Message from the Artistic and Executive Director on behalf of the President, Chairman, and Board of Directors Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festivals Society (VKMFS) Welcome to the 96th year of Inspiring Musical Excellence! Congratulations to everyone involved for their accomplishments and commitment. The results of many hours of dedicated practice, discipline, and focus will be showcased by the performers and leaders at this year s Choral Festival. Our 2019 adjudicators are Mr. Robert Filion, Dr. Danica Hoffart, and Ms. Erica Phare-Bergh. They will provide valuable feedback, wisdom, and encouragement to nearly 1800 singers. We invite you to read more about our adjudicators lifelong devotion to music education in the following pages of your program book. The supporters and partners of the VKMFS have created important platforms needed to provide our youth with meaningful opportunities to advance their musical knowledge and abilities. The continuing goal is to inspire the next generation of students to make music and be involved in the community. We acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festivals Philosophy To provide a festival that is student and director oriented; To operate a festival that is musically and educationally focused; To provide an environment and atmosphere for an exchange of music performance, listening, sharing and working together; To provide excellent performance examples which groups may strive to emulate. Process and Evaluation Each group will perform repertoire of the director s choice, performing a maximum of three selections. Music should represent the level and abilities of the group and should reflect the process of quality music education. All groups will be performing to a standard of excellence. A detailed descriptor evaluation sheet shall be used by the adjudicators to indicate the group s performance. Each group will receive a certificate of performance/participation. Each group will receive a taped/written evaluation and a clinic with one of the adjudicators. Adjudicators Robert Filion Robert Filion has spent the past 20 years bringing choirs to the pinnacle of choral excellence. Recognized across Canada, his choirs earn top awards at local, provincial and national levels. His vocal ensembles from École secondaire De La Salle have won six national championships. Robert Filion s choirs are heard and seen regularly on the airwaves of CBC and Radio-Canada. The voice programme he heads in the performing arts stream at École secondaire De La Salle was designated Best Music Programme in the National Capital by the Kiwanis Music Festival and CBC three times (2008, 2012 and 2017). A talented musician and artistic director, in 2011 Robert Filion was appointed Artistic Director of Unisong, the annual Canada Day festival of Canadian choirs at the National Arts Centre. He works with the National Arts Centre Orchestra on concerts involving youth choirs. He focuses on new works and music from around the world, directing the Canadian productions of the Clifford Crawley opera, Angel Square, Glenn McClure s Messe des Caraïbes, Missa Tango by Luis Bacalov and Missa Popularis by Claus Bantzer. He has collaborated on productions of original Canadian works by, among others, Ruth Watson-Henderson, Laura Hawley, Kelly-Marie Murphy, Stephen Hatfield, Donald Patriquin, Frédéric Lacroix and Clifford Crawley. Robert Filion likes to surprise his audiences, and offer them the experience of all kinds of music. Robert Filion directed the Choeur classique de l Outaouais from 1997 to 2011, when it earned the prestigious Liette Turner award. Under his direction between 2002 and 2007, the Ottawa Children s Choir won the international Angel Network prize for the Radio-Canada/CBC broadcast Evergreen Wishes. In 2013 he was awarded the Prime Minister s Award for Teaching Excellence. Robert Filion holds an Ontario Teaching Certificate and is a member of the Association of Canadian Choral Communities, the American Choral Directors Association, and is a member of the Board of Choirs Ontario. Danica Hoffart Dr. Danica Hoffart is a singer, conductor, musical director, educator, and adjudicator. She is currently a voice instructor in Theatre Arts at MacEwan University. Prior to that, she was on faculty at Red Deer College where she taught private voice lessons, singing for the stage, music history, ear training, and directed the Chamber Choir. Last year, Danica was a presenter at both Choral Canada s biennial Podium conference and at the International Symposium of Singing and Song. Danica holds a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Arts in Music from the University of Alberta, and a PhD in Music from the University of Calgary. Erica Phare-Bergh Erica Phare-Bergh obtained her M. Mus. in Choral Conducting from McGill University. A native of Montreal, Phare-Bergh formerly conducted the Vanier College Choirs and the McGill Conservatory Choirs. In Calgary, she directed the William Aberhart High School Choirs, Westwinds Green Choir, and the Savridi Singers. She is in demand as an adjudicator, workshop leader and presenter (ChoralFest, MCA, Podium, BCCF) and was the guest conductor for the 10th anniversary of the CBC-McGill Youth Gala. In 2008, she spearheaded the Montreal première of Oratorio Terezin, a large-scale work involving 270 performers at Place-des-Art. She and her husband, Rick, live in Victoria, BC. Together, they write children s books (A Song with Every Story series) in which Erica incorporates both original songs and classical music into children s stories. She has numerous arrangements published with Cypress Choral Music and currently directs three Voices in Motion choirs multigenerational research choirs for people withalzheimer s, their caregivers and high school students. 8 VANCOUVER KIWANIS MUSIC FESTIVALS CHORAL FESTIVAL 2019
