2 Scope and Content Notes for the Alice Dwyer-Joyce Collection 1. Biographical Information Born Alice L. Myles in Birr, Offaly, Ireland on September 7, 1913 to John Peacocke Myles and Mary Stuart Myles. Married Robert Dwyer-Joyce on November 21, 1936. The couple were both physicians and practiced medicine together in Histon, Cambridgeshire, UK from 1936 to 1978. Mrs. Dwyer-Joyce published her first novel in 1963, and would go on to publish over thirty over the next two decades. Her fiction focused on romance, small town life, medical practice, and religion. She died in Histon in 1986. 2. Information about the Collection The collection consists of eighteen novel manuscripts, three play manuscripts, and numerous short story manuscripts written by Alice Dwyer-Joyce, mostly from the final decade of her life (1976-1986); roughly two hundred pages of correspondence to and from Mrs. Dwyer-Joyce spanning 1961-1984, mostly relating to her literary career; various other papers connected to Mrs. Dwyer-Joyce s professional and personal lives; forty-four photographs of Mrs. Dwyer-Joyce and her family and friends; and several pieces of personal memorabilia. 3.
