... 2... SECTION - A (eading) (20 arks) Q.1. ead the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it : [8] 1. All sports people are under a lot of pressure to win. When they win or do well, they feel excited and extremely happy. But when things go bad, they feel depressed s and anxious. This s is why athletes have s to be mentally strong. s In the past, athletes s were only trained to get physically t, but today, professional sports psychologists use scienti techniques to help athletes get mentally t too. 2. England rugby player Johnny Wilkinson describes some of the pressures he has felt. Wilkinson played brilliantly at the ugby World Cup in 2003. But after that things started to go wrong, Wilkinson understood that he had a terrible fear of failure. He read lots of books to try to understand how to solve the problem. He found the answer in books on Quantum Physics. Wilkinson said: Quantum Physics tells us that reality changes depending on how we look at it. This made me understand that I was making my own problems. I could solve my problems if I looked at reality differently. In team sports such as football, psychologists help players in different ways. One of the psychologist s jobs is to create a team spirit. This can be very dif cult because teams are composed of people with different personalities. Professor Dave Collins is a sports psychologist. He says: A team is like a monster with 11 heads. When there is a team spirit, the players help one another. They all take responsibility when things go badly. They do not blame individual players for mistakes. In this way, each player feels more con dent and he can concentrate better. 3. Today, sports psychologists have an important job to do. They help athletes become mentally t and develop a winning mentality. Having a winning mentality can make the difference between winning and losing. 1.1 Attempt any EIGHT of the following questions on the basis of the passage you have read : [1 8 = 8] i. Why do the athletes need to be mentally strong? ii. iii. iv. Who is Johnny Wilkinson? How did Wilkinson try to solve his problems? A team is like a monster with 11 heads, Explain. v. To unburden yourself. To get rid of yesterday s hurt. Be glad of life each day as it gives you a chance to work, love and play; to look at the sun. And then when sun sets, don t cry the tears will make you miss the beauty of the stars. 2. Life moves on and if you don t stop and look at the wonders already present in your life, you will miss life altogether. 3. Think of big thoughts but relish the small joys life offers you each day. aybe it s as simple as smiling at someone. For that could be the last day of life for you or for her. 4. A small genuine act from you will cost you nothing but it could mean everything to somebody that day. Life is a succession of moments. Live each moment. Life has no romance without risk. Any action carries some amount of risk, may be less or more, but the element of risk is always present. 5. If there is no wind, row. ake things happen rather than let things happen. One can give nothing whatsoever without giving oneself, risking oneself. The most important thing in life is not what you get but what you give. If you are not enjoying this journey, for sure you won t enjoy the destination. It will become a moment to dread, not a moment you can actually look forward to. It s not what happens that determines our future, but what you do about what happens that counts. 6. Conquer the mind and you conquer the world! Looking back strains your neck muscles. Similarly, living in the past strains your life. Don t dwell on the past, have faith in yourself and you will have faith in others. Ful ll your destiny. emember, no one can make you unhappy without your consent. 7. The way you cope with life is what makes the difference. Even peace of mind is not the absence of con ict but the ability to cope with it. You have to reach out to other people. That will teach you to forgive people and also forgive yourself. 8.
