Mr. Jeffries holds a Bachelor of Arts from Texas Christian University and a Master of Fine Arts from Trinity University/Dallas Theatre Center. He retired from secondary school teaching after 32 years in 1995. He has taught at several colleges and universities in Texas including in San Antonio, Incarnate Word, Trinity, St. Philip s and San Antonio College. During his years of competition in the UIL-OAP, he appeared at the State 5A level with a number of shows. He has two first place awards. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Theatre Education Association and has received the Founder s Award from the Texas Educational Theatre Association as well as being Designated Emeritus in 2009. The San Antonio Theatre Coalition appointed him a living legend in 2010 and he was the University Interscholastic League s State Meet Honoree in 2011. since his retirement, he has founded Texas Theatre Consultants and worked with teachers and students across the country helping with curriculum, production and performance. he recently published seven of his UIL cuttings through Samuel French/Baker s Plays and has a number in preparation for an anthology next year. In his spare time he has worked with the Globe Theatre in London and the National Theatre of the Czech Republic. He has just completed teaching three years at San Antonio College. Please read the following information carefully; it will answer many questions and alleviate many difficulties in the planning of the contest and when you arrive for your rehearsal and performance. 1. Eligibility Notice/Entry Please submit an eligibility notice/entry form via the Spring Meet System according to the UIL guidelines. 2. 3. Rehearsals A host student will meet you and your company at the loading dock door at the rear of the building 15 minutes before your scheduled rehearsal time. (to get to loading area, enter Madison on O Connor at the Bus Circle goes around the Baseball Diamond) Please be on time. The host will give you instructions, answer questions, and assist you in the unloading and setting of for your rehearsal. Following the rehearsal, he or she will show you where to store properties and show you the room assigned to your company to use as a dressing room. To avoid any questions during the competition, remember that all uses of the basic set must be fully disclosed to the Contest Manager at the official rehearsal. Unauthorized or undisclosed use of the basic set may be considered a violation. The contest manager shall make any decision concerning the use of the basic set and that decision shall be final. Throughout the rehearsal, there will be the Competition Technical Director and Madison High School technicians available to assist you with the light board, sound board, and rigging/curtain elements. PLEASE BRING AN EMPTY THUMB DRIVE TO RECORD YOUR LIGHT CUES! 4. Dressing Rooms Dressings rooms will be provided for the entire day of the contest. Please secure all personal belongings before leaving the room. Please clear dressing rooms before the Awards Ceremony. This includes all trash, food, etc Please know that only cast, crew, directors, and alternates listed on the eligibility forms will be allowed in the dressing rooms. 5. Staging a. Lighting Lights will be pre-set to cover 15 non gelled acting areas: 3 rows of 5 areas (proscenium to proscenium). Each area will be independently controlled and front light will be operated separately from the down light. There will also be 4 pre-set LED color washes: Blue, Green, Red, and Amber.
All light cues should be recorded. Please bring an empty Thumb drive to record your light cues. We will have a technician in the booth throughout your rehearsal and performance in case they are needed. Light Board is an ETC Ion. Our technician is fluent with this board. If you would like your technician to put in cues, they can be taught the process during your rehearsal. However, the technician will be available to input your cues for you as well. b. Properties and Set The approved UIL set will be available at the contest site. This consists of: 4 two-fold flats, 4 three-fold flats, 2 four foot pylons, 2 six foot pylons, 2 eight foot pylons, 2 four x four platforms, 2 four x eight platforms, 4 one x one platforms, 2 four x four ramps The Cyc will not be available. Storage space for your set will be in the hall outside the back of the stage. c. Sound If you wish to use our sound system, pleas bring your own music of effects. We have a 2 disc system in our booth, and our board is laptop/ipad or ipod compatible. However, if you choose to plug in to our system, please bring your own adaptors and plugs. The intercom system is a wired clear com system. Two sets will be available in the booth and 3 will be available on stage. Please bring with you to rehearsal a sound cue sheet and script with all the cues timed and in play order. d. Stage and Playing Space The stage has 48 foot wide proscenium. The lit apron is 8 feet deep. The stage is 35 feet deep. Main drape is 9.5 feet from edge of stage. 1 st leg is 16 feet from edge of stage.
