Competition Guidelines 2018-2019 What is the Shake It Up competition? We invite music teachers to submit their own unique instrumental and choral printed arrangements. The winner will receive 700 and two runners up will receive 400 each for their schools music departments! Supported by:

Am I eligible? Any music teacher engaged in supporting music education at a licensed school can enter, whether you re full-time, a peripatetic teacher, or you re based at a local Music Hub or Instrumental Service. As long as the arrangement was made under the Terms and Conditions of the Schools Printed Music Licence, you re eligible! The school that you are making the arrangement for must be covered by the Licence. The includes all state-maintained schools in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland due to central licensing agreements. State-maintained schools in Wales can either see if they re covered on cla.co.uk/spml or check with their Local Authority. Independent schools may be covered; you should talk to your finance officer or bursar to find out. What do I need to enter? To enter, you need to submit an instrumental or choral arrangement of a piece of/from a printed music publication that you created for a distinct school purpose. This can be hand written or entered into notation software. Note that original pieces are not submissable. A distinct school purpose includes a timetabled music lesson, for a school orchestra, or other school activities. As the arrangement will have been made for the benefit of your students, it should be something you can use/practice with students. Winning entries will be asked to provide a performance of the arrangements. To enter, you should download and complete the entry form along with your submission. This includes a written account of why you made the arrangement and why you feel it is important to give students printed music. This should be no more than 250 words and will be taken into consideration during the judging process. The deadline for submissions is Monday 6 th May 2019. There will also be an awards ceremony in July, date to be confirmed.

You may submit as many arrangements as you like, but please note that only one entry per person can be awarded a prize. Entries should not have already been submitted to a previous Shake It Up competition. How can I submit my entry and how will it be judged? You should submit the printed music arrangement and entry form together. You can enter by: Post (note that originals will not be returned): Email: Shake It Up competition Copyright Licensing Agency 5th Floor, Shackleton House 4 Battlebridge Lane London, SE1 2HX shakeitup@cla.co.uk When we receive your entry, we will use the contact details on your entry form to confirm your submission and let you know if there is anything else you need to do. Entries will be judged by a panel of judges, including independent music specialists. We will first announce six shortlisted entrants. The judging criteria will be as follows: The arranging skills demonstrated The degree to which the arrangement meets the needs of the students in question The music resources available at the school The degree of sympathy shown with the original composition

What happens if I am on the shortlist? The six shortlisted entrants will be asked to provide an audio (or audio-visual) recording of your students performing the arrangement. These will then be judged in conjunction with the arrangement itself and written account on the entry form. After this, a winner and two runners up will be decided upon. All entrants will be invited to the awards ceremony. The shortlisted entries will be played for the audience and the winners will be announced. Two runners up will receive 400 each and the winner will receive 700 for their schools music departments. Important Terms and Conditions All submitted arrangements must comply with the Terms and Conditions of the Schools Printed Music Licence (SPML). In the case of a conflict between documents, the Licence prevails. The school will retain the right to use and show the arrangement and any subsequent recording of the performance of the arrangement, within the school. For clarity, permission to use, copy or upload these to public-facing media, or to perform to the general public, is subject to the usual appropriate licences. If your entry is shortlisted, your name, school, and title of the entry will be used during promotional activities related to SPML and Shake It Up. We reserve the right to use photos taken during the awards ceremony for SPML marketing purposes, including to promote this and future Shake It Up competitions. If you do not want your image to be used in this manner, please inform us before the start of the awards ceremony. The decision of our judging panel is final.
