Mntgmery High Schl Band Guidelines These guidelines are being presented as an additin t the schl handbk and as a guide fr band students and parents t help answer basic questins. I. Attendance 1) All band members are expected t attend all rehearsals, perfrmances and band related functins. Punctuality is f vital imprtance t the band prgram. 2) Our mtt fr attendance is: T be early is t be n time, t be n time is t be late, and t be late is unacceptable! Remember t always be in yur spt, instrument ut, ready t play ten minutes prir t an extracurricular rehearsal r perfrmance warm-up time. Tardies will be issued fr students nt in designated seat with required materials after the preset call time. 3) All missed rehearsals fr academic tutring and appintments must be apprved by band directrs and rehearsal time missed will be made up. As the wrk yu miss in band is difficult t make up, please schedule all rutine dentist, dctr and/r tutring appintments arund band rehearsals. 4) Family emergencies and severe illness are the nly acceptable excused absences. All absences require a signed nte by the parent/guardian. If absences r punctuality becme a prblem, the directrs will make the final decisin as t the student s status in the band prgram. a. This includes, but is nt limited t: mving frm a perfrmance spt t alternate psitin, remval frm marching band and cmplete remval frm the band prgram. b. The directrs reserve the right t assign marching spts, alternates, etc., t best serve the band prgram. c. Students unable t fulfill the expected requirements f the marching band will be remved frm an active spt and placed in an alternate psitin. Alternate psitins are nt a permanent basis and can be challenged ut frm during rehearsals. 5) Parents must cntact the directrs s that the directrs may cnsider the absence befre requesting an alternate travel frm. Once the absence is apprved, an alternate travel frm can be picked up by the parent. Alternate travel frms are due the mrning befre the event s they may be submitted t Dr. Tmmaney in accrdance with schl plicy. We CANNOT accept alternate travel frms after this deadline. 6) Sectinals and afterschl rehearsals are required events and are subject t all schl rules. Attendance at after schl sectinals and rehearsals is required in rder t be enrlled in band. If yu have a transprtatin prblem, please infrm us s that we may help yu. Please nte that thrughut the year, sectinals and rehearsals are held after schl. The students will be infrmed f the rehearsal schedule nce it has been set. Please be aware that the schedule is subject t change depending n the needs f the ensemble, schl days and rehearsals missed, and ther factrs that might arise. The directrs will try t let yu knw as sn as pssible in the event f any changes. 7) Thugh the band staff will try t wrk thrugh any cnflicts that may arise, everyne must cmmit t ur schedule. We must all be willing t put the needs f the grup ahead f ur wn persnal needs. It s nt hw much yu get, it s hw much yu give! Prcedure: 1. Student will be in designated spt with all materials befre the start f class. 2. Tardies will be issued fr students nt in designated spt with required materials Fall Marching Band Rehearsals During the fall prtin f the schl year, all eligible students will participate in the Marching Band. Band rehearsal dates and times will be issued in addendum t this handbk r listed n ur charmsffice.cm calendar.

II. Unifrms It shuld be cnsidered the highest hnr t be allwed t wear the unifrm f yur rganizatin. While in unifrm, yu are easily identified as a member f the Mntgmery High Schl Glden Bear Band. Yur behavir is identified with ur schl and cmmunity. Therefre, yur behavir and attitude shuld always be exemplary. N exceptins. 1) Marching Unifrms will be checked ut during summer band fr the fall semester. All students must sign a unifrm check ut frm fr the prtectin f schl wned prperty. 2) Neglect r abuse f the unifrm will nt be tlerated. 3) Students will need t furnish the fllwing items t be wrn with the marching unifrm: a) Lng Black Scks (nt ankle length r any ther clr - please plan ahead!) b) Black Marching Shes c) Black Marching Shirt d) Black Marching Shrts There is a bster frm fr rdering shrts and shirt when yu pay yur band fees 4) The UIL Cncert Unifrm will be Cncert Black and will be partially prvided by the band: Fr the Gentlemen: i) Black Tux Jacket Prvided ii) White Tux Shirt Student prvides iii) Black Dress Pants Student prvides iv) Black scks, dress shes, bw tie, cumberbund Student prvides Ladies may wear a black bluse and black pants i) Shes shuld have n heels r very lw heels and shuld be clsed-te ii) Hair will nt be required t be pinned; hwever, as stated belw, cnservative appearance will be required. 5) Unifrms are t be wrn nly at band perfrmances by band members. Wear the whle unifrm r nne f it. Als n decratins r rnaments (medals, stickers, etc.) are t be wrn n the unifrm. 6) Anytime a student is representing the band, cnservative appearance will be required. This includes, but is nt limited t, jewelry, hair styles/clrs and bdy piercings. In rder t prevent hair frm tuching yur cllar, it shuld be pinned up. N jewelry r accessries shuld be wrn with the unifrm including wrist watches r earrings ther than studs. N ther visible piercings will be allwed while in unifrm. Students will nt be allwed t have their hair clred r styled inapprpriately, nr is face paint acceptable. We will shw ur schl spirit thrugh ur actins and unifrm. It is imperative that all students fllw these guidelines; if yu have any questins, please cntact a band staff member well in advance. III. Schl Owned Instruments 1) When a student checks ut a schl wned instrument, the student is slely respnsible fr insuring it is prperly cared fr and returned t the schl at the request f the directr. 2) Any repair needed that has resulted frm damages due t irrespnsibility, misuse, r neglect will be the respnsibility f the student and his/her parent r guardian. Each student requiring a schl wned instrument will be issued ne in gd wrking rder if pssible. If it is nt, bring it t yur directr s attentin immediately. The mst cmmn issue students are charged t crrect are stuck slides and/r valves frm neglect. Be sure t keep yur instrument in prper wrking rder fr ur success and yur pcketbk! Abuse f a schl wned instrument will nt be tlerated. 3). The yearly rental fee fr all schl wned instruments is $80.

