8AM? NO It s 9AM! 9AM (CUE UP) The Beatles - I m So Tired - The Beatles John Lennon s I m So Tired was started and finished in 14 takes on October 8, 1968. No overdubs were added. The session was a marathon 16-hour session which started at 4 p.m. on the 8th and finished at 8 a.m. on October 9 (John s 28th birthday), and saw the completion of two Lennon compositions ( I m So Tired and The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill ) and work on George Harrison s Long Long Long. Written in India while the Beatles were studying Transcendental Meditation under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the all-day regime in Rishikesh, India, prevented John from sleeping at night, so he decided to write A song about it. The Beatles - I m Only Sleeping - Revolver Written by John and Paul at Kenwood, John s estate in Weybridge, in one writing session. Recording of the backing rhythm track began at 11:30 p.m. on April 27, 1966. John recorded his lead vocal on April 29. Both the vocal and backing track were recorded at variable speed. It was during the recording of I m Only Sleeping that The Beatles discovered the backwards guitar. On May 5, 1966, as the band continued working on the song, George painstakingly transcribed the notes in his guitar solo and flourishes and then wrote them out backwards. He then played them in that reverse order. The tapes were then superimposed BACKWARDS in the mix, playing the solo notes and embellishments in the correct order, but maintaining the eerie backwards sound. I m Only Sleeping was one of three songs issued in America six weeks prior to their official release in the UK. American and Canadian Beatles fans heard I m Only Sleeping, And Your Bird Can Sing, and Doctor Robert first on Capitol Records Yesterday And Today album, issued June 20, 1966. The rest of the world had to wait until the first week of August for them to appear on the Revolver LP. 2

Yesterday And Today - Capitol LP The Beatles - I ll Follow The Sun - Beatles For Sale Lead vocal: Paul One of the earliest Beatle originals, I ll Follow The Sun was composed entirely in 1959 by Paul McCartney in the front room of his family home on Forthlin Road in Liverpool. Recorded in eight takes on October 18, 1964. Beatles 65 - Capitol LP A little Daylight Saving time set the kick off this March 9 th edition of BWTB 9.10 BREAK So a little heads up If & when you hear Pattie Boyd remind you to turn yer clocks ahead an hour be the 9 th caller @ 800.955.KLOS and get yerself a $50 Kobe Steakhouse gift certificate write that down and we ll be right back live from the Kobe Steakhouse Seal Beach The Beatles - I ll Be Back - A Hard Day s Night Recorded in 16 takes on June 1, 1964. I'll Be Back was written mostly by John Lennon, and was a reworking of the chords to Del Shannon's 1961 hit Runaway. Beatles fans in America would have to wait five months to hear this exquisite Beatles song, one of Lennon finest compositions, because Capitol Records held it off their Something New album and released it on Beatles 65 in December 1964. Beatles 65 - Capitol LP The Beatles - You ve Got To Hide Your Love Away - Help! 3

Recorded in less than two hours on February 18, 1965. Written entirely by John Lennon, who freely admitted the obvious Bob Dylan influence. Lennon wrote this at Kenwood, his home on the St. George s Hill estate in Weybridge, Surrey (where the Beatles would be photographed for the cover of their Rubber Soul album). John s original lyric was I can t go on feeling two foot tall, but when singing it for Paul the first time he accidentally said, two foot small. Lennon then laughed and said, Let s leave it all those pseudes will really love it. The first of their songs since Love Me Do in 1962 to feature an outside musician. Johnnie Scott provides the flute solo at the end of the song, though he is not credited on the album jacket. Help! - Capitol LP 4

Paul & Linda McCartney - Another Day Also written around the Let it Be sessions, this was a similar narrative to Eleanor Rigby, again dealing with a lonely woman. This was specifically referenced in John s How Do You Sleep in the Imagine album. The Beatles - It s Only Love- Help! Recorded in six takes on June 15, 1965. The first Beatles song to include a reference to getting high ( I get high when I see you go by ). The working title prior to lyrics being written was That s a Nice Hat. George Martin and his Orchestra recorded the instrumental version of It s Only Love using the original title. In 1972 Lennon called It s Only Love the one song I really hate of mine. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - If I Needed Someone - Rubber Soul (Harrison) Lead vocal: George 5

