Friction Instructions for Authors 1. Manuscript submission The following types of manuscripts on all topics within the scope of the journal are welcomed : Original research articles. Short communications on topics of immediate interest. Reviews (with the prior approval of the Editor-in-Chief). Authors should submit their manuscripts using the Online Manuscript Submission, Review and Tracking System at http://mc03.manuscriptcentral.com/friction/. When submitting your manuscript, please provide names and email addresses of two suggested reviewers. Note that the editor retains the sole right to decide whether or not the suggested reviewers are used. Permissions. Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) and to state clearly in the figure/table caption or other appropriate locations in the manuscript that such permission has been obtained. All materials received without such statements will be assumed to be original from the authors. 2. Manuscript preparation Language Please write your text in good English. Either American or British usage is accepted, but the system chosen should be followed consistently throughout the manuscript. We request that the language is corrected before submission. Submissions with unsatisfactory English will be returned without review. Length of manuscripts There are no strict limits on the length of the manuscripts for both research papers and review articles. Short communications, however, will be no longer than four printed pages, including equivalent word counts for figures and tables. Three manuscript pages (12-point font, typed in double space) equal approximately one printed page. Manuscript structure and instruction Please follow this order when typing manuscript: Title page, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, List of symbols, Appendix, References, Tables, Figure captions, and then Figures. Title page The title page should contain: A concise and informative title The name(s) of the author(s) The affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s)

The e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers of the corresponding author Abstract Please provide a concise and factual abstract not exceeding 300 words. The abstract should state briefly the purpose of the research, the principal results and major conclusions. Footnotes, references, figures and tables should be avoided in the abstract. Keywords Please provide 4 to 6 keywords which can describe the manuscript for indexing purposes. Heading/Section levels (numbered) For regular Research Papers and Review Articles, please use the decimal system of headings. Please divide your article into clearly defined and numbered sections and subsections. Sections should be numbered 1, 2, etc. (The abstract is not included in section numbering). Subsections should be numbered 1.1 (then 1.1.1, 1.1.2,.), 1.2, etc. Use this numbering also for internal cross-referencing: do not just refer to the text. Each section and subsection should be given a brief heading, and each heading should appear on its own separate line. For Short Communication, no section levels are needed. Text formatting The authors should use a recent version of MS-WORD in either Windows or Macintosh format to prepare their manuscript, using a normal, plain font (e.g., 12-point Times New Roman), double space line, and one column for text. Footnotes Footnotes to the text should be numbered consecutively and placed at the bottom of the page to which they refer. Footnotes to the tables should be indicated by superscript lower-case letters (or asterisks for significance values and other statistical data) and placed immediately below the table. Formulae and symbols Formulae, symbols and all subscripts, superscripts, Greek letters, and other characters must be legible and carefully checked. Standard mathematical notation should be used. All symbols used in manuscript must be explained. If necessary, a list of symbols may be provided and placed immediately after Reference section. Equations Please number consecutively any equations that have to be displayed separately from the text (if referred to explicitly in the text), e.g., F = α Ar + βw (1) and refer the equation with Eq. (1), Eq. (2),, in the text. For the simple formulae appeared in the line of normal text, please use solidus (/) instead of a horizontal line for small fractional terms, e.g., x/y. In principle, variables should be presented in italics. Powers of e are often more conveniently denoted by exp. Figures The preferred figure format is TIFF, EPS or JPEG with the resolution of 600dpi relative to the final figure size. All figures should be numbered using Arab numerals (figure parts should be denoted by lowercase letters) and supplied in a separate electronic file with a figure caption. Please make sure that all elements found in the figure are identified in the caption. Figures should be cited in text, such as Fig. 1, Fig. 2, in consecutive numerical order. Color figures will be published in both the printed version and the online version, at no additional charge.

Tables Please supply a table title for each table. The table title should explain clearly and concisely the components of the table. All tables should be numbered using Arab numerals and cited in text, such as Table 1, Table 2, in consecutive numerical order. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript (for example, in figures). Units and abbreviations Please adhere to internationally agreed rules and conventions such as those defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). If other units are mentioned, please give their equivalent in SI. Abbreviations should be used only if deemed absolutely necessary, and should be defined at first mention in the abstract and again in the main body of the text and used consistently thereafter. Acknowledgements Please collate acknowledgements in a separate section before the Reference list. Do not include acknowledgements on the title page, as a footnote to the title or otherwise. List here the acknowledgements of people, grants, funds, etc. The name of funding organizations should be written in full. Citation in text References to the literature are cited by number in square brackets at appropriate locations (before a period, comma, etc.) in the text. Examples: (a) Two different models were proposed for the description of adhesion in contact, Johnson Kendal Roberts (JKR) model [1] and Derjaguin Muller Toporov (DMT) model [2]. (b) Metal nanoparticles as lubrication additives have been widely studied [3 6, 8]. (c) Similar phenomena on the friction were observed by J. Ruan and B. Bhushan [5, 7, 9]. List of references Please number the references in the list at the end of the manuscript text, in the order of their first citation in the text. Each numbered reference may contain only one literature citation. The list of references should only include works that are cited in the text and that have been published or accepted for publication. Papers accepted for publication are cited as in press. Do not use footnotes or endnotes as a substitute for a reference list. Examples: (a) Reference to a journal publication [1] Li G, Zhang C H, Luo J B, Liu S H, Xie G X, Lu X C. Film-forming characteristics of grease in point contact under swaying motions. This will ensure the widest possible protection and dissemination of indentation under copyright laws. Proof reading The purpose of the proof is to check for typesetting errors and the completeness and accuracy of the text, tables and figures. Substantial changes in content, e.g., new results, corrected values, title and authorship, are not allowed without the approval of the Editor-in-Chief. Online first The article will be published online after receipt of the corrected proofs. This is the official first publication citable with the DOI. After release of the whole issue, the paper can also be cited by issue and page numbers. After online publication, further changes can only be made in the form of an Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article.
