Answers to Exercise 3.3 (p. 76) First of ll, check to see tht you hve weighted your dtset with the vrible WTCORRCT (see Figure 2.5 on p. 52 for how to do this). Once this hs been done, you then need to use the Dt Split File procedure to split the output you re going to generte by the two vribles RACEETHN nd HINCOME2 s shown below: Once done, ll you now need to do is to run the Anlyze Descriptive Sttistics Frequencies procedure for the vrible SEREPEAT. The min frequency tbles you should get for ech of the 12 sub-ctegories re shown below. The footnotes to ech of the tbles will tell you which prticulr ctegory tht tble refers to. Pge 1 of 6

As cn be seen, the ctegory tht hs the highest proportion of children who hve hd to repet yer (21.6 per cent) is the Blck, non-hispnic group with the lowest fmily incomes (i.e. between $0 nd $30,000). Interestingly, the ctegory lest likely to hve to repet yer (just 4.0 per cent) re children from All Other Rces with the highest fmily incomes (i.e. $60,001 nd over). Unfortuntely, without more informtion on wht prticulr rcil groups re included in this ctegory it is difficult to interpret this ny further. Finlly, while this exercise hs given you more experience of using the Dt Split File procedure, it is worth pointing out tht this isn t relly the most efficient wy of undertking this prticulr nlysis. Rther, you cn ctully crete one contingency tble including ll three vribles. To do this you would use the Anlyze Descriptive Sttistics Crosstbs procedure s illustrted below: In ddition, use the Cells button to select row percentges. When done, you should get the frequency tble overlef. If you don t then you my need to reset the Dt Split File procedure first. As cn be seen, the tble produced is much simpler to red nd interpret. One thing to note however is tht some of the percentge figures do differ very slightly between the tbles creted by the split file procedure nd those in the three-wy contingency tble overlef. This is due to the ppliction of weights nd rounding errors. Pge 5 of 6
