Executive Summary Background CFMU Radio Inc. plans to replace its malfunctioning McCurdy 8800 On Air broadcasting console with the more efficient and better suited AudioArts R55e 2018. The overall sound and functionality of CFMU s On Air studio would be much improved by upgrading its main broadcast console. The McCurdy 8800 console has been in use by CFMU since 1987. The console was donated to the station by CBC Radio (Toronto) and refurbished by John Mathews at Promethean Electronics. The 8800 functioned well for the station until 2001 at which time it started to show signs of failure through aging parts (capacitors/solder connections/switches). After contacting McCurdy Canada, it was determined that parts and servicing for this model were no longer available. Station management was able to find another malfunctioning 8800, through Northern Audio, and was able to scavenge parts for its on air board. After several years of using replacement parts from the second 8800, the station has run out of options for any further repairs. Appenedix 1: McCurdy 8800 (currently in use)
Broken Selector Knobs These knobs allow programmers to switch between A and B channels on each output module. Since these knobs are not only missing, but are also stripped and therefore do not allow us to choose between the input signal of various equipment. E.g. can t switch between aux input and turntable 1. Broken Cue Indicators The cue bus allows programmers to cue up audio before it airs. With these cue buttons currently broken, programmers must poke at the switch with a pen to enable and disable function. Inconsistent Output Gain Master audio output section is failing on right side channel and is irreparable. No spare output module is available for replacement. Non Aux Switches Auxillary output section not functioning on most channels. This is normally used for secondary recording, air checks and monitoring. Volume Pot Has been replaced 3 times in 5 years. Noticeable static through monitors when volume is increased. This makes the signal unlistenable and unreliable for studio monitoring. Parts are no longer available; the last two replacements were custom retro fits. The last retrofit caused major malfunction for several days. AudioArts R55e 2018 While the R 55e is sleeker in form than the earlier R 55, it retains the original core functionality such as two stereo program busses, two mono busses, optional telephone caller input, and opto isolated logic control with built in machine interface. Illuminated LED switches and a flipup meterbridge that provides direct access to I/O connectors and logic programming dipswitches complement the modular, countertop design. The 18 fully functioning output modules would accommodate all of CFMU s broadcast equipment with no compromise to sound quality. The R55 comes recommended by two other campus/community stations (C101/CFRU) that utilize the previous model (R 60) in their On Air studios. R55e2.jpg The cost of the R55e is approximately $16000.00 from Oakwood Audio, a long time supplier of the station that offers CFMU preferred pricing. Oakwood Audio has protected dealership licence, and therefore is the only supplier in Canada that offers AudioArts products. Installation costs through Avtek (Jeff Cudahy) are estimated at $1500.00 based on approximately 80 100 hours of re installation of all audio lines to the new console. Schedule of Installation Due to several other large scale summer projects, CFMU would need to stick to a tight schedule to ensure that installation would be complete before Welcome Week. Our Engineer, Jeff Cudahy has indicated that installation needs to begin by July 6. We ve estimated the install to take approximately 80 100 work hours over a period of two weeks. During this period, the station would temporarily broadcast from its production studio. Conclusion CFMU has serviced its McCurdy 8800 broadcast console for over 25 years. In the last several years, the station has used left over parts from a second console to service the one it currently uses in its On Air facility. In the case of a major malfunction, it is highly unlikely that we would be able to find serviceable parts to repair the 8800. To this effect, the station could only remain On Air by broadcasting from its production facility which is not equipped to accommodate a weekly programming schedule of over 100 shows, many of which utilize the production studio for pre recordings. Furthermore, with many broken features on the 8800 in use, the station has
limited functionality with On Air operations. With consideration to a major malfunction and ongoing issues with this broadcast equipment, we would like to request the capital expenditure of approximately $16,000 for the purchase of an AudioArts R55e radio console for the fiscal year 2009/2010.
