Miss FQ is Fashion Quarterly s millennial brand extension. Affectionately referred to as Fashion Quarterly s little sister, Miss FQ borrows from the fashion credibility and aspirational values of the FQ masthead to provide cutting-edge inspiration for teens and millennials on all things fashion, beauty, celebrity, fitspo, careers, life and love. The Miss FQ brand launched in June 2016 at MissFQ.co.nz and immediately cemented itself as the go-to destination for smart, stylish, savvy young women looking to FOMO-proof their lives by being the first to know what s #trending both at home and abroad. The first Miss FQ print edition went to market in November 2016. Now a quarterly publication spearheaded by associate editor Phoebe Watt under the guidance of managing editor Sally-Ann Mullin, each issue calls on the insights and expertise of a contributing squad of beauty and fashion influencers and cultural tastemakers, all of whom speak to the brand s millennial audience in their own language, while challenging perceptions of what it means to be a millennial.

FROM THE ASSOCIATE EDITOR Forget what you thought you knew about millennials. Far from the entitled, selfish and narcissistic stereotype, this generation of young adults is resourceful, creative, community-minded, and all about getting s*** done. This fuels the Miss FQ team in creating content for our online, social and print channels the latter of which is going quarterly in 2018. I mean, what an achievement. And proof too, that our savvy, millennial audience doesn t want to consume content exclusively digitally. Don t get me wrong they love to be connected 24/7. But in this uber-digital world, they also relish the opportunity to switch off with a physical, tangible, thoughtfully-designed product, and that s where we come in. By we I mean the Miss FQ team, our advertising partners and our audience. We re for millennials, by millennials after all, and this unique publishing model which sees us working with beloved brands while simultaneously utilising the talents and experiences of our readers, ensures that we are speaking to them in their own language, addressing the issues that concern them, and empowering them to be part of if not lead important dialogues. Because yes, the Miss FQ reader is fashion and beauty obsessed. She wants to know how to dress like her favourite style blogger, and which celebrities and influencers she should be following. But, she also asks, what constitutes influence anyway? A strong social media following, or effecting positive change on a global or local level? These are the conversations we love to have with our readers, and with four issues planned for 2018, our online and social platforms always on, and big things happening in the activation and experiential space, the conversation is about to get louder. I hope you will join us.

You ll be meeting plenty of new people whose names you might not remember RN, but whose first impressions of you are critical. If you ve been following my journey via my online video diaries, you ll know how amazing it has been. I m super fortunate to have been mentored by digital and associate editor Skye Ross, who has taught me the ins and outs of everything digital, social media and Miss FQ. After graduating from AUT with a degree in Communications majoring in advertising, I knew I wanted to work in the magazine world. I could not have asked for a better start to my career than interning at Miss FQ, thanks to Holden Spark. Major highlights include assisting in sourcing and styling looks for Fashion Quarterly and Miss FQ, writing Lip Service (page 88), and interviewing fashion designers Elle Hong of Ellis and Friends and Claudia Billinge of Sibed for MissFQ.co.nz. FYI, something to know about me is I love macarons and coffee! KEY TO MY HOLDEN SPARK BLACK HANDBAG THAT GOES WITH in case). A Kikki-K diary to record meetings, in case your email and digital diary isn t set up yet. EVERYTHING! COMFY & STYLISH HEELS MY FIRST DAY Prepping my outfit the night before saves me time in the morning for more important things like coffee! EARRINGS MADE BY MY FLATMATE BLACK & WHITE JUMPSUIT I was nervous getting ready for my big day but I chose an outfit that I felt confident in, and it made me feel way better. One coffee in and I had already had a full tour of Bauer Media, Miss FQ s parent company. Then it was time to meet the Miss FQ and Fashion Quarterly team. It was pretty nerve-wracking because everyone I have looked up to since forever was there. Imagine meeting the people you follow on Instagram IRL. Eep! In the afternoon, I had a meeting with Skye about the plans for this issue. I then took the Holden Spark out for a spin before heading home, tasked with brainstorming some online content ideas for the website. I spent the first morning of week two at several leading PR houses, picking up beauty products for the afternoon s shoot. FYI, the Spark is a zippy wee number and makes