Author's Purpose

Welcome! What does it mean to have a point of view about something? When you read, does the author always tell you their point of view or opinion? 2

Objective: I can determine author s purpose and point of view, and explain how it is conveyed in a text. Essential Questions 1. What is author s purpose? 2. What is author s perspective? 3. How does an author communicate purpose and point of view?

Author s Purpose What is it? Author s purpose is the reason why the author chose to write that particular article, story, or book. 4

An author writes for many reasons. An author may give you facts, or true information, about a subject. If so, they are writing to inform. Some authors write fiction stories, or stories that are not true. They write these stories to entertain you. Other authors may write to persuade, or convince. They write this way to try to get you to do, think, or feel something.

What is the author s purpose if the passage contains... Facts or true Information? to Inform or Teach Fiction? to Entertain Tries to get you to do something? to Persuade or Convince