Mid-stage traveler is 24.5 feet from edge of stage. 2 nd leg is 30.5 feet from edge of stage. The back wall is 49 feet from edge of stage. There will be no fire, flame, tobacco, or burning of anything in the auditorium. The only food or drink allowed in the Auditorium are those used on stage in the performance of the play. The ropes to open the Main Drape and all travelers are located on Stage Left. You may choose to open the curtains yourself or our technician can do this for you. You MAY NOT place any spike tape on the curtain pulls for any reason. You may place tape on the floor to set curtain location. Stage layout and dimensions will be emailed to each advancing director upon request. Please email Cami Murphy at amurph@neisd.net. 6. House Area The house seats 775 guests. There are two levels of seating with 3 sections of seats. We will have several rows reserved for the Judge and timekeepers. Late entrances will not be permitted once a show begins. There is no food or drink allowed in the Auditorium, and no tobacco allowed on the school grounds. 7. The following rules are designed to allow the contest to run effectively: - During rehearsal the theatre and stage must be entirely clear of all persons except the rehearsing company and the host crew. - Casts and crews will take hand props with them to and from rehearsals and performance. - Casts and crews must be absolutely quiet in both approaching and leaving the stage during rehearsal and contest. - Please have a director or one trust-worth member of the company in charge of valuables during the contest. Madison High School is not responsible for the loss of any belongs or valuables of any competing school.
8. Awards and Critiques The announcement of individual awards, advancing plays and the judge s critiques will follow the last performance. The casts are reminded not to re-enter the theatre in makeup or costume. In accordance with the spirit and the purpose of the UIL Play Contest, all casts and crews are encouraged to stay for critiques for all plays. However, we ask that you stay quiet for other show s critiques. If you need or choose to talk, we will ask you to step outside to do so. Form the Leaguer: The Decision: Accepting the judges decision requires graciousness on the part of those who advance as well as those who don t. Receiving an award in the One Act Play Contest is no reason for a riotous demonstration. Applause is the ONLY acceptable method to pay tribute in the theatre. Your task as a director is to so insyruct your students on acceptable theatre etiquette. Please know that we take Theatre Etiquette very seriously here at Madison. Directors should instruct not only their companies on proper behavior, but also their communities. 9. Performing Fee The performance fee of the Area Contest is $300 for each participation school. The check should be made to Madison High School and brought to your rehearsal. 10. Food We will have a concession stand with some meal type food opening before the first show. However, we are within a few minutes of many fast food and sit down restaurants. Food will be allowed in your dressing rooms, however, there will not be any food allowed in the auditorium. 11. Director s Meeting The Director s meeting will be in the Black Box at 2 p.m. with the critic judge, contest managers and timekeepers. Be prepared to give the timekeeper the starting and ending cues for your show.
12. Performances Performances will begin at 3 p.m. and run on the hour. Show order is as follows: District 28 B District 28 A District 27 A District 29 A District 29 B District 27 B 13. Load Out Load out can begin immediately after your show ends. Set can be moved from stage through the Tech Shop to the loading dock if you would like. However, all sets must be outside on the loading dock once the next show is ready to perform. Once a show onstage begins, there will not be any sets allowed to move from their space to outside.
Rehearsal Checklist for April 13 th Proof of royalty payment for performance of the play at this contest. This may be in the form of a letter from the principal acknowledging that royalties have been paid, a copy of the check or purchase order, when provided, a receipt from the publisher. Publisher or author permission to cut is required UIL permission to produce the play if not on the approved list UIL approval for additions to the basic set, if any A clearly marked script showing all cuts, music cues, and approved adaptations. This is in addition to the one that you mailed to the judge.
