Collection Description Biographical Note E. Wendell Echols (1926-2010), was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a collector of jazz memorabilia, and worked closely with George H. Buck, Jr., businessman and record producer. Echols was a member of the Board of Directors of the George H. Buck, Jr. Jazz Foundation, founded by Buck in 1949. The Foundation was an umbrella organization for Buck's record labels American Music Records, Audiophile Records, Black Swan Records, Circle Records, G.H.B. Records, Jazzology Records, Progressive Records, Solo Art Records, and Southland Records. Echols managed the Audiophile and Circle labels, and was responsible for Circle's dedication to big band music. He died in 2010 at the age of 83. Scope and Content Note This collection contains the papers of E. Wendell Echols from 1942-2005. The collection includes correspondence, as well as material related to Echols's involvement with the George H. Buck, Jr. Jazz Foundation, Audiophile Records, Jazzology Records, and Circle Records. Printed material in this collection includes programs and fliers from myriad musical performances, as well as several issues of the "C.R.C. Newsletter" (Collector's Record Club), a publication affiliated with Jazzology Records. Finally, the collection includes a number of photographs of legendary jazz musicians, including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Charlie Shavers and others. Many of the photographs were taken by famed photographer William P. Gottlieb. Also included are photographs by W.G. Harris and Walt Jones. Arrangement Note Arranged alphabetically by record type. 2