parking around the city a total breeze. Then I went behind the scenes at the photoshoot for Bloomin Beauty (page 87) and Lip Service (page 88). It was an eye-opening experience to see how the images are created so much work goes into making them perfect. Q&A WITH JESS WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST DAY AT FQ LIKE? It was very overwhelming and I was nervous but it was super exciting as I d literally found out I had the job three days before! FAVE THING ABOUT FQ HQ? Editorial and fashion assistant Jess Thomson and I jumped in the Spark and whizzed out to Sylvia Park to find some #trendy activewear. Back at Bauer, we pre-styled everything for the following day and loaded the outfits, shoes and accessories into the Spark. At 8am the next morning we photographed Fit for Purpose (page 66) up at Auckland s K Road. I was a proper stylist s assistant, you guys, and boy it was full on! An ensemble I styled myself has made it into print (page 69). So exciting! DIGITAL & ASSOCIATE EDITOR THE WRAP. Choosing the best image #Ididthat Unpacking beauty samples #beautyhaul On a fashion shoot #styleassistant Spark sing-a-long #bestplaylist Packing up the Spark #somanyclothes Gypsy Caravan sendoff #flamingcheese I spent week four in the office alongside the team, honing my digital skills. Skye taught me how to craft, format and publish articles for the website, and she gave me some tips and tricks on interview etiquette. I was lucky enough to conduct a few interviews on my own for the online Girl You Need to Know series, after Skye gave my questions a once-over. Visit MissFQ.co.nz to read my Q&As with owner of Ellis and Friends online boutique, Ellis Hong, and fashion designer Claudia Billinge of Sibed. I also attended some top-level meetings regarding upcoming Miss FQ events and campaigns. There are so many cool things to come ladies, you are going to love it all! Working at Miss FQ has truly been a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I m super grateful to the lovely team who have taught me so much during my time here. On my last day, the team treated me to frosé and nibbles at Gypsy Caravan in Ponsonby, which was so sweet! I don t want my internship to be over *crying emoji*, but I m super proud to say I ve been offered a job in Bauer Media s digital advertising department! At least I ll still see Skye and the team around the building. If interning sounds like a bit of you, email hello@missfq.nz with your CV and a passionate cover letter. Good things come to those who hustle! HOLDEN SPARK, MY PERFECT ACCESSORY This baby s zippy acceleration has been ideal for nipping between fashion stockists. I can easily pop down the back seats (no Tetris skills required) to reveal a spacious interior fit to hold a whole fashion shoot s worth of clothes and props. And the Holden has definitely delivered on fuel economy and easy phone connectivity too! Miss FQ in one sentence... For millennials, by millennials. How did you get started in Bauer and at Miss FQ? I began as an intern (like Ashleigh), working for Home magazine and Your Home & Garden magazine. From there, I was an editorial assistant at Cleo then Next and Good Health Choices before working on the launch of Miss FQ as the digital and associate editor. Favourite part of your job? I get to meet so many talented young women who work hard at their hustle they inspire me daily! I m so passionate about the Miss FQ voice we ve curated and I m proud to work for a brand that shares positive and empowering content. What goes through your head when choosing an outfit in the morning? Can I take this from the office, to a client meeting, to an Insta-worthy photographed event? I check my calendar every morning before I leave for work, but the world of media is hella spontaneous so I have to be prepared! What are your swear-by beauty products? Trilogy Everything Balm, $27.99 Benefit Roller Lash, $22 Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo, $72 MAC Lipstick in Lady Danger, $40 ASSOCIATE EDITOR HOW TO LAND A JOB STAND OUT WITH THESE TIPS FROM PHOEBE WATT Perfect your CV. It sounds obvious but thorough proof-reading and clear, consistent and professional formatting goes such a long way. And speaking of professional, don t include a photo unless specifically asked in which case, keep the RSA-pour of rosé out of the shot. Tailor your cover letter to the job you are applying for. Templates can be a useful starting point but it says nothing (or everything?) about you if it s obvious that all you ve done is dropped the company s name into your greeting. If it s a job you really want, it shouldn t be that hard for you to think about why. Say you re applying for a job at Miss FQ. Mentioning a shoot or piece of content that truly resonated with you will get you so much further than a generic statement about it being an exciting title at the forefront of fashion and not just because we love hearing good things about ourselves.