IV. Grading Grading Plicy Each six weeks f each semester will be graded n a scale f 60% Perfrmance and 40% Participatin grades. Students wh arive late t rehearsals and perfrmances withut a legitimate excuse will be dcked 15 pints. If a student is inelgible fr three grading cnsecutive grading perids, they may be demted a band class r remved frm the band prgram entirely the fllwing semester. At the end f the secnd semester, all students regain their eligibility status fr the fllwing year, if they meet UIL requirements. *Participatin is Attendance, Punctuality, Attitude, and Ensemble Cntributin. V. Private Lessns While private lessns are nt required, they are strngly encuraged. Private lessns are nt nly helpful t students wh are struggling, but are very beneficial t the mre advanced students wh might have gals tward All-Regin Band, All-State Band, Sl and Ensemble Cmpetitin, and/r Cllege Schlarships. Depending n the teacher, private lessns are nrmally ffered during yur child s band class r after schl. VI. Wind Ensemble and Symphnic Band This year, the bands are divided int tw different bands by an auditin prcess. Wind Ensemble is the Varsity perfrming grup. Symphnic Band is the Nn-Varsity perfrming grup Extra time spent during cncert seasn is significantly less then marching seasn, but students will be required t spend at least three hurs utside the scheduled class time per week t meet with the band directr fr sectinal wrk. Students in all bands are expected t d their individual part t make each band successful. In rder fr the band t perfrm at the expected 5-A Varsity level, Wind Ensemble members are encuraged t auditin fr the All-Regin Band during the first semester. In the secnd semester, they will be required t perfrm a sl at the U.I.L. Sl/Ensemble Cntest. Althugh Symphnic band members are nt required, they are als strngly encuraged t participate in any f the abve mentined activities in rder t further their individual musical skills. VII. Letter Jacket Plicy/Lettering in Band T qualify fr a letter jacket befre yur senir year, yu must earn a minimum f 16 pints frm the fllwing ways. All pints are cumulative frm year t year. If students d nt earn the minimum f 16 pints befre their senir year, they will be granted a jacket prvided that they cmplete the fall semester f their senir year in band. Failure t cmplete the first semester f their senir year in band will result in a repssessin f the letter jacket. Band and Clr Guard Members wh are senirs and have been invlved in perfrming Mntgmery High Schl Bands fr all three previus years may be awarded a jacket at the end f their first semester as a senir. Students wh mve in t the prgram (district) shall be cnsidered n an individual basis at the discretin f the directrs. We will fllw MHS and Mntgmery ISD plicies fr rdering letter jackets. Exceptins will be granted at the discretin f the Band Directr (Illness, death, etc.) and students nt adhering t the written disciplinary plicies f the schl and band will frfeit their eligibility fr the senir award jacket.

VIII. State Sl and Ensemble Cmpetitin State Sl and Ensemble Cmpetitin is available t thse students wh earn a 1 r Superir rating frm the UIL Sl and Ensemble Cmpetitin n a Class 1 Sl, and fulfill all ther requirements, such as memrizatin f sl, if required. Class 1 Ensembles, wh als receive 1 r Superir ratings, are eligible t participate in the State Cmpetitin if all members f the ensemble earn a 1 r Superir rating n their individual Class 1 Sls. Participatin in State Sl and Ensemble Cmpetitin is nt required f any student. If a student wishes t participate, and has cmpleted all requirements, they must let a directr knw befre the entry deadline s that their infrmatin can be submitted. The entry deadline will be annunced after District Sl and Ensemble. The schl will prvide the student registratin and fees fr the State Level Cmpetitin; hwever, the student will be respnsible fr their wn ldging, transprtatin, and meals t and frm the cmpetitin. Befre ntifying a directr f the wish t participate, the student must read and understand the bligatins fr travel, ldging, meals, etc.

