Welcome message Editorial Overview What is the outlook for the solar PV business in the UK? Subsidies have been cut, add to that the shock EU referendum result of last year, and the removal of DECC as a supporting body. It could seem to many that the UK is out of the solar energy business. Where to next for the UK solar supply chain? In the next decade new technologies and strategies will come online and we will have an increasingly smart, flexible energy systems in the UK & ROI as a result. The road to success will include higher efficiency solar panels, energy storage devices, flexible backup power, smarter networks, and consumer participation. What part will the different technologies play? What are the opportunities for your company? Will it ultimately be the most economic or technically adaptable that will prevail? Where next for storage? Responding to Ofgem s call for evidence on A Smart, Flexible Energy System, the Solar Trade Association (STA) has called on the Government to remove all barriers to deployment of energy storage. Following substantial recent reductions in costs associated with storage the industry is ready now to deliver smarter alternatives for a clean energy system that will save money for the consumer. The STA, Ofgem and BEIS have identified a number of barriers to storage deployment. Of importance is the lack of a regulatory definition for storage, leading to problems in treatment under current market rules such as double charging on energy consumption levies. The STA is also calling for stronger standards to support consumer confidence at the domestic level. It is essential that there are minimum standards to ensure storage systems are installed with good components and in a way that is safe and effective. The Government has signalled their intent to revolutionise the network. The National Infrastructure Commission predicts that a flexible, smart network could deliver consumer benefits to the tune of 8 billion a year by 2030. If the Government is going to hit their targets, and deliver these consumer benefits, it is essential that they swiftly overcome the barriers to greater amounts of storage. What of Ireland? In order for Ireland to achieve its 2020 carbon reduction targets, solar must be considered a major part of the renewable energy technology mix. From a policy perspective, Ireland benefits from a late mover advantage. Ireland awaits a sustainable support mechanism to be implemented that will provide appropriate incentives for early investors, without creating a long term burden for taxpayers. The electricity system will undergo a transformation as a result of the growing integration of renewable energy and the implementation of broader technological innovation. The grid will play a key role in shaping a sustainable energy future for Ireland and Northern Ireland. Smart grid developments are an important component of an overall solution for the integration of renewable generation. Very few of the developed countries can cover their primary energy needs from their own resources. For instance, the EU s 27 countries import more than half from outside the EU. Apart from exposure to commodity price risk, this dependence can cause political friction. Renewable energies help decrease that dependence, which is what every country seeks. For that reason, renewable energy is an inevitability. Smart Solar will look at the issues and work with the supply chain in UK and Ireland to support the network as it grows. 2

smartsolar Summit Attending the Smart Solar 2016 event at the BRE Watford was a repeat opportunity for us to get a first-hand review of historical trends and future growth areas within the UK s renewables industry, with a focus on Solar PV in particular. To be able to benefit from the diverse range of speakers experiences and analyses demonstrated at this event is of great value to us as a solutions provider to the trade. Current activities and future plans for diversification are geared towards existing demand requirements, as well as perceived growth areas, so it was particularly encouraging to see and hear so much discussion about energy storage and O&M requirements, as these are key areas where Sibert Solar has, and will continue to, focus our attention on. Aside from this crucial information sharing experience, the social interaction and networking opportunities present at such an event are indispensable, and we look forward to participating in upcoming events of a similar nature this year in Ireland and the UK. Andy O Leary, Business Development Manager, Sibert Solar SmartSolar Conference 2017 Contact us to be involved in 2017, a conference which brings together the whole supply chain. 11
