A Basic Aristotle Glossary

Music A Powerful Soul-ution Hearing is our most dominant sense and the first one developed in utero. Babies exposed to music before they are born are better at reading, math, language, motor skills, and cognitive skills. Studies show that people who dine listening to Beautiful music avoid emotional eating and digest their food better and can actually lose weight. Silence enhances pain and emotional distress. Music provides emotional buoyancy that acts as a deterrent from the pain. Pythagoras 600 B.C. Music is math. Harmonic Ratios 1

"Music directly imitates the passions or states of the soul... when one listens to music that imitates a certain passion, he becomes imbued with the same passion; and if over a long time he habitually listens to music that rouses ignoble passions, his whole character will be shaped to an ignoble form." ~ Aristotle Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything; It is the essence of order and lends to all that is good, just, and beautiful. ~ Plato Musical training is a more potent instrument than any other, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul. ~ Socrates 3 Types of Music Musica Humana Musica Instrumentali Musica Mundana 2

Brain waves, heart rhythms, blood pressure, organic rhythms, and emotional tone can subtly change according to the music we listen to. When deeply relaxed the brain releases beta-endorphins. When used for relaxation and stress, music can be used to discharge deeply locked in material. Real harmony depends on caring for the patient with compassion. Music can act as a powerful bonding agent. 3

Memory is always preserved but not easy to retrieve. Music holds the key to memory retrieval. For instance singing old familiar songs with loved ones who have Alzheimer s is a wonderful way to communicate. Music allows patients to re-connect with themselves. Henry Dryer 4

E-motion = energy + motion An ambulance ride would be more compassionate if the patient was listening therapeutic music on headphones. It would stabilize breathing and lessen the shock of emergency from listening to the siren. 5

Qualities of Healing Music to provide a healing, stress-free environment. It is the transparency, the arches and rhythms between the open space that so profoundly stir the human spirit. ~ The Mozart Effect 1. Transparency no vocals 2. Simple and serene less is more avoid drums or lots of brass. Flutes, piano and stringed instruments work best. 3. A flowing rhythm a pulse of 60 times within a minute with a flow much like a stream. ie: Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven Why the piano? Piano music is excellent to listen to because it ranges from 27.5 to 4168 hertz. This is the measurement of vibration for each tone the bigger numbers being the higher tones. The high notes stimulate the mind, the middle tones the solar plexus and emotions. The low tones on the piano make us sleepy when played slowly and stimulate us to move when played fast. Spiritual Music 6
