The Arrangement The music o Austrian comoser ranz Schubert (797-88) bridges the ga beteen the Classical and Romantic music eras. He is most ell-knon or his songs (lieder) and chamber music ieces. Schubert s last major orchestral ork as Symhony No. 9 knon as The Great Symhony. Interestingly this ork could have been comletely lost i it hadn t been or a meeting ith comoser and ianist Robert Schumann. Ten years ater the death o ranz Schubert his brother discovered this reviously unerormed comosition and shared it ith Robert Schumann ho as visiting in Vienna. Schumann took the iece to Leizig Germany here elix Mendelssohn took it on and it as inally erormed in839. Schubert s Andante rom the second movement o the symhony is in the key o A minor. It requently shits beteen minor and major tonalities and is characterized by its march-like melodies and sudden dynamic changes. This arrangement is layable in irst osition but octaves are included or those ho can lay comortably in third and ourth ositions.
