English Version NEWSLETTER #01-2018 Leipzig, 05.07.2018 Dear Colleagues and Friends, Dear Sir or Madam, Today we would like to provide you with the first information about this year s festival. The 28th edition of euro-scene Leipzig will take place from 06. - 11. November. This year, 12 guest performances from 7 countries will be shown in about 25 presentations at 8 venues; 5 of them are German premières. The spectrum ranges from dance and spoken theatre to performances and a children s play. The festival once again enjoys the patronage of Leipzig s Mayor, Burkhard Jung. The festival programme is now available at www.euro-scene.de/ programme. Upon request, the printed festival programme can be sent to you at the end of September. INHALT 1. euro-scene Leipzig 2018 2. Main programme 3. Fringe programme 4. German Dance Platform 5. Imprint 6. Financing 2018 Ticket sales begin on 29.09.2018 I wish you a wonderful summer and send my warmest regards. Ann-Elisabeth Wolff Festival Director 1. euro-scene Leipzig 2018 The motto of this year s euro-scene Leipzig is»bühnen Klang Welten«(»Stage Sound Worlds«). This time, the focus of the festival for contemporary European theatre is devoted to music in theatre and dance. Here, numerous forms of dealing with music in scenic stage formats play a role, for example, in a relationship to live music, sound, noise, text and silence. Festival motif 2018 www.euro-scene.de The scenic concert»requiem pour L.«(»Requiem for L.«) by the famous Belgian choreographer Alain Platel will open the festival. It combines Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart s Requiem with African music and addresses the subject of death in different cultures.

1. euro-scene Leipzig 2018 (continued) Ludwig van Beethoven s Symphony No. 9, one of the most famous classical music pieces, will also be heard. With his company Via Negativa from Ljubljana, Bojan Jablanovec thereby poses questions of power and the instrumentalization of music in his performance»deveta«(»the ninth«). The famous puppet builder, puppeteer, director and performer Nikolaus Habjan from Vienna is once again a guest in Leipzig: The Schauspiel Graz will have a guest performance with the piece»böhm«that was directed by Nikolaus Habjan. He performs the solo (together with numerous puppets) about Karl Böhm, one of the most important 20th century conductors. In addition, the humorous artistic whistling concert»ich pfeife auf die Oper«(double meaning in German:»I whistle an opera«&»to hell with the opera«) with arias from the history of opera and operettas is also on the programme. Nikolaus Habjan has already been passionately celebrated with this piece in numerous theatres and concert halls in Austria and Germany. Dance is represented by Nono Battesti and his Compagnie Dessources from Brussels (captivating jazz music) as well as Gianfranco Celistino & Annalisa Derossi from Luxembourg (both as dancers and pianists). Ferenc Fehér from Budapest will show his dance duet»állomás«(»the station«) with his own composition. Spoken theatre comes from London: The Compagnie Erratica will present the piece»remnants«by Patrick Eakin Young with a-cappella-singing. And»Die Schachnovelle«(»The royal game«), based on the famous novella by Stefan Zweig, will be shown in a scenic version by Geirun Tino with the Pygmalion Theater Wien. Two guest performances from France round off the festival programme: The magical children s piece»une histoire de la musique«(»a history of music«) by the Compagnie zorozora from Grenoble leads through the centuries with three musicians/performers. And at the final night the choreographer Pierre Rigal from Toulouse will show his dance piece»scandale«(»trip hazards«) with up-tempo hip-hop-elements.

3. Fringe programme Guest performances will once again be supplemented by films and public discussions this year. Thus a recording of the opera»oberon, König der Elfen«(»Oberon, or the Elf King s Oath«) by Carl Maria von Weber, which Nikolaus Habjan staged at the Bayerische Staatsoper München with excellent singers in 2017, will be shown made possible with the support from ARTE. In addition, the film»der Tod und das Mädchen«(»Death and the maiden«) by Roman Polanski will be screened, in which the eponymous string quartet by Franz Schubert plays an important role. Numerous public discussions will offer an opportunity to receive more background information about the pieces; they are planned with Nikolaus Habjan, Ferenc Fehér as well as Gianfranco Celestino & Annalisa Derossi. This year s workshop will be led by Gianfranco Celestino & Annalisa Derossi; their dance concert»duo con piano Tanzstück für zwei Pianisten«(»Duo con piano dance piece for two pianists«) will be shown in the festival programme. The workshop is intended for amateurs and semi-professional dancers. Gianfranco Celestino & Annalisa Derossi, Luxembourg»Duo con piano Tanzstück für zwei Pianisten«Applications workshop: info@euro-scene.de 4. German Dance Platform The German Dance Platform, the most important forum for contemporary dance in Germany, took place from 14. 18. March 2018 for the 14th time. It was organized by the PACT Zollverein in Essen and Gelsenkirchen. This presentation of innovative dance occurs biannually in a respectively different city. This time, it showed 13 of the most remarkable productions from the last 2 years at 94 % of total seating capacity. Network of euro-scene Leipzig www.tanzplattform.de The next German Dance Platform will take place in Munich in the spring of 2020, organized by JOINT ADVENTURES. Walter Heun will be the project director. The euro-scene Leipzig is one of currently 11 co-producers and was the organizer of the German Dance Platform 2002 in Leipzig as the first city in the new German federal states.
