FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE SIMILES A figure of speech in which things that are different are compared by the use of the words like or as. She sat as quiet as a mouse. METAPHORS A figure of speech in which is similar to a simile, but does NOT use the words like or as to compare. The clouds were a heavy blanket on our day. PERSONIFICATION Writing which gives non human objects human qualities. The clock bugged her to get up and out of bed. IDIOMS An expression that does not mean what it literally says, like "You re driving me up a wall". ALLITERATION The repetition of a sound at the beginning of two or more neighboring words. Fiction Adventure: a story that almost always take place outside. There is lots of action and often an enemy. The enemy can be nature. Kids adventure books often involve a journey or quest. Realistic Fiction: has characters and events that are like people and events in real life Mystery: a story that focuses on questions such as these: Who did it?, Where is it?, or What happened? The action centers on finding the answer to the question. Historical Fiction: a story that is set in the past and portrays people, places, and events that did happen or could have happened Humor/Comedy: A book of jokes Science Fiction: a story that tells about science and technology of the future. Stories often include robots. Fantasy: an imaginative story that may have unrealistic characters and events Folktale: stories that were first told orally. They reflect the customs and beliefs of a culture Legend: A story from the past that tells the feats of one main hero or heroine. The person was real, but not all of the facts of the story are real. Myth: a story involving the gods of a culture which sometimes explain how things came to be in nature. Fable: a short story (usually with animal characters) which has a moral or lesson.

Tall Tale: a humorous story about impossible or exaggerated happenings Play: a story that can be performed for an audience. It uses acts and scenes, is written completely in dialogue, and often has multiple settings. Poetry: Uses word pictures. Plays with sound of words and rhythms of language Often rhymes or has a beat and is meant to be read aloud. Informational Narrative: a story that presents information and facts (Mixture of Fiction and Nonfiction) Western: a story set in the old west. It often has characters like cowboys, Indians, sheriffs, outlaws, etc. Horror: Scary and dark; often has characters such as witches, vampires, ghosts...

Literary Genre The genre of a book is the style of writing the author used in the book. Each genre is different. For each genre, there are parts of the story that make the book fit in a particular genre. What genre do you think this book belongs to? Why?
