CCH Music for People is an organization founded by cellist David Darling and flautist Bonnie Insull in 1986. Two practitioners of Music for People will lead a participatory workshop on improvisation to help unleash peoples creative energy. We will start off with demonstrations of techniques such as One Quality Sound, Play What You Sing, Sing What You Play and The Great X. Then we will invite some audience members to join us for group improvisation exercises. Alison Weiner, a performing jazz musician and teacher, will then share how she applies these techniques in teaching, and Yuri Yamamoto will share her evolution as a classically trained musician stepping into the world of improvisation. We will close the workshop with a mini-concert to showcase our unique styles of improvisation. Participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments. Demonstration will include how to use the ipad, an app called Forscore, and a Bluetooth foot pedal that eliminates the need for manually turning pages for the collaborative pianist and facilitates meticulous organization and storage of thousands of pages of scores.
