I. Introduction: K-pop refers to Korean pop music, or the type of pop music originating in Korea, including dance, modern rhythm and blues, popular electric, hip-hop Music. Korean pop music sprang up in the 1990 s, the 2000 s began with Hallyu in Asia and the world, and with Japanese pop, Chinese pop music and listed in Asia has a pointer to the pop music category. I.1. Motivation: There are more and more people talking about K-pop around our lives. At first, we didn t know Korean music very much, so we want to do this research to figure out why the K-pop become so popular among people in the world. I.2. Purpose: 1. To find out the background and development of K-pop. 2. To figure out the reasons why it is popular and how it influences people. 3. To compare the differences between K-pop and American popular music. I.3. Features: K-pop is a type of music, rather than a mode of performance. It s more appropriate to explain it in this way. Singing and dancing at the same time are also the vital elements of K-pop. The form of K-pop is basically dance music. No matter they are trance, techno, rock, and even the Korean traditional songs or other forms, the melody of the chorus must be simple and repeatable. Lyrics best in English to sing. Dance is very important. The memory points must be obvious. Most will also take a name for the dance, such as the clap dance of Sorry Sorry and the dog leg dance of Gee. The position is also the focus, and the arrangement of the positions directly affects the momentum. The purpose is to let young people love, to sing and dance together, and the theme of the lyrics is almost centered on the love that teenagers care most about. In addition, Korean brokerage companies have a system of trainees. The potential talent is often selected from thousands of young people enrolled through public selection of students, and senior staffs that specialize in discovering new people are strictly examined for their qualifications. They began as trainee into the brokerage company Training. Every year, it costs about NT$60 million to discover new people.the practice time is more than a few years, and it is not always possible to debut. During the training, in addition to normal school, the trainees need to go to their company to learn singing skills, professional dance training and a series of language training. Usually, the basic training of vocal music is more than 8 hours per day. This kind of military-like training method allows these idol stars to stand on the stage and mechanize to complete a performance according to the instructions. This is their performance with very few mistakes. This is the reason why their action is neatly drawn. Entertainment companies are also actively using social media such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter to get K-pop delivered to the world simultaneously. Quickly disseminate music or celebrity artists through these channels, so that other fans can quickly understand the K-pop star and reduce the cost and time of entering foreign markets. Stars also use social media to communicate directly with fans around the world, allowing fans to learn about the latest star events. In 2015, major entertainment companies collaborated with mobile internet service company Naver to launch Vapp, 1

which allows artists to broadcast live through this community, enabling fans around the world to live close to the stars. II. Development: K-pop began in the 1990s. In the 2000s, it began to popularize in Asia and the world with the Korean Wave. It was also listed as an index of popular music in Asia along with Japanese pop music and Chinese pop music. South Korea has a low population and the local market is limited, so they have been actively expanding their foreign markets. The largest market today is Japan and other Asian countries, followed by the European. Debuted in 1992, "Seo Taiji and Boys." is the turning point of the whole Korean pop music. They combine Rap Talk, Rock Music and Techno dance music. This kind of music also makes K-Pop popular in the world today. The album, which made K-pop a success, mainly included Lee's H O, launched in 199 hen there was the Keep ix that ang Hyun uk launched in 199 J.Y.Park launched in 1999, "G.O.D." And so on, so that the Korean pop music began to formally go to today's popular world-wide K-pop mode. Most Korean singing groups successfully entered China in the mid-1990s. On the other hand, formal Hip Hop and R&B music were introduced into Korean pop music, and a large number of combinations achieved unprecedented success. In the mid-to-late 1990s, K-Pop spread with the Korean Wave, and the Korean idol group, which began to appear in large numbers in 2008, began to spread the K-Pop trend from the Asian region to Europe and the United States. In 2000, films such as "My Sassy Girlfriend" were sought after, which gave birth to the creative industry. The film and television culture has set off a new round of enthusiasm in China, Japan and Taiwan. K-Pop is also very popular. Among them, the group Super Junior and Girls' Generation are the most popular, and then PSY is also suddenly emerging. The Korean Wave is out of control. Stepping into the 21st century, many K-Pop combinations such as Super Junior, Girls' Generation, PSY, SHINee, INFINITE, EXO, BIGBANG, A Pink, and so on, began to enter the Japanese market, interviews and performances in Japan, and even performing variety shows and starring TV Drama. In 2001, Nicholas Kim became the first K-Pop singer to enter the US Billboard Top 100 single list with the single "Hello Goodbye Hello". In 2012, the K-Pop boom was pushed to new heights through the popular Gangnam Style of YouTube. The song is highly regarded in the mainstream music scene in Europe and America, in the European and American rankings ranked first, and the young and old to cause imitation craze. At the same time, Korea's cultural and entertainment industry revenue and expenditure reached a surplus for the first time in history. Through the visual imaging platform, the content of Korean pop music production has been changed, and the visually dominant pop music has been born. The visual image of the star combination is not only to match the song, but also to create the K-Pop style and promote popular music into Korean pop culture. It has triggered an international imitative trend, and uses body dance as a song performance, combining dance and music to become the K-pop trademark. The choreography of the group and individual dances reflects the youthful and progressive image of the young Koreans, and the MV in addition to the visual images, is also the self-meaning message of Korean pop music, showing and diffusing the visual K-pop influence. 2

