AGENDA Changes in media landscape, consumer expectations and impact to production Paradigm change ahead Joint EBU, SMPTE, VSF Task Force Summing up

Mobile online applica=ons (e.g: podcasts, VoD,etc.) with iphone, ipad, ipod: Home network Internet- Radio Visual Radio UHDTV HbbTV DAB, DAB+ Connected TV Broadband & TV combine Streamers

EXPECTATIONS - QUALITY Top Content 3+ years we need accept 4K or UHD Hype Large screen experience Social gathering Lay back

EXPECTATIONS BIG SCREEN MORE THAN ONE PICTURE Benefit the large size and resolution Multi-viewing Zoom Allow the viewer to have the choice

EXPECTATION VIEWER TAKES CONTROL Broadband and HBBTV allow new applications Multi-camera Background information Apps New generation of interactivity will be defined

EXPECTATIONS SPEED OF INFORMATION New consumer devices create new demands I want to know first, Second screen is first in hand With rich visualized data Content must be targeted to the consumer platform

EXPECTATIONS RICHER CONTENT DATA Visualisation Knowledge to create data Ownership Exploitation of data Making attractive Content out of data Trust of information? Source: h+p://www.performancemagazine.org/

SIGNIFICANT IMPACT FOR BROADCASTERS Expanded concepts for crossmedia and content 1to1,1toGroups and 1to many Agnostic infrastructures Faster and better story centric workflow Platforms instead of pillars Costs?

PARADIGM SHIFT AHEAD After the transition to file based production with drastic changes we face the next disruptive change Move towards the all IP networked broadcaster Transformation of the whole industry in next few years More consolidation and new players

DIFFERENT THINKING! SDI Circuit switched Fixed route Fixed/Guaranteed bandwidth IT/IP Packet switched Dynamic route (per packet) Best effort / Prioritization 1 cable = 1 signal, point to point 1 cable = many signals, any to any Synchronous Real-time (on time, in order, low latency) Zero errors (BER < 10E-14) Easy bandwidth management VBI Switching Asynchronous Non-real time (latency vs jitter and reordering) Error management: Retransmission, FEC, etc. Bandwidth Management Complex Packet Switch

WATCH OUT: DO YOU HAVE THE SKILL SET? Networked Media Architects (you don t find this at universities) IP skills and a sound media fundamental base know how Creatives must become the friends of APPs, Internet and New Media Devices Innovation occurs when you have skills and a test environment and time to play

SUMMARY Any new investment project for the coming years need to face the question SDI or IP, also for real time The trend is clearly IP, virtualization, services, IaaS Replacing SDI is a short term approach. Encapsulation of SDI in IP is short term solution. Build networked media architecture skills today, Start experimenting, bridge the gap between advanced technology and creatives, innovate on new workflows The change is huge, and will impact the organisation
