This month we rollback some old memories for a lot of you that have lived in Marseilles all of your life. The small town hardware store has always been a spotlight in the local community. From building your house or remodeling a room, or getting new appliances or repairing a broken fixture, you probably have been into Gleason & Co Hardware and Furniture more than once. Gleason s first opened in 1933 by Willard Gleason after years of making furniture and repairing appliances out of his home. He had 3 daughters, Wilma Billie (Schafer), Gloria (Lettsome) and Dea (Carle) that spent a lot of time hanging out and helping their dad at the hardware store while they were kids. Eventually, Billie took over the business and introduced the next generation of family to the hardware store. On the day we interviewed Gleason Hardware, the 2018 Freedom Run was getting underway. The family was all there to show their support and to have their doors open for business or shade on this very hot day. Billie was there for the big event and to show her patriotic support and love for our country. Dressed all in red, white and blue, Billie sat down with her daughter, Michelle and son, Brent to reminisce with Connected Magazine about the history of the hardware store. There were so many stories to be told but only a small time to hear them while the town was getting ready for the parade to start outside. But, we continued through the memories that Billie shared with us along with the many memories Brent and Michelle have from growing up with the store also. What an amazing bit of history this store has since first opening its doors over 85 years ago. One of the many memories of Marseilles that came to mind with Billie was during World War II the town would protect the Nabisco Plant with fear the waterways would be bombed. This was considered a major waterway and a possible attack could happen. She continued sharing more memories, including when the store opened its doors on Friday and Saturday nights until 8 p.m. They did this to allow farmers time to get items they needed. Brent and Michelle added in that they would hang out at the store on those nights and watch TV on the new televisions that were on display. A memory that is etched in time for Brent was the big fire of one of their buildings in 1973. He was a young kid and remembers trying to save stuff by hauling it out after making sure everyone got out safely. The building would eventually be rebuilt in 1984 to a newer metal building structure. There are too many memories to share in this little article, but stop in sometime and give them a visit. They would be happy to share memories with you or sell you a needed hardware item with a friendly small town smile! They are located at 385 Main St in Marseilles. On The Cover Getting ready for the big motorcycle parade celebrating the Illinois Motorcycle Freedom Run to the Middle East Conflicts Memorial Wall are four generations of Gleason s. Pictured are Brent, Billie, Michelle, Calvin, Cortney, Claudia, Adrian, and Alex. MTCO Communications 220 N.