II.1 Is k-pop the Same as American Popular Music? II.1.1 The Selection Process In American pop, labels generally choose stars based on their natural talent. Singers are expected to already have the training and skill level required to be professional performers at the time of their audition or contract signing. Any training they received prior to signing was on their own time, with their own money. In K-pop,can be chosen for a number of reasons to appeal to global audiences, K-Pop groups often include members from China Thailand and North America.Would-be idols are not required to have professional-level skills at the beginning because each one undergoes years of rigorous training prior to debut. II.1.2 Trainee System In American pop, there is no standard trainee system. Boy and girls were formed through open auditions and debuted within 1-2 years. Once a group is formed, there is rarely a question of whether or not the group will debut.in the K-pop, the training period is much longer and more uncertain. Idols sign on with a company without knowing which group they will eventually become a part of, if they become part of a group at all It s not unheard of for K-Pop idols to train for as long as seven years and still not debut. II.1.3 Skill Sets In American pop, incredible vocal abilities are an absolute must. Additional skills, like dancing and acting, not very demanding. In K-pop,due to the trainee system, some idols started out with hardly any singing abilities.therefore they will have a special teacher to teach them the ability to sing, help them improve their singing ability and make them the most popular singing group.k-pop idols may not have the same expectations placed on their singing abilities as American artists do, but they are required to have a wider range of talents. This includes performance hosting TV and radio shows. II.1.4 Songwriting For American pop artists, especially individual singers, there is a strong focus on originality and personal identity. Most singers write or compose their own songs or, if they don t, they have a significant say in the songwriting process. The songs are often based on life experiences and are deeply personal.on the other hand, many K-Pop idols rely on producers to create their music for them ince an idol s trainee days revolve around singing and dancing, not musical composition, they often don t learn or they have no chance to compose until later in their careers.but in recent years, many Korean groups also try to start writing their own songs, take your own experience, from the beginning, it was not optimistic and became popular in the lyrics. II.1.5 Album Languages American pop artists release albums entirely in English, and sometimes in Spanish. They don t need to create multiple albums in multiple languages for specific countries in order to promote globally.however K-pop artists, will often record the same Korean album again in Chinese and Japanese, or release completely different albums in each language. This is done to appeal to a broader audience within the global Asian pop scene.it can also publication different versions of the album, increase the exposure of the group, let people know more about this group around the world. 3

II.2 Comparison: South Korean singer BTS uses mv to represent the miss of the the sunken ferry Sewol. After the fans studied the lyrics, they found that the song seems to be chasing the shipwreck sweol, they want to use the warm singing to heal the pain of everyone. The lyrics sang i miss you i still miss you even if i look at your photos at the beginning, it seems to the family members of the victims have lost their children s mood. After that they also sang the regret of that time, i hate us it s difficult to meet us now, describe the fact that the deceased and the living cannot see each other. Sewol was happened at April 16, 2014, search ends in November, however, there are still 9 people missing. BTS also tells the survivors and families that they are not alone on this road, they are not alone because they have their own companionship, have bts accompany his sad tragedy is not only a sensation in Korea, but also attracted the attention of many countries. American singer Shawn Mendes make this song is different from his music, a litter more rock and whispering, music is not like a happy teenage style, incorporate more of your own feelings and growth process in music, we can feel his passion for music in this song. In My Blood is writing the normal state of modern life, describe people who are struggling, trapped in deep self-consciousness. In the mv, Shawn Mendes is afraid of beig alone, so let myself calm by sliding my phone, but always let myself fall into endless anxiety again, and let myself fall into the tug of war that gives up and does not give up Isn t that the current person? Just pick up your phone and watch it as soon as you have free time, talk to friends, let yourself think you are not alone, gradually doing this will only make you more empty, because i only live in the online world, so it will make people feel incompetent in the real world He want to give up in the lyrics but i won t give up because giving up is never what he should do. Shawn Mendes thinks we should not give up what we want to do if we don t have difficulties, we must recognize these problems and work hard to solve them II.3 Questionnaire Methods: When it comes to doing this research questions, we spent one week distributing questionnaires to the first grade and third grade students of Applied Foreign Language Department.
