The Idea

Loss Mechanism in fibres MACROBENDING Macro bending loses occur when fibres are physically bent beyond the point of critical angle. In general a bend radius < 25-20 mm is recommended for any standard fibre. Certain Bend Insensitive fibres do however claim to tolerate a bend radius of as little as 5mm. However this may reduce fibre life due to increased stress.

Disadvantages of fibre optics Cost: a fibre optic solution may sometimes appear expensive compared to a copper solution Termination of fibre cable is more complex and requires special tools and precision / careful workmanship Fibre optic cables are potentially more fragile than coaxial cables, sharp bends could break the fibre Needs more expensive optical transmitters and receivers Cannot carry electrical power
