About the Comoser Parker Gaims is a Washington DC-based clarinetist and comoser As a clarinetist, he has erormed at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Wol Tra, Strathmore, White House and other venues throughout the DC metroolitan area Beore living in DC, Mr Gaims had erormed ith the Chicago Chamber Musicians and served as the Bass Clarinet Teaching Assistant at the Brevard Music Festival in North Carolina Mr Gaims received his Bachelor o Music in clarinet erormance rom DePaul University in Chicago in 0 and his Master o Music, also in clarinet erormance, rom Northestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 0 Mr Gaims has been a clarinetist in The President s On United States Marine Band since Setember 0 Mr Gaims comositions have been erormed by the Northestern University Symhonic Wind Ensemble, DePaul University Wind Symhony, Northestern Clarinet Faculty, DePaul Clarinet Faculty, ianist Winston Choi, and members o every DC service band To recent orks ere remiered at the 06 International Clarinet Association conerence in Larence, Kansas, one o hich eatured members o the Chicago, Atlanta, Minnesota, Indianaolis, Orlando, and Detroit Symhony Orchestras He on the Kleinman Comosition Cometition in 00 Mr Gaims clarinet teachers include Steven Cohen, ulie DeRoche, Larry Combs, Larie Bloom, Wagner Camos, and Geo Nudell While at DePaul, Mr Gaims studied comosition ith Drs Kurt Westerberg and Fredrick Giord Mr Gaims is a native o Los Angeles, Caliornia Neither The President s On United States Marine Band, the US Marine Cors nor any other comonent o the Deartment o Deense or the US Government has endorsed this material
About the Comosition Wildcat March as comosed in late 0, ust over a year ater I oined the United States Marine Band as a clarinetist I alays loved marches, but in my ne osition, I could not escae the music o ohn Phili Sousa I constantly ound mysel humming marches hile alking through Caitol Hill Ater a short time, I comosed my on march, Seventh Street March (named ater the street on hich the Marine Barracks Annex is located) I sent the iece to Dr Mallory Thomson, the Director o Bands at Northestern University, and she exressed interest in another original march ritten in honor o the oening o the Ryan Center or Musical Arts, the university s neest building I as ecstatic to have the oortunity to rite or Northestern s Symhonic Wind Ensemble (SWE) The iece as remiered on November, 05 by Dr Thomson and SWE in Pick Staiger Concert Hall at Northestern I attemted to cature the dignity and ride o Northestern and SWE throughout Wildcat March The introduction and irst to strains o the iece contain long and grand celebratory melodies The Trio theme is a ull statement o Northestern s alma mater, Quacumque sunt vera ( Whatsoever things are true ) This music is also amously St Anthony s Chorale, hich is commonly attributed to Haydn The breakstrain contains dramatic chromatic material and several tutti unison moments The second time the Trio theme is heard, the euhoniums, saxohones, and horns have the melody hile the clarinet section lays an elaborate obbligato During this strain, the har and the remainder o the ind section rovide additional ornamentation The trumets and trombones lead the march s inal grandioso Trio strain hile the inds lay an exciting unison obbligato I comleted my Masters degree in clarinet erormance at Northestern University in 0 The to years I sent at Northestern encomassed some o the greatest learning exeriences o my lie My rincial teacher Steve Cohen not only ushed my clarinet laying to a higher level, but served as an invaluable mentor and advisor I have dee resect or him as a erson and musician I also had the good ortune o erorming in SWE ith Dr Thomson SWE is secial, rimarily because o Dr Thomson Her intense and inectious artistic sirit instantly aects everyone in the ensemble and audience Each erormance is emotionally stirring and shocases the amazing camaraderie o the ensemble It as a tremendous honor to receive this commission rom Dr Thomson Uon oining the Marine Band, I ound a kindred sirit in my colleague Ryan Nolin He is currently an assistant director o the organization, but reviously served as its sta arranger I ould like to thank him or his guidance and mentorshi, and or alays lending an ear to my ork I am deely grateul or the knoledge he has imarted to me