Guidelines, Plicies, and Rules Relating t Ftball Games and Perfrmance Duble check the itinerary fr the event. Please be aware and respnsible fr rehearsal and departure times. Thrughly check and rganize materials needed fr the game. This will include black band shes, plain black scks, shw shirt, thin shrts t wear under yur unifrm, flip flder (with music in prgram rder), music lyre, and instrument. Jewelry, make-up and extreme hair styles are frbidden while in unifrm. Prir t all marching perfrmances there will be a band inspectin. Inspectin will include cnditin and existence f flip flder with all music, music lyre (if needed), clean r plished black she, plain black scks, prperly altered unifrm. Shined instrument, reeds (if applicable), and required music. Please read and fllw the bus guidelines fund in the Mntgmery High Schl Student Handbk that are established at the beginning f the seasn. Yu shuld ride the same bus that yu rde t the game n. Yu are expected t cperate with the chapernes and bus drivers at all times. While n the bus, d nt extend arms, legs, etc., utside f the bus. Als be seated at all times while the bus is in mtin. HOME GAMES Upn arriving at the Mntgmery Bear Stadium, find yur psitin in the blck befre the designated call time. Instrument Music Black Scks Members shuld be in full unifrm upn arrival at the stadium, The fllwing actins will cause a student t lse participatin pints and privileges. A band directr will determine the apprpriate cnsequence. Tardy Unexcused absences Lack f Necessary equipment Missing parts f unifrm During the game please remember the band is representing Mntgmery High Schl and yu shuld act accrdingly at all times. We want yu t enjy the game and t have a gd time. Hwever, because yu are wearing a unifrm, many different peple will have high expectatins f yu as a band member. Band students shuld stay in their assigned sectin area. Exceptins include: seeking help fr emergency situatins and restrm. Only band persnnel may sit in the band area. This includes student friends that are nt band members. Alumni band members may cme int the stands during the third quarter When yu arrive at yur seat, remain standing until yu are given a signal t sit dwn. Sit /stand when perfrming in a clumn, directly behind the persn in frnt f yu, and put yur hatbx and jacket (when we take them ff, inside ut) t yur right. Keep yur instrument in yur hand r have smene hld it briefly, d nt set it dwn n the bleacher. Fifteen minutes befre the game begins, the annuncer begins a schedule f events, including reading f UIL rules, annuncing the names f the starting lineup, intrduce cheerleaders and a mment f silence. This is fllwed by the visiting band s schl sng and then the hme band schl sng.

Next the teams enter the field while the bands play their fight sng. The natinal anthem is then played r sung by the hme band r chir. We must quietly and respectfully stand and face the flag during the natinal anthem. It is imperative that we be respectful during the perfrmance f the Star Spangled Banner. Singing alng is apprpriate, but please dn t get creative (imitating trumpet parts, etc.) Fr yur prtectin, at ftball games band students d nt g t the bathrm withut permissin f any band directr. Please d yur best t take care f bathrm needs BEFORE we leave the stadium, as there are t many students in band fr everyne t make a trip t the bathrm. Band students shuld always g t the bathrm in pairs. Please limit the time that yu are gne t the bathrm-this IS NOT A TIME TO SOCIALIZE. Please d nt have smene bring yu fd frm the cncessin stand r g t the cncessin stand during the game. Yu will be prvided with water during the game. Yu may als bring yur wn water bttle. During the game- BE READY TO Play. Whatever yu play, play it crrectly with yur best sund, and nly play what is written n the printed page. Watch the drum majr, nt the game while playing. We will stp playing when there is an injured player. While n the field befre half-time, we must lk the same. Put n yur game face and use crrect psture. It is nt apprpriate t talk while n the field. While the ther band perfrms, we will watch standing in check. After the shw keep yur hats n (unless instructed differently). We will play the fight sng as the team cmes nt the field, either n field level r back in the stands. At the end f the game, be prepared t play the Alma Mater (win r lse). We will exit the stands by rws, and we will nt walk n the seats as we leave. We will ask fr trash pick-up twards the end f the game, please clean up yur wn mess. When we return t the schl, listen fr final instructins. Yu will be reminded t raise the windws and clean up any trash. DO NOT EXIT THE BUS AND GET INTO A CAR TO LEAVE. Yu are respnsible fr the lading and unlading f yur wn equipment. D nt exit the bus withut all f yur belngings. Please arrange fr a ride hme each week in advance s that yu d nt have t call t find smene t cme and get yu, and then have t wait even later fr them t arrive at schl D nt hang ut r change in the Band Hall upn arrival back t the schl

Frm #3 Parent/Student UIL Marching Band Acknwledge Frm N student may be required t attend practice fr marching band fr mre than eight hurs f rehearsal utside the academic schl day per calendar week (Sunday thrugh Saturday). This prvisin applies t students in all cmpnents f the marching band. On perfrmance days (ftball games, cmpetitins and ther public perfrmances) bands may hld up t ne additinal hur f practice/warm-up time. Multiple perfrmances n the same day d allw fr additinal practice and/r warm-up time.
