CONSERVATORY of VICENZA NOT THE USUAL CONSERVATORY

Vicenza, the town of Palladio The famous French art historian Courajod called Vicenza «a place blessed by heaven, one of those nests prepared by nature for the birth of Italian art, which, at the beginning of the Renaissance, didn't fail to flourish.» And Vicenza, declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1994, forms an inseparable pair with Andrea Palladio, because the former doesn't exist without the latter, and the latter, although he worked in other provinces too, left the biggest concentration of his wonderful masterpieces in this territory. Today Vicenza is, in fact, one of Italy's cities with the highest number of monumental complexes compared to its extension. This makes it a real unexpected jewel to those visitors who take a walk in the old town centre. A great part of the architectural works by Palladio was created in the Vicenza territory, starting from 1540. The architect worked without distinction both for private and public clients, thus helping to profoundly change the city's aspect. INDEX The Conservatory of Music Arrigo Pedrollo of Vicenza 3 Our departments: choose yours 5 International relations 8 Erasmus 9 General information 10 Do like Goethe did But perhaps it is Goethe's words in his "Italian Journey" which express the value, the importance and the fascination of Palladio's artwork best: "I arrived but a few hours ago, but I already took a glance at the town, and I saw the Teatro Olimpico and Palladio's buildings... It is only with these monuments before our eyes that we can comprehend their great value. With their bulk and their impressiveness they must, so to say, fill our eyes, whereas the beautiful harmony of their dimensions, not only in the abstract design, but in the whole of their perspective, both what protrudes and what recedes, pleases the spirit. And this is really, in my opinion, the case of Palladio: an extraordinary man, both for what he felt within and for what he could express without."

A long tradition The Conservatory of Music Arrigo Pedrollo of Vicenza The musical education tradition in Vicenza was formally sanctified in 1867 with the establishment of the Canneti Music Institute. In 1969, the institution became an external branch of the Conservatory of Venice and then, in 1980, transformed into an autonomous State Conservatory and given the title of Conservatorio di Musica Arrigo Pedrollo named after the composer Arrigo Pedrollo (1878-1964). It is located in the complex of the historic monastery of San Domenico. Thanks to the re- novation and restoration completed in 1998, the Conservatory now has a modern and fully equipped structure that allows it to carry out numerous teaching and production activities. The plentiful rooms of the building accommodate more than 100 teachers and over 700 students. The prestigious halls of the Conservatory including the Auditorium Canneti (308 seats - with Organ), the Concert Hall (200 seats), the San Domenico Church, a second Auditorium and numerous rehearsal and classrooms are utilized for teaching, performance and research activities as well as by external organizations and associations with which the Conservatory regularly collaborates. In addition to its core activity of high level Classical music training, the Conservatory of Vicenza has distinguished itself in the last few decades for the realization of innovative educational projects including, most notably, Early music, Jazz and Indian music. It continues to be recognized for the quality and variety of courses it offers, while developing international collaborations and addressing the demands of the society and of the ever-changing musical labour market. The Vicenza Conservatory is also characterized by the rich production activity involving students and teachers in various fields from orchestra to choir to large and small ensembles and solo performances. Artistic and musicological research is well integrated within the Conservatory. Get thee to a nunnery... The early history of the Monastery of S. Domenico in Vicenza is comprised of three major phases: the foundation (dated 1264); the reconstruction with the legacy of Gaspare Trissino (1483); and the restructuring, especially of the cloister, commissioned by the prior of S. Corona, Tommardi Riccardi (1768). It is possible to further identify three successive phases: the suppression of the Monastery by Napoleonic decrees (1806 and 1810); its acquisition by the Municipality (1813); and, finally, the recent transformation of the monumental complex to the Conservatory of Music. The current architectural structures are a result of the rebuilding of the complex that dates back to the end of 1400, thanks to the bequest of 500 gold ducats granted in 1483 by Gaspare Trissino. Therefore, nothing remains of the original construction of the Monastery and the Church. While the Church dates from end of the 15th century, the chancel with its beautiful architrave door was added in the first decades of the 16th century.

La Cina è vicina... and Jerusalem too "La Cina è vicina": this is an Italian phrase that means that China is near... Since 2013 the Conservatory of Vicenza has been receiving students from the Xuzhou Music University in China: here in Vicenza they have the opportunity to study Singing and Opera Singing in an Italian environment. Since 2003 the Conservatory of Vicenza has an open collaborations with the Magnificat Institute in Jerusalem, which became an extended branch of the Conservatory in 2012. International relations Responsibilities belonging to the International Office include: - Preparing the annual call for internal candidates to the Eramsus mobility programme (students, teachers and staff); - Selection of candidates; - Elaboration of mobility applications to foreign schools; - Evaluation and processing of applications for incoming students, teachers and staff; - Language assistance, social integration and housing options for incoming students; - To monitor and assure that formal agreements with foreign schools and visiting students are being met; - Managing administrative deadlines and obligations. The Conservatory of Vicenza is a perfect place to live the Erasmus for the first time. The tutors are very helpful, they want to make you to understand everything in the lectures, even if it is in Italian language. An Erasmus student from Hungary I am grateful that I met new teachers, the experience was useful and practical. Also, I am proud that I could share some information about my own culture with others. An Erasmus internship from Poland Generation Erasmus Since receiving the Erasmus University Charter in 2007, the Conservatory of Vicenza has established Bilateral and Multilateral Agreements with many schools in the EU and has benefited from numerous exchanges of students and staff with institutions throughout Europe. We are committed to strengthening international relationships with partner institutions as well as developing future collaborations with new partners.