The fourth original composition by George Harrison to be recorded by The Beatles was heavily inspired by the 12-string guitar sound of The Byrds. The introduction of George Harrison s If I Needed Someone is strikingly similar to the introduction of The Byrds The Bells Of Rhymney. Harrison commented that the song was like a million other songs written around the D chord. The backing track was recorded in one take on October 16, 1965. George s double-tracked lead vocal and John and Paul s backing vocals were added two days later. The song was performed live by The Beatles in late 1965 and was a staple of their 1966 world tour. Yesterday and Today - Capitol LP The Beatles - No Reply - Beatles For Sale Recorded in eight takes on September 30, 1964. Written entirely by John Lennon. John and Paul had been giving away a treasure trove of original compositions to other artists to record and release because they felt the songs were too pop for Beatles records. John had planned to give No Reply to another Brian Epstein managed artist, Tommy Quickly, to record, but those plans were cancelled in early August 1964 when it was determined the group was going to be short of new material for their upcoming album. The song s storyline was based somewhat on Silhouettes, a number three hit in the U.S. for the R&B group the Rays, which was later covered with great success by Herman s Hermits. Lennon: I had that image of walking down the street and seeing her silhouetted in the window and not answering the phone. Includes some nice piano work from producer George Martin. Beatles 65 - Capitol LP 6

The Beatles - All I ve Got to Do With The Beatles Written entirely by John Lennon and introduced to the other Beatles at the session at which it was recorded, The Beatles never played the song again. Lennon has said this soulful ballad was his attempt at making a Smokey Robinson song. Recorded on September 11, 1963 in 14 takes with an overdub (presumably George s introductory guitar chord) becoming take 15 and the finished version. All I ve Got to Do marked a rare instance in which John s lead vocal was not double-tracked. Meet The Beatles! - Capitol LP The Beatles - A Taste of Honey Please Please Me (Scott-Marlow) Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles knew that adding a variety of music styles to their stage act would garner them more bookings. They loved ballads and were always on the hunt for songs that would add a touch of sophistication to their live show. Among the songs they found to fit this need was the ballad A Taste Of Honey. A popular instrumental of the day, the band came across a version with lyrics and added it to their repertoire in 1962. Bobby Scott s original version won the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Theme of 1962. The title was sometimes sung as A waste of money by Beatle John at 1962 and 1963 shows. Paul s vocal was double-tracked here, the only time this was done on the debut LP. On U.S. albums: Introducing The Beatles - Vee-Jay LP The Early Beatles - Capitol LP 7

The Beatles - I Call Your Name - Long Tall Sally EP Composed by John Lennon and originally given to Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas to use as the b-side of another Lennon song (credited to Lennon- McCartney), Bad to Me. Both songs had been recorded at Abbey Road by Kramer and band on June 27, 1963, with Paul McCartney in attendance. The Beatles version was recorded in seven takes on March 1, 1964. The Beatles Second Album - Capitol LP U.K.: Non-album track (EP song) 9.42 BREAK If when you hear Pattie Boyd remind you to turn yer clocks ahead an hour be the 9 th caller @ 800.955.KLOS and get yerself a $50 Kobe Steakhouse gift certificate can we get a Good morning!? 8

Paul plays one of the guitar solos w/ his right-handed Fender Esquire. Lead vocal John Lennon 1.00 The Beatles Good Day Sunshine Revolver Recorded June 8 th 1966 One of the fastest recorded tracks from the Revolver sessions. 11 Inspired in part by John and George's first experience with acid, "Day Tripper" was written under pressure for use as a single for the Christmas season. John wrote most of the song, with Paul contributing to each of the verses Wings Time to Hide Wings at the Speed of Sound 76 Denny Laine sings lead vocals on this song that he wrote. It later became one of his staples during the live shows. Daylight Saving Time Set #2 on yer Sunday March 9 th 2014 NEWS HERE 11

