Fire Safety in Your Home Smoke alarms together with a well-practiced plan, can help your family survive a fire. Smoke is the killer in most fires and it spreads fast. You must get outside quickly. Having working smoke alarms is the first important step in your family s survival. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home (including the basement), outside each sleeping area, and inside every bedroom. For best protection, interconnect the smoke alarms throughout the home, so that when one sounds, they all sound. Test the alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button to make sure it sounds. Replace the batteries every year. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years or immediately if they do not respond properly when tested. If you don t know how old your alarms are, look on the back of the alarm for the manufacture date. Press your smoke alarm button at night when the children are sleeping so you will know who will easily awaken to a smoke alarm and who may not. Have a plan to physically get heavy sleepers out of bed, or install smoke alarms that can be programmed with a parent s voice alerting the child of fire. (Studies have shown that some children respond better to these types of alarms.) Once you know you have good working smoke alarms, you need to make sure everyone in your family knows how to respond to them. You can do this by making a fire escape plan with your family and practicing a fire drill at least twice a year. Have everyone in your family sleep with bedroom doors closed, to help contain the spread of smoke and to create extra time to make it out a window if the hallway is impassable. Crawl low under smoke. Feel doors for heat before opening them. If they are hot, find a different way out. Teach everyone in your household how to unlock and open all windows and doors. Keep stairways and exits clear and free from clutter. Have an outdoor meeting place where everyone will gather once you ve escaped. Once you make it outside, stay outside. Call the fire department from a neighbor s phone or from a cell phone once you have escaped. For more information, contact the Overland Park Fire Department at 913-895-8400.
