The intractability of this issue could be a function of our general approach towards diversity. Culturally responsive pedagogy within classical music is explored as a potential solution, with El Sistema as a useful paradigm, but one that also must be contextually modified if it is to form an effective response to different cultural preferences within distinct populations. 11:30 am Innovative Teaching in Traditional Ensembles [WDCH Founder s Room] 12:30 pm Bryan Powell, Assistant Professor of Music Education and Music Technology at Montclair State University Facilitated by Vince Womack, Music Director, Foshay Learning Center; Faculty, USC Thornton School of Music [Presentation/Facilitated Q&A] This interactive session will engage participants in strategies for incorporating composition, songwriting, and improvisation into large group instrumental and orchestral settings. This session will also feature examples from a current El Sistema program that is incorporating student-chosen music and popular music instruments. Students from Bay Area Music Project s choir collaborated with instrumental band students in Port au Prince, Haiti to arrange, rehearse and record two songs in English and Haitian Creole. 4
1:30 pm Critical Intersections: [WDCH Founder s Room] 2:15 pm MYCincinnati's Youth-Led Models for Social Justice Engagement, Collaborative Practice, and Creative Citizenship Ziyad Tooles, Bass, MYCincinnati & NTASF 2016 2018 Kalla Ervin, Citizen Artist Fellow & Site Coordinator, MYCincinnati Facilitated by Eddy Kwon, Director of MYCincinnati [Presentation/Facilitated Q&A] Director Eddy Kwon will share the motivations, structures, and results of some of MYCincinnati's specialized programming for teens: the Ambassador Ensemble, which combines social justice engagement with collaborative composition and performance; the Youth Apprentice Employment Program, which hires and trains current students to take on critical leadership positions within the daily program; the Citizen Artist Fellowship, an immersive civic-creative program for graduates transitioning into postsecondary work; and the Artists-in-Residence Program, in which MYCincinnati students and professional artists co-create brand-new collaborative work. Kwon will be joined by MYCincinnati graduate (and NTASF bassist) Ziyad Tooles and MYCincinnati Citizen Artist Fellow Kalla Ervin for a panel discussion following the presentation. 2:30 pm Mariachi Education: [WDCH BP Hall] 3:30 pm Teaching with a Culturally Responsive Approach Juan Morales, Co-Owner and Director of The Mariachi Studio Mariachi Mestizo Facilitated by Jazmín Morales, Manager of Community Engagement and Career Development, The Colburn School [Presentation/Performance/Facilitated Q&A] Students in the Central Valley of California make mariachi music their own, empowering their peers to send a powerful message about immigrant communities from the nation s top stages. Also included in this session, Jazmín Morales will discuss leadership development for young classical musicians of color. With Black and Latinx musicians making up less than 5% of American orchestras, classical music can feel like an intimidating and alienating environment for young musicians of color. Leadership development strategies such as building authentic confidence, leaning into one's unique strengths, and taking ownership of one's artistic process, can help students of color step boldly into the field with fresh, unapologetic perspective. 3:30 pm Creating Synergy in the Classroom [WDCH BP Hall] 4:30 pm Soo Han, Director of Orchestral Activities at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music; Program Director, NTASF Junior String Ensemble [Workshop] One of the most effective ways to build your ensemble musically and non-musically is to give much of the ownership of the program to the students. This session will present several ways in which students can lead musically and non-musically in an orchestra program. This session will provide various ways in which student leadership teams can be structured that lead to their ownership of the program. 5
3:30 pm Building Cultures of Liberation: [WDCH Founder s Room] 4:30 pm A Conversation with Justin Laing Justin Laing, Principal Consultant of Hillombo, LLC Facilitated by Lecolion Washington, Executive Director/CEO of Community Music Center of Boston [Presentation/Facilitated Q&A] As a child, family member, teaching artist, program officer and now consultant, Justin Laing has engaged and been engaged by the orchestral music education field in a variety of ways over the last 40 years. Over time his language has changed, but at the root of the questions, suspicion, and criticism remain the same: "Can this art serve black and brown young people in liberatory ways, or does it ultimately seek to take advantage of them, employing their bodies in the narrative of the music's and ultimately Europe's classicality and superiority? Today, one of the projects Justin works on is focused on building cultures of liberation and deconstructing racism with African-descended teaching artists of various ages. A great deal of collective work is being done to figure out what these practices look like. What kinds of changes would be necessary for an orchestral music program to participate fully and name its work in this way? Young musicians spent the week in intensive study making music and new friends. In this session, NTASF students will share their experiences from their home programs and reflect on their week with NTASF. In this interactive workshop, participants will experience the writing process that students and tutors move through together at 826LA centers and have space to discuss how they might adapt these principles to their own progressive practices. 1:30 pm It Takes a Village: [Colburn Zipper Hall] 2:30 pm The Importance of the Individual and the Team Around Them Rebecca Bogers, Associate Dean and Director of the New England Conservatory Preparatory School Lecolion Washington, Executive Director/CEO of Community Music Center of Boston [Presentation] How do we leverage the collective impact of the team of caring adults to empower a young musician s individual motivation and success? Rebecca Bogers and Lecolion Washington will explore how to keep programs student-focused through collective solutions for supporting and sustaining musical excellence amongst classically trained youth musicians. Panelists will also discuss how they intend to embrace these new ideas and put them into action going forward.