10.12 BREAK * Includes >Banana Mellows spot/bumper into music/ The Beatles - It Won t Be Long With The Beatles The first original song recorded for their second album, With The Beatles. Composed primarily by John in July 1963 with the intention of writing a follow-up single to the as yet unreleased She Loves You. The lyrical similarity to the chorus of She Loves You (both songs contain the phrase yeah, yeah, yeah ) was no accident. Beatles manager Brian Epstein had encouraged John and Paul to try to write songs that would appeal to the American market, specifically American teenagers. Soon American colloquial sayings and words started showing up in their songs. Ten takes were attempted on July 30, 1963 and the song was left unfinished. The group resumed work later that evening, in all logging 23 full or partial takes and edit pieces. It is the first original Beatles song with a call-and-response gimmick, with John and Paul alternating yeah throughout the song. The first song Neil Young performed live for an audience at his high school cafeteria in Canada. Meet The Beatles! - Capitol LP Get Smart The Beatles - Roll Over Beethoven With The Beatles (Berry) 12

Lead vocal: George Chuck Berry s rock and roll standard was released as a single in May 1956 on Chess Records. It peaking at #29. A staple of The Beatles live show from the earliest days, Beatles fans will be surprised to learn that John Lennon was the lead singer of the song in those very early club days. In 1961 George Harrison took over lead vocals. Roll Over Beethoven was the opening song at The Beatles first concert in America, February 11, 1964 in Washington D.C., and opens Capitol s The Beatles Second Album, released on April 10, 1964. The Beatles Second Album - Capitol LP Get Smart The Beatles - Back In The U.S.S.R. - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul Written while in India, Paul s Back In The U.S.S.R. is based on Chuck Berry s 1959 hit Back In The U.S.A., but was written to mimic the classic sound of the Beach Boys. Beach Boys lead singer Mike Love was on the Transcendental Meditation sojourn in India with the Beatles in the spring of 1968 and as McCartney was working on his new song, Love suggested the lyrics about Ukraine and Moscow girls, similar to his lyrics in California Girls. Recording began on August 22, 1968, and it was during this session 13

that Ringo Starr officially quit the band. His departure was blamed on a disagreement with Paul over his drumming. Ringo flew to the Mediterranean to spend time on actor Peter Sellers yacht. It was there that he wrote Octopus s Garden. On September 3, Ringo returned to the studio to find his drum kit smothered in flowers. Ringo: I felt tired and discouraged took a week s holiday, and when I came back to work everything was all right again. But Ringo added, Paul is the greatest bass guitar player in the world. But he is also very determined; he goes on and on to see if he can get his own way. While that may be a virtue, it did mean that musical disagreements inevitably arose from time to time. Get Smart The Beatles - Sexy Sadie - The Beatles On February 19, 1968, the Beatles left the comforts of the UK for an oft-postponed extended trip to Rishikesh, India. Arriving the next day, they had come to learn the powers of mediation under the direction of Indian guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at the Academy of Transcendental Meditation. The compound was located 150 feet above the Ganges surrounded on three sides by jungle-covered mountains. Students would live in stone cottages. Each cottage had twin beds and modern bathroom facilities. George Harrison had been enlightened by the Indian culture and the Maharishi s teachings and invited his band mates to immerse themselves in it as well. But instead of rejuvenating the other Beatles, the trip became tedious. Ringo and wife Maureen left Rishikesh after 10 days, complaining of missing their children and not liking the food. John and Paul turned it into a songwriting vacation, much to Harrison s irritation. Paul and girlfriend Jane Asher returned to England on March 26. In April, things came to a head when a rumor circulated that the Maharishi had made sexual advances toward at least one of the women at the compound. 14

* Pattie clocks #2 /GET WINNER The Beatles - Taxman - Revolver (Harrison) Lead vocal: George 15

Completed in 11 takes on April 21, 1966. Written by George when he started realizing the majority of his money was going to the British government in the form of taxes. George went to John Lennon for some help with the lyrics, and Lennon was especially pleased with his line Now my advice for those who die: declare the pennies on your eyes. Featuring a nice lead guitar solo by Paul on his Epiphone Casino. The pennies lyrical reference derives from Greek mythology it is the payment to Charon (the ferryman of the underworld) to ferry the deceased to their destination in the underworld. To pay the ferryman, the deceased person's relatives place a coin on each eye of the deceased. The Mr. Wilson and Mr. Heath mentioned in the song were real people. Harold Wilson was the Prime Minister and Edward Heath was head of the opposition party at the time the song was recorded. It is the first time a George Harrison composition opens a British Beatles album. Revolver - Capitol LP BREAK SAY WINNERS NAME (get from Mark while Taxman is playing) ---------------------------------------------------- OK I gotta a little test for ya here at Kobe or at home maybe yer driving so Try and not move yer head while listening to this next song I bet you won t be able to do it let see It will actual hurt if you don t move it..ready? 16

