Pacific Symphony League, 3631 S. Harbor Blvd, Suite 100. Santa Ana, CA 92704 September 2009 Betty Everett, editor; send submissions to bettyeverett@usa.net, 949 462 0912 The purpose of the Pacific Symphony League when it was established in 1990: PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Raise funds to support the Pacific Symphony Educate the young people of Orange County about music Promote interest in the community for Pacific Symphony and its projects As President of the Pacific Symphony League, I would like to welcome all the new and returning members. I know we all share the excitement of this season as we celebrate Maestro Carl St.Clair s 20 th year with Pacific Symphony. Programs and guest artists with special meaning for Carl and audiences have been selected for the 2009 2010 concert season. Expect return visits from Midori, Joshua Bell, and André Watts. Favorite pop stars Patti LuPone and Chris Botti will be featured. If you have not purchased your season tickets yet, now is the time to do it. The League and Symphony Supper Club are also planning exciting programs for this anniversary year beginning with the League s first membership luncheon on September 28. Pacific Symphony s Assistant Concertmaster, Jeanne Skrocki, will play violin in duet with her daughter, Laura Evans. It will be a delightful afternoon and a very good time to bring a friend. Please mark your calendars for all the meetings and events listed in this newsletter. Our vision for the League is to be a model volunteer program that is defined by four core goals: 1 Offer meaningful support the Pacific Symphony 2. Provide opportunity to expand awareness and appreciation of music 3. Enable growth in organization and leadership skills 4. Encourage interaction with others who have a strong interest in music I look forward to working with all of you.

Page 3 Symphony President, John Forsyte, and Assistant Concertmaster, Jeanne Skrocki, headline September Luncheon at The Center Club November Luncheon Meeting featuring Maxim Eshkenazy, Assistant Conductor of Pacific Symphony and Conductor of Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra John Forsyte Jeanne Skrocki Symphony President, John Forsyte, will introduce the coming 2009-10 season at the first luncheon on September 28 at The Center Club. Pacific Symphony Assistant Concertmaster Jeanne Skrocki and her daughter, Laura Evans, are the featured performers. Laura is the latest in a family of extremely talented violinists. Jeanne s mother, Bonnie Bell, was a prominent violinist in the Los Angeles area and taught both her daughter and granddaughter. Jeanne s talent, like her daughter s, was obvious at an early age. As a teenager, she was a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. At age 17, she received a full scholarship to study with Jascha Heifetz at USC in a master class. However, this is not a one-sided woman: she took time out from full-time music to study Aeronautical Engineering at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo where she earned her Bachelor s Degree. Not only has Jeanne played for numerous film soundtracks with eminent artists, she also plays with several chamber music groups. What s more: she is a dedicated teacher of violin at the University of Redlands. Laura Evans is a precocious fourteen year old who plays the violin and travels the world. She s even better than I was at that age, mother Jeanne points out. This mother-daughter duo will demonstrate the beauty of two violins working together. November 16, 2009, The Center Club 11:30 a.m. A Bulgarian native, Eshkenazy received his early musical training at the Sofia Conservatory before moving to the United States to pursue a double Masters of Music degree in Conducting and Violin Performance at the University of Southern California. He regularly guest conducts Bulgaria s major orchestras, including the Sofia Philharmonic, Classic FM Orchestra, Pleven Opera- Philharmonic Association, and Bourgas Opera- Philharmonic Association. Committed to the promotion of new music, Eshkenazy is frequently involved in performing the music of contemporary composers. His work with the Pacific Symphony is primarily with young musicians, as the conductor of the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra. He has made two promises to the Pacific Symphony League: to bring his violin and some young musicians from the Youth Orchestra for us to meet. Reservations for all luncheon meetings can be made by calling Jennifer Greenwalt at 714-876-2338.

Elizabeth Stahr, Membership Chair Family Musical Mornings Family Musical Mornings start on October 17, 2009. Five wonderful concerts are scheduled for the 2009-10 season. We also have great opportunities for Symphony League members to help staff the Musical Carnival stations before and after each concert. You will receive more information in October from Coordinator Suzanne Chonette. Notes from the Orchestra A column where Symphony musicians share their thoughts with us. Cynthia Ellis, piccolo Playing new music is always so exciting...this week; it's been the premiere of I Would Plant a Tree by James Newton Howard. It is so cool to have the composer at rehearsals: generating new 'tweaks' to the music...how many times I've longed to ask Beethoven what he meant by a certain passage...it is marvelous to have the composer explain his inspiration and share his compositional process in rehearsal! The Pacific Symphony actually seems to foster more new music than I ever expected in an orchestral job, and this is an exciting creative process for the musicians to participate in...
