I chose this theme because I think that juxtaposition can really help your creativity flow, it s a very broad topic that doesn t have many boundaries. Juxtaposition can produce many deep meanings and themes within the art piece and can emphazise specific concepts, which I am really drawn into. I want to create an art piece that is simple, but I want to add a lot of meaning to make the audience think, or just have a broader meaning that anyone can interpret in their own way. However, I think that ll be more difficult. Not only that, juxtaposition is something very new to me. Throughout this year and previous years we have never really talked about it or tried any artwork in that field, so I think it would be very interesting to try out as my final project. When I first heard about juxtaposition, I merely thought that it was a way to show contrast and in a way, it is. When I started researching about it, I found out more about how it is used to convey different concepts and a lot of deep meaning that words cannot express through both simplicity and complexity. I also used to think it was only about two ideas having to be different, but there are many different types of juxtaposition, including size, technique and color. For my final art work, I would love to try to create something quite simple, but I also want my art piece to convey a lot of meaning. I want to add something that can make the audience think and that there are multiple ways to that someone could analyze/interpret my final piece of artwork

// Artist 1: René Magritte // SCREEN 2: Research and Recreate He was born in Belgium in 1898. He began painting in the mid 1920s in a surrealist style. He was known for his use of simple, everyday objects and his witty/ thought deep images. He incorporated a lot of themes of mystery and madness.he was inspired a lot by the works of Jean Metzinger and Fernand Leger, especially on his early work. You can see them in his artworks where he experimented with Cubism, such as Bather. This art piece is called The Son of Man, and it was a made in 1946. The medium s oil on canvas. This is a painting of a man in an overcoat and bowler hat. His face is largely covered by a hovering green apple. This art piece is fairly simple, it shows a lot of simplicity, yet complexity at the same time. In terms of color, the color pallet is fairly dull, making it seem very gloomy, like there is a storm, or that is right before a storm. The overall tone of this art piece seems very mysterious and not very pleasant. The man is wearing a very dark coloured trench coat, which adds to the tone. There is not much detail on the background, in contrast to the detailed man, which in turn places the focus on the man. In terms of balance, this art piece seems very balanced. // Artist 2: Mister Blick // A French artist/filmmaker who goes by the name Mister Blick. He was born in 1971. Since he is anonymous, there is not much information about him. However, he is known for taking found black and white photography and replacing the guns or other weapons with colourful flowers. Images could be of men at war, but holding flowers in the place of guns. The picture that I have chosen is a black and white picture of 4 soldiers hauling something up, but instead it is replaced with a colourful blossoming pink flower. This picture definitely shows war vs. peace, because this picture is a war picture, but flowers are known as a peaceful symbol. I think his clever way of using color in this art piece adds to the theme of war vs. peace. The entire picture is black and white, except for the flower, which looks to be thriving and blossoming. For me, this shows that (the flower = peace) there is hope in peace, and that war is not the only way, or is not the most effective way. Since there is color only on the flower and the background is fairly simple, it adds emphasis and focus onto the flower. I think in a way, the artist added movement. // Materials // - A3 Paper - Pencil - Eraser - Prisma markers - Colored pencils - Thin sharpie SCREEN 4: Final Work Process // Day 3 // On the third day, I started to color in my drawing with prisma markers. In my composition, I said that this drawing would be black and white except for certain parts in the drawing, however, I decided to color the entire thing. I think that it was really challenging to color in with prisma markers because it would leave weird lines and it could be hard to blend out. This caused me to be extremely careful while colouring in with these markers. // Day 1 // This first day, I was looking up side profiles of people so I could have a reference when I draw. This day I basically started outlining my art piece, figuring out the placement of my person and her hand. I think that drawing out the proportions of her hand compared to her face, as well as the spacing and positioning of her facial features were hard to draw, and took me a really long time draw until I was satisfied. // Day 2 // The next day, I started to draw in my art piece more clearly. I drew clear borders and lines and erased the light pencil marks throughout my entire drawing. I also added some shadows and shading, providing some definition for the face. I also started drawing in the hair, stroke by stroke. Something challenging that I faced was when I was drawing in the hair, I had to do it stroke by stroke, as well as in the same direction, which made it even more difficult.

// Day 4 // On the fourth day, I used coloured pencils and went over my entire drawing because I felt like it looked slightly dull and coloured pencils have a wider range of colors. I also decided to take a risk I did some contour line drawing over the girl to give it more distorted and unusual tone. Lastly, I outlined my entire drawing with a thin sharpie. Something challenging that I faced was that it was difficult to create highlights in the hair. I had to figure out where the light and dark areas of the hair was, but I also didn t want to create extreme stripes in the hair. // Day 5 // On the last day, I made small finishing touches onto my drawing. I added more shading and I added some dark blue into the hair. I also outlined again with a thin sharpie. I don t think that there was anything challenging that I faced this day, but I learned how adding different coloured highlights into the hair can drastically change the look of the hair.

