(See collection control file for any addition al notices) I Scope and Content note: The Haasis Family Papers consist of genealogical data, correspondence, literary manuscripts, photographs, newspaper columns and clippings, financial and legal records, artistic works, organizational records and memorabilia. The collection itself suggests a natural division into three record groups. A) Papers Relating to the Haasis family of Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Contains genealogical records, correspondence, photographs, financial records, diaries, greenhouse records (general), records relating to the Dunbar Ferdinand Haasis Gold Mine Claim in America and records relating to the estate of Albert L. Haasis. B) Papers Relating to Eleanor W. Haasis. Contains correspondence, copies of Eleanor W. Haasis newspaper columns which appeared in the Aiken Standard and Review, appointment calendars, gardening papers and papers relating to Eleanor W. Haasis involvement with the American Rose Society, the Aiken Naturalists Club, the Wilderness Society, Smoky Mountains Hiking Club and the Connecticut College Alumni Association. The papers also include a copy of Eleanor W. Haasis book, Year-around Gardening Southern Style. 2

Scope and Content note: (cont.) I HAASIS FAMILY PAPERS (cont.) C) Papers relating to C.W. Haasis. Contains correspondence, financial records, manuscripts, artistic works, and copies of C.W. Haasis newspaper columns from the Aiken Standard and Review, and papers relating to his involvement in the following organizations: Edisto Beach Yacht Club, the Savannah River Calley Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Rutgers Alumni Association. Also includes engineering papers, literary Manuscripts, financial records and copies of the C.W. Haasis Book of Weights. Transfer of Items: Copies of The Life of North American Insects by B. Jaegar and Diametrical Changed in Tree Trunks By Ferdinand W. Haasis were transferred to Acquisitions to be processed for inclusion in the Archives Special book Collections (See Transfer of Items in Collection Control File). 3

HAASIS 1892, August 4 Born 1913 BS, Rutgers University 1919 Received Civil Engineering certificate from Rutgers. 1923 Founded Haasis-King Company- railroad bridge contractors in Ohio. 1947 Appraiser- War Assets Administration. 1949 Built Dolphin Head cottage at Edisto Beach, S.C. 1957 Retired 1958 Began writing weekly column- Gardens in Aiken 1972, March 21 Died 5

III DESCRIPTION OF CORRESPONDENCE Date(s) nd Description Family correspondence relating to holidays, accomplishments of family members, deaths and family life. 1833-1845 Correspondence in this group is related to the Romance of Caroline Sansbury and Benoit Jaeger. Other correspondence includes letters exchanged by members of the Wead family. Correspondents include Edward Wead, Lucy Wead Baldwin, Mary Wead and Charles Wead. 1845-1900 Correspondence between Professor Benoit Jaeger and T.C. McElrath refers to the publishing of Jaeger s book Illustrated History of American Insects. McElrath was a partner with McElrath and Barker. Late 1800 s correspondence includes a series of letters between Fanny Haasis (daughter of Benoit Jaeger) and Edwin Stone concerning the life work of Fanny Haasis father. 1900-1913 Letters of this period are almost entirely comprised of those between Dunbar Ferdinand Haasis and C.W. Haasis. Dunbar Ferdinand s letters were written to his son and contain a father s advice concerning college and career. 1913-1919 C.W. Haasis is the primary correspondent in this group. Letters are relating to his attempts to gain employment following his graduation form college. Many letters originate in the offices of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. An enclosure to one letter written to Rutgers University is the thesis written by C.W. Haasis as fulfillment of his requirements for a professional degree in civil engineering. 1920-1929 Travel correspondence from Europe by various family members. Also included are letters from Ferdinand W. Haasis Describing the Western United States during the 1920 s. 1930-1950 Correspondence directed to Eleanor W. Haasis and C.W. Haasis in Knoxville, Tennessee. Letters from Dave Todd to C.W. Haasis originate in India and China during WWII. Letters describe in detail, the poverty of India. Correspondence also includes those of the War Asset Administration where C.W. Haasis was employed. Also included is a letter signed by Robert P. Patterson, Under Secretary of War during WWII. 1950-1959 Correspondence relates to C.W. Haasis retirement and his purchasing of Dolphin Head-his beach house at Edisto Beach S.C. 1960-1977 Correspondence is mainly general in nature from friends and gardening enthusiasts. 6

In chronological order. 9-11 36-42 NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS 1897-1978, nd Many clippings taken from the Aiken Standard and Review highlight the accomplishments of Eleanor Weas Haasis. Newspaper clippings from 1897 and 11898 copies of the New York Herald feature color printing. Other clippings relate to the activities of deaths of other Haasis family members. HAASIS 1946-1950 Includes property appraisals and inventories of the estate, correspondence, auction inventories for the Albert Haasis art collection, and financial records from settlement of the estate. In chronological order. 13 50 MEMORABILIA FILE 1800s-1900s European memorabilia, Benedict Jaeger s (ancestor of the Haasis family of Aiken) citizenship document, theatre programs and handbills from late 1800 s productions in New York. Also included is a citation signed by King Karl of Wurttemberg honoring Dr. Karl George Friendrich Haasis, and other papers. Box(es) Folder(s) Series Year(s) 14 54 JULIUS FRIEDRICH HAASIS PHYSICS NOTEBOOK ca. 1840s This series consists of a particularly fascinating physics notebook (ca1840s) created and kept by Julius Friedrich Haasis (1827-1888) most likely while in school in Germany. The notebook is a small handwritten and hand-illustrated 40 page, hand-sewn codex, 6.25 x 7.75, which Haasis titled Physik Heft or Physics Notebook. Written almost entirely in German, with occasional jottings in French, English, Italian, Latin, and Greek, he methodically records observations and formulae dealing with the laws of the leverage of bodies, a branch of study made famous by Archimedes in the 3d century BCE: Give me a place to stand and I will move the world. Included in the note book are some incredibly intriguing and intricate drawings that reflect the political turmoil in the German states and Europe in the 1840s. For a more in depth synopsis of the notebook consult Fred Powell s article titled, Julius Friedrich Haasis Physik Heft Das Gesetz des Hebels (The Laws of Leverage) which is available at the Archives. 14 54-55 VARIOUS PAPERS 1921-1971, nd This series consists of various records related to or produced by the Haasis Family including original unpublished short stories, articles, and poems written by family members, published articles, original drawings and architectural sketches, notes, correspondence, and vacation materials including brochures and a book containing West Texas wild flower specimens pressed into a book. B) PAPERS RELATING TO ELEANOR W. HAASIS 15 56-57 NEWSPAPER COLUMN FILE 1972-1977, nd Newspaper clippings taken from the Aiken Standard and Review were written weekly by Eleanor W. Haasis. Many gardening tips offered to readers through the column later found their way into Eleanor W. Haasis s book Year-Around Gardening Southern Style.
