10:30 am Will the Liberatory Orchestral Music Programs Please Stand Up? [WDCH BP Hall] 11:00 am Justin Laing, Principal Consultant of Hillombo, LLC [Keynote] 11:00 am Q&A with Justin Laing and Xóchitl Morales [WDCH BP Hall] 11:15 am Facilitated by Leni Boorstin, Senior Advisor of External Affairs, LA Phil [Facilitated Q&A] 11:30 am Culturally Responsive Orchestral Pedagogy [WDCH BP Hall] 12:30 pm Chris Jenkins, Associate Dean for Academic Support at Oberlin Conservatory Facilitated by Justin Laing, Principal Consultant of Hillombo, LLC [Presentation/Facilitated Q&A] Despite decades of programming and funding intended to diversify the ranks of classical music audiences and performers, actual diversity particularly as measured within the ranks of symphony orchestra players remains low. The intractability of this issue could be a function of our general approach towards diversity. Culturally responsive pedagogy within classical music is explored as a potential solution, with El Sistema as a useful paradigm, but one that also must be contextually modified if it is to form an effective response to different cultural preferences within distinct populations. 11:30 am Innovative Teaching in Traditional Ensembles [WDCH Founder s Room] 12:30 pm Bryan Powell, Assistant Professor of Music Education and Music Technology at Montclair State University Facilitated by Vince Womack, Music Director, Foshay Learning Center; Faculty, USC Thornton School of Music [Presentation/Facilitated Q&A] This interactive session will engage participants in strategies for incorporating composition, songwriting, and improvisation into large group instrumental and orchestral settings. This session will also feature examples from a current El Sistema program that is incorporating student-chosen music and popular music instruments. Learn practical strategies for allowing students to move to the center of the music-making process, creating avenues for making musical choices that will result in more independent young musicians. 12:30 pm Lunch [On Your Own] 1:30 pm 1:30 pm Empowering Young Voices: [WDCH BP Hall] 2:15 pm Cultural Understanding Through Collaboration Lorrie Murray, Founder and Executive Director of Bay Area Music Project [Presentation] This session will discuss the use of Studio Habits of Mind as a framework for an elementary school-age student-centered project emphasizing international understanding and friendship through a virtual music collaboration. Students from Bay Area Music Project s choir collaborated with instrumental band students in Port au Prince, Haiti to arrange, rehearse and record two songs in English and Haitian Creole. 4

1:30 pm Critical Intersections: [WDCH Founder s Room] 2:15 pm MYCincinnati's Youth-Led Models for Social Justice Engagement, Collaborative Practice, and Creative Citizenship Ziyad Tooles, Bass, MYCincinnati & NTASF 2016 2018 Kalla Ervin, Citizen Artist Fellow & Site Coordinator, MYCincinnati Facilitated by Eddy Kwon, Director of MYCincinnati [Presentation/Facilitated Q&A] Director Eddy Kwon will share the motivations, structures, and results of some of MYCincinnati's specialized programming for teens: the Ambassador Ensemble, which combines social justice engagement with collaborative composition and performance; the Youth Apprentice Employment Program, which hires and trains current students to take on critical leadership positions within the daily program; the Citizen Artist Fellowship, an immersive civic-creative program for graduates transitioning into postsecondary work; and the Artists-in-Residence Program, in which MYCincinnati students and professional artists co-create brand-new collaborative work. Kwon will be joined by MYCincinnati graduate (and NTASF bassist) Ziyad Tooles and MYCincinnati Citizen Artist Fellow Kalla Ervin for a panel discussion following the presentation. 2:30 pm Mariachi Education: [WDCH BP Hall] 3:30 pm Teaching with a Culturally Responsive Approach Juan Morales, Co-Owner and Director of The Mariachi Studio Mariachi Mestizo Facilitated by Jazmín Morales, Manager of Community Engagement and Career Development, The Colburn School [Presentation/Performance/Facilitated Q&A] Students in the Central Valley of California make mariachi music their own, empowering their peers to send a powerful message about immigrant communities from the nation s top stages. Also included in this session, Jazmín Morales will discuss leadership development for young classical musicians of color. With Black and Latinx musicians making up less than 5% of American orchestras, classical music can feel like an intimidating and alienating environment for young musicians of color. Leadership development strategies such as building authentic confidence, leaning into one's unique strengths, and taking ownership of one's artistic process, can help students of color step boldly into the field with fresh, unapologetic perspective. 3:30 pm Creating Synergy in the Classroom [WDCH BP Hall] 4:30 pm Soo Han, Director of Orchestral Activities at Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music; Program Director, NTASF Junior String Ensemble [Workshop] One of the most effective ways to build your ensemble musically and non-musically is to give much of the ownership of the program to the students. This session will present several ways in which students can lead musically and non-musically in an orchestra program. This session will provide various ways in which student leadership teams can be structured that lead to their ownership of the program. 5

