Turabian s A Manual fr Writers f Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertatins, MLA Handbk fr Writers f Research Papers (New Yrk: The Mdern Language Assciatin f America) r APA, Publicatin Manual f the American Psychlgical Assciatin. 2. D nt use dissertatins in the library style as style guides. 3. Befre writing even ne wrd f yur rugh draft, read the style manual thrughly and fllw it scrupulusly as yu write yur rugh draft. Nte especially the chapters n Preparing the List f Wrks Cited and Dcumenting Surces Befre writing ne wrd f yur rugh draft, set up yur dcument with the crrect margins, tab stps (fr indentatins f paragraphs, blck qutatins, and ftntes), and paginatin. Frm the beginning use the prper headings, subheadings, ftntes, and bibligraphy entries. Then yu will have a very clear picture f where yu are as yu g alng, and yu will save an enrmus amunt f cleanup time at the end because making these changes afterward t the crrect settings is very time cnsuming. The fllwing regulatins shuld be bserved. In case f any cnflict these supersede all three style guides. Structure f the Dissertatin 1. The dissertatin shall always cntain the fllwing items: title page, table f cntents, the text, apprpriate ftntes, and a bibligraphy, either simple r anntated. 2. Optinal items include: a dedicatin page, a preface, and apprpriate tables, charts, and figures. Preparing the Submissin Cpies f the Dissertatin 1. Type sizes and faces: Acceptable: New Times Rman r the equivalent 12 pint fnt fr main text; n less than 10 pint fr ftntes Unacceptable: Type faces smaller than 12 pints Fnts that are cmpressed and that squeeze in as many letters as pssible n a line. 2. Cntact the Administrative Assistant in the CSGS early n in yur writing prcess. She will refer yu t smene wh can check the frmat f yur manuscript. 3. Sme frmatting guidelines: Page and text frmat: Margins 1
Left: ne and a half inches Right: ne inch Tp: ne inch Bttm: an inch t an inch and a quarter belw the last ftnte line. Paginatin: is inside the abve margins. Fr the text: In the upper right crner, except fr the first page f a chapter (bttm center). Frnt matter (everything befre the first page f yur text): Page numbers fr this sectin are small Rman numerals and are placed at the bttm center f the page. Ftntes must fllw the prper frmats and be placed at the bttm f the page, nt at the end f the chapter r f the dissertatin. In ther frmat matters eg, table f cntents, bibligraphy, chapter headings, subheadings fllw the guidelines in the style handbk yu are using. Line Spacing: All text: either duble-space r space-and-ahalf. Blck qutatins, ftntes, and bibligraphy items: single space. Typing Cnventins: Spacing after perids: After initials use ne space: T. D., nt T.D. In abbreviatins, n spaces are used: U.S.A. Ph.D. Perids and cmmas always g inside the qutatin marks in American style, n exceptins end f qutatin. - Is crrect Nt, end f qutatin. - Is incrrect Dashes are made with tw hyphens and n spaces: Text text (the 2 dashes becme a lnger, slid line) Nt, text text After the cln In text: tw spaces In bibligraphies and ftntes use ne space: Bk title: subtitle City: publisher Qutatins: Shrter than 50 wrds: Integrate with yur sentence and set ff by duble qutatin marks ( ). If yu are using citatins in the text instead f using ftntes, put the citatin inside the perid f the sentence but after the end f the qutatin: Ø last wrd f the qutatin (Wrenn 165). Ø Nt, last wrd f the qutatin. (Wrenn 165) Lnger than 50 wrds: Put in blck frm i.e., indented n the left nly and usually single spaced (MLA duble spaced). 2
The blck frm is the equivalent f s d nt use unless the riginal qutatin has them. Ellipsis: This is ne f the mst frequent prblems. The purpse f the ellipsis is t shw than an missin has been make in the qutatin. The frm f the ellipsis indicates the type f missin. The number and spacing f the perids has meaning. When the missin is bvius, an ellipsis is nt necessary. Nte the fllwing examples and what they mean. text text Smething is left ut f the middle f the sentence. text Text [Turabian] text Text [MLA] The end f a sentence is left ut and a new sentence starts. Turabian uses ne space after the final perid. MLA uses tw spaces after the final perid n the lgic that tw spaces fllw the end f a sentence. text Text [Turabian] text Text [MLA] One sentence ends, an missin is made, and a new sentence begins. text [T]ext One sentence ends, n missin is made, and a new sentence begins, but nt at the beginning. The first wrd f a sentence must be capitalized, but since that wrd is nt capitalized in the riginal, the capital is put in [ ]. 4. Submitting cpies f the dissertatin fr the ral defense: If yur reader has apprved, an electrnic file f yur dissertatin defense cpies may be submitted t yur readers. Hwever, if yur reader/s prefer a hard cpy then yu may print dubled sided cpies and put in three ringbinder fr easy handling. Include an abstract f nt mre than 350 wrds fr each reader s review. Fllw frmat heading sample (p. 7). At the same time yu have submitted yur dissertatin t yur readers, submit a title page, vita and abstract t the Administrative Assistant t the CSGS Dean s ffice. 5. Submitting the final cpy after the ral defense: Cmpile all crrectins and changes required by the readers, make the apprpriate changes in yur text, and submit the final PDF cpy nline per instructins frm the Caspersen Schl. PrQuest Data Base: Drew recmmends the traditinal publishing and is free. The fee fr cpyrighting may range between $30 and $40. This fee is paid n line. Frnt matter 1. Margins: Tp 1.5 t 2 inches; bttm 1 t 1¼ inches; left 1½ inches; right 1 inch. Fr titles that take mre than ne line, if pssible use the inverted pyramid style, and center each line and duble space between the lines. There shuld be n mre than 45 characters, including spaces, n any ne line f the title. 2. Abstract Frmat, (page 7): Duble-space the text f yur abstract. Margins: One and half inch n the left, then ne inch at the tp, right and bttm. A cpy f the abstract will be included in the final nline submissin f the dissertatin. The placement fllws the cpyright page pages are cunted as part f the frnt matter althugh the numbers are nt printed. (See the frnt matter sample packet.) Shuld be dated the mnth and year when yu degree is cnferred. Back Matter 1. The Vita, (Page 8) Include degrees frm each institutin.
