Attitude How does the poet feel towards the subject? How does the speaker feel towards the subject? The attitude of the speaker and the poet may not be the same. 9
Shifts Shift are usually characterized by a change in mood/tone. Look for: new stanzas transition words changes in diction changes in the speaker unusual punctuation 10
Title Title...Again Are your thoughts different from when you first looked at it? Why? Does the poem use any poetic devices that add to the mean? Is there a metaphor? Does it suggest a possible theme? 11
Theme the central idea, universal truth, issue, or conflict What is the subject? Who is the speaker? What situation are they in? How do they feel about the situation? Is there more than one speaker or attitude towards the subject? Why? How does the poet's word choice and other poetic devices help the reader better understand the poem? 12