3:30 pm Building Cultures of Liberation: [WDCH Founder s Room] 4:30 pm A Conversation with Justin Laing Justin Laing, Principal Consultant of Hillombo, LLC Facilitated by Lecolion Washington, Executive Director/CEO of Community Music Center of Boston [Presentation/Facilitated Q&A] As a child, family member, teaching artist, program officer and now consultant, Justin Laing has engaged and been engaged by the orchestral music education field in a variety of ways over the last 40 years. Over time his language has changed, but at the root of the questions, suspicion, and criticism remain the same: "Can this art serve black and brown young people in liberatory ways, or does it ultimately seek to take advantage of them, employing their bodies in the narrative of the music's and ultimately Europe's classicality and superiority? Today, one of the projects Justin works on is focused on building cultures of liberation and deconstructing racism with African-descended teaching artists of various ages. A great deal of collective work is being done to figure out what these practices look like. What kinds of changes would be necessary for an orchestral music program to participate fully and name its work in this way? Do El Sistema orchestral music programs have aspirations for this kind of practice? 4:45 pm Wrap-Up Panel and Q&A [WDCH Founder s Room] 5:30 pm Facilitated by Elsje Kibler-Vermaas [Panel Discussion] Productive conference sessions tend to ask as many questions as they answer. Key speakers (both professionals and students) will gather to debrief on their big takeaways from the day and ask the audience to chime in on issues that were raised for them before the second full day of the conference. SATURDAY, JULY 14 Walt Disney Concert Hall & The Colburn School 8:00 am El Sistema USA Meeting [WDCH Founder s Room] 9:00 am 8:30 am Registration Opens [WDCH Lobby] 8:30 am Breakfast [WDCH BP Hall] 9:00 am Keynote: Growing Up YOLA [WDCH BP Hall] 9:20 am Liliana Morales, Senior at Orange County High School of the Arts & YOLA Violinist [Keynote] A student and a leader in YOLA from its very beginning, Liliana Morales will reflect on her decade in the program, the unique perspective of students, and her work to start her own music education program. 6

9:20 am From the Student Perspective: [WDCH BP Hall] 9:50 am Seeking a Definition for Success Facilitated by Rebecca Bogers, Associate Dean and Director of the New England Conservatory Preparatory School [Panel Discussion] This past week, 140 students from Sistema programs around the country came together to form the National Take a Stand Festival (NTASF) Orchestras. Young musicians spent the week in intensive study making music and new friends. In this session, NTASF students will share their experiences from their home programs and reflect on their week with NTASF. Students will discuss what success looks like for young people completing these programs, share knowledge from their unique perspective about points of conflict and together look for ways to further develop student-centric programming that will help the next generation reach their goals. 10:00 am Chamber Music: [WDCH Founder s Room] 10:50 am Driving Independent Musicianship and Fostering Intrinsic Motivation Jennifer Grim, Flutist and Assistant Professor at University of Nevada, Las Vegas Facilitated by Phil Bravo, Associate Director of Social Innovation, LA Phil [Presentation/Performance/Q&A] Both musically and interpersonally, the study of chamber music holds unique value to students. Flutist and educator Jennifer Grim and LA Phil Associate Director of Social Innovation Phil Bravo will discuss ways of using chamber music as a means of developing independent musicians, driving intrinsic motivation, and developing personal responsibility in students. 10:00 am Collaborative Composition From the Student Point of View [WDCH BP Hall] 10:50 am Lowrider James, OrchKids/NTASF Student Keith Fleming, OrchKids/NTASF Student Asia Palmer, OrchKids/NTASF Student Facilitated by Leni Boorstin [Panel Discussion/Performance] Hear from three NTASF students and participants in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra s OrchKids and Peabody Institute s Tuned-In programs. Lowrider James, Keith Fleming, and Asia Palmer will recount their experiences as active participants in the collaborative composition process. Their discussion will address ways in which students can create a sense of ownership and fellowship by fusing the acts of ensemble performance and group composition. 11:00 am NTASF Chamber Strings [WDCH Main Hall] 12:00 pm Soo Han, Director of Orchestral Activities at The Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music Jeff Grogan, Professor of Music and Director of Orchestral Activities at Oklahoma City University [Performance] The NTASF Junior String Ensemble is a newly launched program, bringing together 40 outstanding young musicians, ages 12-15, from Sistema-inspired programs from across 7

