Phil in May 2014, Béla Fleck made an off-hand comment to Morihiko about composing a second. Just two years later, Béla returns to debut the Juno Concerto (named after his son), which the S.C. Phil co-commissioned with the Canton (Ohio) Symphony, Colorado Symphony, and Louisville (Ky.) Orchestra. And you helped make it happen. Community Engagement music for a cause Music for a Cause provides support for many of the Midlands non-profits. This program partners with local human service charities for each of the Masterworks concerts. The charities are provided tickets to sell as a fundraiser and numerous marketing opportunities to promote their mission to S.C. Phil audiences. This program also gives us an opportunity to reach supporters of these outstanding organizations, many of whom have never attended an S.C. Phil concert. 20 outreach The six charities this season are: Harvest Hope lighthouse for life Historic columbia Palmetto place foundation Children s shelter home works of america Red White & babies conduct the phil Conduct the Phil makes the flash mob experience interactive putting a professional orchestra at community events where the Midlands gathers to let you conduct. It connects around 100,000 people with the S.C. Phil, and each other, through a unique, shared experience. Funded by a Connected Communities grant from the Central Carolina Community Foundation. kids-to-concerts Provides complimentary tickets to underserved/at-risk students so that they and their families can experience live, symphonic music. healing harmonies This venture lets generous, caring members of the community place S.C. Phil musicians in area healthcare facilities to soothe the soul while the body mends. Ensembles of S.C. Phil musicians go into a facility to present an upbeat, hour-long performance of classical and contemporary favorites. educational programs The S.C. Phil emphasizes the educational component of its mission and believes strongly that exposing young people to the arts is an essential element in helping them realize their full potential. Link Up concerts: The Orchestra moves! This interactive, Carnegie Hall Weill Music Institute program provides students in grades 3-5 the opportunity to learn about music by connecting, and performing, with the S.C. Phil during live concerts at the Koger Center for the Arts coming Feb. 6-8, 2017. Registration opens in spring 2016! S.C. Philharmonic Youth Orchestras Founded in 1964, the Youth Orchestras program offers an opportunity for string, wind, brass, and percussion players from across the Midlands to rehearse and perform together in our three youth orchestras: the String Orchestra (age 8 and up), Repertory Orchestra (grades 7-12/intermediate full symphony), and Youth Orchestra (grades 9-12/ advanced full symphony). The orchestras perform three concerts at the Koger Center. Adopt-A-Musician S.C. Phil musicians are adopted by classrooms in schools throughout the Midlands! Students get the opportunity to get to know their musician through performance and classroom interaction. Aesops Fables & Carnival of the Animals Unique educational concerts in the schools.