The Beatles - Tell Me Why - A Hard Day s Night Completed in eight takes on February 27, 1964 in between And I Love Her and If I Fell. Tell Me Why was written primarily by John and was his attempt to mimic the New York girl group sound The Beatles were so fond of. 18 The Beatles - The Word - Rubber Soul Recorded in three takes at a late night session starting on November 10, 1965 that ran until 4 a.m. the next morning. Overdubs include Paul on piano, George Martin on harmonium, and Ringo playing the maracas. The song is a full collaboration between Lennon and McCartney, and began as an attempt to write a song based around a single note. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP ADD LONG QUIZ TONES HERE For all 12 US Beatles CD s What was the Beatles last #1 single in Great Britain? 18

George Harrison Don t Let Me Wait Too Long - Living In The Material World 73 This track was the single that should have been, almost was, but never appeared. This is a prime piece of pop songwriting, and was scheduled as the second single from the LP for release on September 24 th, 1973. It was assigned an Apple catalog number (Apple 1866), but was mysteriously cancelled at the last minute. What was the Beatles last #1 single in Great Britain? Also.BANNED IN PARTS OF THE USA! As a matter of fact all of the following songs were banned by the BBC or FCC (Hit It) 19

A/The Beatles - The Ballad Of John And Yoko - Non-LP track The Beatles twentieth single release for EMI, and third on the Apple Records label. The first Beatles single issued in stereo in the UK, it is also the very first stereo single issued by EMI. The Get Back single had been released in stereo in America by Capitol. Recorded on April 14, 1969, by just John and Paul, the song was completed that day. George was on vacation and Ringo was still filming the Peter Sellers comedy The Magic Christian. Producer George Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick, who had distanced themselves from the group because of the constant bickering amongst the group members, were back on board behind the recording console. The single was a complete surprise to Beatles fans. They had waited a long seven months for the group to followup Hey Jude with Get Back and now just over a month came another new Beatles record. The rhythm track was perfected in 11 takes (four complete) with Paul playing drums while John played acoustic guitar and sang the lead vocal. The duo was in good spirits during the day-long session. Prior to take four John said to drummer Paul Go a bit faster, Ringo! and Paul replied OK, George! Overdubs featured Paul on bass guitar, piano, backing vocal and maracas, and John on two lead guitar parts and percussive thumping on the back of an acoustic guitar. The song recounts the chaos surrounding John and Yoko s getting married. Lennon had encountered visa problems 20

because of his November 1968 drug conviction which made his movement from one country to another very difficult. As an example, he was not allowed to enter the United States at this time so the couple s second Bed-In was staged in Montreal, about an hour north of the U.S. border in Canada. John knew the song s controversial chorus was going to cause problems, particularly coming from the man who three years earlier had claimed the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. Christ! You know it ain t easy You know how hard it can be The way things are going They re gonna crucify me Hey Jude - Capitol LP (1970) 21