the country. Join NTASF faculty and students as they share both the process and program they've engaged in over ten days together, featuring the string orchestra and student chamber ensembles. 12:00 pm Lunch [On Your Own] 1:30 pm 1:30 pm Broad Strokes First: 826LA and Student Voice [Colburn Mayman Hall] 2:30 pm Miranda Tsang, Programs Manager of 826LA [Workshop] During this session, Miranda Tsang will guide participants through an exploration of the pedagogy that 826LA uses to encourage student voice in writing, while still pushing students forward to grow as writers and storytellers. In this interactive workshop, participants will experience the writing process that students and tutors move through together at 826LA centers and have space to discuss how they might adapt these principles to their own progressive practices. 1:30 pm It Takes a Village: [Colburn Zipper Hall] 2:30 pm The Importance of the Individual and the Team Around Them Rebecca Bogers, Associate Dean and Director of the New England Conservatory Preparatory School Lecolion Washington, Executive Director/CEO of Community Music Center of Boston [Presentation] How do we leverage the collective impact of the team of caring adults to empower a young musician s individual motivation and success? Rebecca Bogers and Lecolion Washington will explore how to keep programs student-focused through collective solutions for supporting and sustaining musical excellence amongst classically trained youth musicians. The pathways to success and the definition of success are constantly evolving, but years of experience have taught us there are key elements needed for a young musician to thrive in their musical ecosystem. 2:45 pm Roundtable Discussions [Colburn Zipper Hall] 3:45 pm Facilitated by Dalouge Smith, President and CEO of San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory Sometimes, the most memorable conversations at conferences take place in the hallways. Since the strength of the Sistema field lies within our colleagues, this is our chance to come together to explore our ideas, stimulated by all that has been discussed during our shared time. Bring your top priorities to the table. 4:00 pm Headlines and Next Steps [Colburn Zipper Hall] 5:00 pm Facilitated by Andrew Missingham, Co-Founder of B+A [Interactive Presentation/Discussion] Over the course of three days, teaching artists and administrators have gained a deeper understanding of what impact means to 140 young people, what role it plays in the young people's lives, and how they can empower young people to become future 8

leaders. They will work in collaboration with young people to find out how they can best provide a positive impact in and outside of the classroom. Panelists will also discuss how they intend to embrace these new ideas and put them into action going forward. Expect lots of movement. 5:00 pm Dinner [On Your Own] 6:00 pm 6:00 pm National Take a Stand Festival Concert [WDCH Main Hall] 7:00 pm [Performance] 140 young musicians from 36 El Sistema inspired programs across the U.S. will perform a concert led by Gustavo Dudamel and Michael Morgan featuring Bernstein s Candide Overture, Shostakovich s Festive Overture, Abreu s Tico Tico arranged by Colnot, and Falla s Three Cornered Hat Suite No. 2. 7:00 pm Closing Reception [WDCH Garden] 8:30 pm Join fellow symposium attendees and National Take a Stand Festival students and faculty in a special reception that provides the opportunity to connect, celebrate, and reflect. Light appetizers and beverages will be provided. 9
