ohnny Coell (b.1926) is regarded as one o Canada s most outstanding trumpet soloists. He has been the eatured soloist ith many o Canada s symphony orchestras and appeared as trumpet soloist ith the Toronto Symphony regularly over many years. ohn has received outstanding revies hen he has appeared as soloist ith America s King o ops Erich Kunzel, ho has reerred to ohn as a rare combination o Wynton Marsalis, Maurice Andre and Gerard Scharz ith a bit o Harry ames thron in or good measure. ohn ed his irst trumpet solo at the age o six and at iteen became the youngest member and soloist o the amous Toronto Symphony Band hich presented a eekly series o broadcasts over CBC Radio. At age sixteen, he ed his irst engagement ith the Toronto Symphony. During the ar years he as a soloist ith the Royal Canadian Navy Band as ell as irst trumpet ith the Victoria Symphony Orchestra. He became interested in riting music at an early age and olloing his discharge rom the Navy Band, as aarded a scholarship in composition rom the Royal Conservatory. One o Canada s best knon commercial composers, ohn has had more than 100 o his songs recorded. To o these have become international standards placing #1 on the hit parade: Walk Hand in Hand in 1956 and Our Winter Love in 196. His songs have been recorded by an impressive list o entertainers including Dame Vera Lynn, Harry Secombe, Andy Williams, Chet Atkins, Larence Welk, Tony Martin, Anita Bryant, The Lettermen, Gerry The acemakers, 101 Strings, Nashville Strings as ell as Bill urcell and others too numerous to mention.