NOT BBC BUT USA 22

The Beatles - I Am The Walrus - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) The Beatles sixteenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. John Lennon pushed to have his I Am The Walrus as the A-side of the coupling with Paul s Hello, Goodbye, but his song was deemed too unconventional and less commercial than Paul s catchy tune. The title is inspired by the Walrus and the Carpenter from Lewis Carroll s Through The Looking Glass. Lennon described his lyrics as purposely being Dylan-esque. In his 1980 Playboy interview he explained, In those days I was writing obscurely, a la Dylan, never saying what you mean, but giving the impression of something. The I Am The Walrus session is notable because it was the first Beatles recording session following the untimely death of their manager, Brian Epstein. Ironically, Epstein had stopped by the last time the Beatles were recording (for Your Mother Should Know at Chappell Recording Studios on August 23, 1967). He was found dead on August 27, aged just 32. Magical Mystery Tour - Capitol LP BANNED BBC The Beatles - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band Recorded March 1, 1967. John Lennon s classic song of psychedelic imagery was inspired by a drawing brought home by son, Julian, who was four years old at the time. In February 1967, Julian returned home from his nursery school with a painting depicting one of his classmates, Lucy O Donnell. Young Lucy was pictured with a background of stars in the sky. When asked by his father about his painting, Julian said it was Lucy, in the sky, with diamonds. John was so taken with the phrase he combined it with passages similar to two books by Lewis Carroll that he d loved as a child, Through The Looking Glass and Alice s Adventures in Wonderland. Paul added the line about newspaper taxis and Lennon s beloved Goon Show got a shout out. Their famed plasticine ties merged with Through the Looking Glass to become plasticine porters with looking glass ties. Work began on Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds with an evening full of rehearsals. The rhythm track was recorded on March 1 with Paul playing the opening riff on a Lowery organ (with a bell stop), George on acoustic guitar, Ringo on drums and John on maracas and offering a guide vocal. John s lead vocal and other instruments (George s tamboura, Paul s melodic bass) were added the next evening. BANNED BBC Wings Hi Hi Hi Radio Spot `72 24

Wings Hi Hi Hi Single `72 Written in Spain earlier in the summer, it was a great rocking tune that brought back some credibility to Paul s solo efforts. The BBC banned it on November 30 th, 1972 for suggestive language and drug references. Paul had used the word polygon but it was incorrectly listed as body gun in the lyrics BANNED BBC Some BANNED songs from the naughty Beatles Others included: USSR A Day In The Life Working Class Hero Give Ireland Back To The Irish 11.12 BREAK The Beatles - In My Life - Rubber Soul 25

Lead vocals: John with Paul Recorded October 18, 1965 and written primarily by John, who called it his first real major piece of work. Of all the Lennon-McCartney collaborations only two songs have really been disputed by John and Paul themselves -- Eleanor Rigby and In My Life. Both agree that the lyrics are 100% Lennon, but John says Paul helped on the musical bridge, while Paul recalls writing the entire melody on John s Mellotron. The gorgeous piano solo is provided by George Martin. To give his solo a harpsichord sound the producer played the piano at half speed and an octave lower so that when played at regular speed it would be in the correct key for the song. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul while in Rishikesh, India. In Barry Miles Many Years From Now Paul recalls walking through the Indian jungle near the Maharishi s compound with his guitar singing Ob-La,Di, Ob-La, Da, life goes on, bra, taking the phrase from Jimmy Scott, a Nigerian conga player who had been a part of the London music scene since the 50s. In Scott s native language, Ob la di ob la da is an expression meaning life goes on. Paul created characters for his story - Desmond and Molly and their barrow in a Caribbean marketplace. A barrow is a cart or small vehicle used to carry a load and pulled or pushed by hand. The Beatles - Twist And Shout Please Please Me (Medley-Russell) The last song recorded during the marathon session on February 11, 1963. Two takes were completed before Lennon s voice gave out. The released version is the first take. Originally recorded by The Isley Brothers in May 1962, The Beatles performed it regularly in their live act between 1962 and 1965. Its inclusion in the 1986 film Ferris Bueller s Day Off sent the song up the Billboard singles chart 22 years after its initial U.S. release. On U.S. albums: Introducing The Beatles - Vee-Jay LP The Early Beatles - Capitol LP 26

The Beatles - All Together Now - Yellow Submarine Lead vocal: Paul In May 1967, with the Sgt. Pepper album in the can and awaiting release, the Beatles went to work on two projects at the same time. They began recording the title track for Magical Mystery Tour and also starting to record the new songs they had promised for the Yellow Submarine film. The first song specifically recorded for the Yellow Submarine film was Baby, You re A Rich Man (on May 11, 1967), but that song was pulled several months later to fill the B-side of the All You Need Is Love single. George Harrison s Sgt. Pepper reject Only A Northern Song was added to the stack of film songs. Paul s sing-along All Together Now was started and finished on May 12, 1967. Nine takes were recorded. Instruments included two acoustic guitars (probably Paul and George), bass guitar (Paul), bass drum (Ringo), harmonica and banjo (John). Pick a song Ardy phones in 27
