he legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder is as integral a part of Jazz history as any of the musicians who created the music. As the go-to engineer for Blue Note, Prestige, and Impulse in the 1950s and 60s, Van Gelder made clean, crisp, and meticulously well-balanced recordings from his home studio in Hackensack and later in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, contributing to classic after classic. Jazz became apart of the dominant culture and an emblem of America. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 03

Rudy Van Gelder is responsible for the famous Blue Note sound, having recorded almost every session from 1953 to 1971 in his New Jersey studios. Fascinated with radio, sound, and electronics from an early age, Rudy Van Gelder was a self-taught audio engineer who was also operating his own optometry practice when a Gil Melle session he d recorded caught the ear of Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff. For the Record is not only a towering achievement in Jazz, but it chronicles a milestone in American Culture. Tom Shafer, The Deadcat Jazz Reader www.bluenote.com By 1953, Blue Note began recording at Rudy s living room in Hackensack. Many independent New York jazz labels soon followed suit. Van Gelder brought the art of jazz recording to a new level, capturing the full sound and power of the musicians with revealing clarity. This series is a tribute to his artistry as much as to the music. With 24-bit technology, Rudy has transferred and remastered classic Blue Note albums of the Fifties and Sixties.