SCREEN 5: Reflection and Evaluation The title of my final artwork is Beauty is Pain, which I think many people have heard before. I heard this a lot when I was young and now I know more about why beauty is pain. Some women go through a lot in order to be deemed pretty, or beautiful, by society. Many people get made fun of because they don t look a certain way or they lack something. And they change their natural beauty that they were born with in order to be called pretty by others. I named this piece Beauty is Pain, because I think it represents my art piece quite well. What you see on the outside could be just someone really pretty applying on lipstick, but in reality they could have changed some aspect of their facial features in order to achieve their desired looks, and some can involve painful methods such as lip injections or even plastic surgery. I made this artwork quite simply. I first looked up side profiles as a reference and sketched out the base of the face of the girl and her hand. I then made those lines more defined and added some shading. Next, I coloured in the hand/arm, neck and face with prisma markers to add a base color. Then, I went over with coloured pencils and defined the shadows on the girls face more and overall added just another layer of color. I then did some contour line drawing over the girl s face based on her highlights and contours to give it an unusual, mapped out feeling. Lastly, I outlined with sharpie. My artwork looks really simple. There is a side profile of a black haired girl with bright red lips at the bottom right corner of the paper facing left. She is holding up her hand in front of her face while she is holding a black tube of Dior lipstick. But instead of there being lipstick on the inside of the lipstick tube, there is a transparent syringe/needle. On her face and arm/hand, there is contour line drawings, marking where her highlights and contours are. The EoA that I used were line, color and value. Line can be seen when I did contour line drawing on the girls face. I did this to create a feeling as if her faced is being mapped and to kind of direct the audiences eyes when they look at my artwork. I also demonstrate line in the girls hair. I drew many many strokes in the girls hair individually and in the same direction to make it look realistic and very wispy and soft. In some areas I drew darker and lighter lines to create natural looking highlights in the girl s hair. Although it is very little, color can be shown when I made the girl s lips and her nails an extreme bright red. I did this on purpose to draw attention to it, so the viewer would notice the syringe in her hands as well as her lips (hopefully making a connection.) This is why the rest of the colors in the art piece are more dull and very light. Lastly, value can be seen in the girl s hair color and the background. I decided to keep the background white, but I decided to make her hair black so it would provide a striking contrast. Most of the drawing was very dull already, so I wanted to add more contrast to also direct the viewer. The PoA that I used in this artwork were balance and movement. Balance can be seen in how much I left blank in my drawing. My goal was to make this final artwork really simple, but to also send a message, so the balance of the foreground and background was extremely important. I personally think having a lot of blank space around my artwork gave it a simple vibe, which I really liked. Lastly, I used movement in the hair. I purposely created the hair to be very flowy and wispy, to show as if her hair is always flowing moving. I think the artwork would be very still without the hair, and I also think it helps guide the viewer s eyes. I think that my idea stayed pretty consistent throughout this project. However, I did make some changes. The first thing that I changed was that I decided to add more color, my idea before was to just have my entire artwork be black and white. I added color because I don t want it to be too simple, and I think you can express a lot with color. The second change that I made was that I added contour line drawing on the girl. I did this because I think it further contributes to my theme of beauty is pain, because in doing so, it looks like the girls face is mapped out. I think my inspiration came from makeup itself. When I was trying to find ideas for this project, I knew I wanted to juxtapose a common object. One day I was looking around my house for inspiration, and I suddenly came across my mother s collection of lipstick. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to incorporate something regarding lipstick or makeup in general. Some connections that I made were with the pose the girl was in. Whenever I see people applying lipstick, they make this exact pose before applying. I guess that was what I was going for as well to make it look like it was something seemly normal that she or women in general go through. I think the biggest risk I took in this project was drawing a person. In all my previous art projects, I always draw animals or objects, because I don t think I m good at drawing people or making them look realistic. So this time I really tried to draw my best, and consider the right proportions and placements of facial features and her hand. This is actually one of the artworks that I really like, which I think is surprising. At the beginning, when I was starting to draw the girl, I thought that this wouldn t turn out the way that I wanted it to. However, as time wore on and this project was near completion, I actually really started to like it. I like it because I think I did a decent job of making her realistic, and I really like how I drew her hair and how I made it somewhat simple and pleasing to look at. I think that most challenging part in this entire project was drawing the girl especially her face. I think it was really difficult to draw the right proportions and making her look like she is calm. I really enjoyed colouring in my drawing, because I think that is what made a huge difference in my final art piece. I really enjoyed colouring in the hair and adding blue to it, because I have never really done or thought that before, so it was really exciting to try. If I could start again, I think I would draw the eye a little lower because I think I drew it too high, therefore making her face appear slightly long. However, I think there is not much that I would want to change besides that! I actually think that this could be displayed on a white frame, so it can contribute to the simplicity of this artwork. Lastly, some comments that I received about this project when we were choosing which composition we would pursue, someone said that I could consider adding a makeup table in the background that contains more weapon-makeup objects. However, I think I disagree because I think it would make it look more messy and I think this simplicity in this artwork really harmonizes well together. We had another critique. Some of the comments that I received was a lot questions about why I did certain things such as contour line drawing and how I drew the hair.
