塔利斯合唱團致辭 Message from Tallis Vocalis Dear friends, Tallis Vocalis takes great pride in bringing to Hong Kong the leading exponents of Renaissance polyphony, Stile Antico, in partnership with our co-presenter, Premiere Performances of Hong Kong. Personally, tonight marks another step in an interesting and productive musical relationship with Stile Antico. My first encounter with the ensemble was in 2010 at their Kings Place concert in London. Their enthralling performance inspired me to create Tallis Vocalis, the first group in Hong Kong dedicated to the performance of Renaissance vocal music. For Tallis Vocalis inaugural concert in 2014 we invited Andrew Griffiths, one of the founding members of Stile Antico, to be our guest conductor. Four years on, we are thrilled to welcome him back to Hong Kong together with the entire group to showcase some of the best Renaissance polyphony ever written. 飛躍演奏香港致辭 Message from Premiere Performances of Hong Kong Dear friends and music lovers, We are delighted to be collaborating for the first time with Tallis Vocalis to bring renowned early music ensemble Stile Antico to Hong Kong for their debut performance. Since 2009, Premiere Performances has been a pioneer in bringing chamber music to the audiences of Hong Kong. Just like chamber musicians, the twelve members of Stile Antico work together without a conductor, with no single dominant voice. So they are the perfect ensemble to be our very first choral concert. Stile Antico s performances are often praised for their immediacy, expressive commitment, and their sensitive and imaginative response to text. These qualities arise from the group s collaborative working style: members rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing artistically to the musical results. The group is also noted for its compelling programming, which often draws out thematic connections between works to shine new light on Renaissance music. In addition to its core repertoire, Stile Antico has premiered works by John McCabe, Huw Watkins, and, most recently, Nico Muhly, whose Gentle Sleep was written to mark the group s tenth birthday. As well as leading regular courses at the Dartington International Summer School, the group has been resident at Zenobia Música, and is often invited to work alongside ensembles at universities, festivals, and early music forums. 節目簡介 Programme Notes 今晚的音樂會集合若干我們鍾愛的曲目, 展示出文藝復興時期歐洲不同風格種類的合唱音樂 上半場的節目中, 來自英國的曲目佔據大半, 開篇與結尾的作品均為威廉 拜爾德 (c.1540 1623) 所寫的經文歌 拜爾德是英國最偉大的複調音樂作曲家, 他為信奉新教的英女皇伊利沙白一世服務, 在皇家禮拜堂中供職, 而他本人私底下卻是天主教社區的活躍成員 在伊利沙白一世治下, 天主教處於被查禁的狀態 割裂的忠誠因此成為拜爾德的創作特徵, 他的音樂時常間接表達對於天主教的支持 在當時頗具顛覆性的 聖歌曲集 (1589 年出版 ) 中, 再清楚不過地體現出來 今晚演唱的兩首拜爾德作品, 均出自這部曲集 兩首樂曲的歌詞雖取自聖經經文, 但對他那些受迫害的天主教友人卻有明顯的共鳴 在 警醒 中, 歌詞規勸真正懷有信仰的人留意天主的重臨, 祂將歸來審判一切 拜爾德施展渾身解數, 把公雞的鳴叫丶信仰者因失望而垂頭喪氣的模樣丶以及因天主忽然重臨而產生的驚詫, 以牧歌方式生動地呈現出來 耶和華, 求你不要大發震怒 是作曲家最令人讚歎的創作之一, 以苦痛與悲喜參半交纏的音樂, 哀悼被毀的耶路撒冷城以及流亡的以色列人, 亦是對當時天主教徒精神流亡的暗喻 Tonight s concert brings together some of our favourite works, and provides a fascinating window onto the different styles and genres of choral music in Renaissance Europe. English music predominates in the first half of our programme, which begins and ends with motets written by the greatest of all the English polyphonists, William Byrd (c.1540 1623). Byrd served the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal, but himself remained an active member of the undercover Catholic community, which was banned under her regime. This split loyalty characterised his career, and his music often expresses coded support for the Catholic cause never more clearly than in the subversive Cantiones sacrae publication of 1589, from which both of tonight s Byrd works are taken. Each has words which, whilst scrupulously Biblical, would have carried obvious resonance for his persecuted Catholic friends. In Vigilate, the text exhorts true believers to keep watch for the return of the master who will judge all; here Byrd pulls out all the stops, depicting the crowing of the cockerel, the drooping head of the lethargic believer, and the sudden panic at the unexpected return of the master, in vivid madrigalian fashion. Ne irascaris, Domine is one of Byrd s most sublime creations, lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of the Israelites (a common metaphor for the spiritual exile of the Catholics) in music alternately anguished and exquisitely bittersweet. 奧蘭多 紀邦斯 (1583 1625) 是拜爾德之後那一代英國作曲家中的佼佼者 他創作的 萬民哪, 你們都要鼓掌! 取材自 詩篇 第四十七篇 樂曲熱情洋溢, 且有著令人難以置信 Orlando Gibbons (1583 1625) was the leading English composer of the generation following Byrd. Convention dictated that in order to receive the doctorate, an 8-part composition be presented, but Heyther although a renowned singer was apparently no composer. That a genuine subterfuge occurred, however, is unlikely: it seems most probable that Heyther s DMus was an honorary degree, and Gibbons anthem served to fulfil a formality; Heyther later went on to endow the first chair in music at Oxford. Less familiar, though hardly less talented, is Robert Ramsey (c.1590 1644), who probably hailed from a family of Scottish court musicians who travelled to England with James VI of Scotland when he assumed the English throne as James I in 1603. Best-known amongst his relatively small output are the works he wrote in honour of James son, Henry, Prince of Wales, who had tragically died in 1612. The exceptionally fine madrigal Sleep, fleshly birth is one such work, showing a powerful and affecting mastery of harmony and rhetoric. Completing the first half of this evening s concert are two Continental settings of the beautiful Old Testament love poem, the Song of Songs one of the most often-set sources of motet texts in the Renaissance. The thrilling double-choir motet Veni, dilecte mi, by the Spaniard Sebastián de Vivanco (c.1551 1622), heralds the early baroque with its antiphonal writing indeed, one could easily envisage the piece performed with basso continuo, cornets and trombones. Vivanco brings out the sensual and worldlier qualities of the text, thrillingly conveying its heady excitement. Ego flos campi by the Flemish composer Jacob Clemens non Papa (c.1510 1555/6) is equally masterful, though far more chaste in character: here it is the static harmonies, never straying far 8

For Clemens, this text had a very particular association: he probably wrote his setting for the Marian Brotherhood in 's-hertogenbosch, where he worked briefly in 1550. The motto of the Brotherhood sicut lilium inter spinas appears as part of the text, and Clemens makes sure that it is given pride of place, sung three times in homophony at the centre of the piece. Continental composers were generally bettertravelled than their English counterparts, and Nicholas Gombert (c.1495 c.1560) was no exception; like many musicians from the Low Countries, he ended up working for the Spanish Royal Chapel. It is perhaps inevitable that the thing most often remembered about him is the most unsavoury that he was convicted of violating a young boy, and sent to the galleys. It is said that it was through his exceptional skills as a composer, demonstrated through his cycle of eight Magnificat settings, that he was able to earn his pardon from Emperor Charles V, to whose service he returned in the 1540s. The sumptuous Magnificat primi toni ( on the first tone Gombert wrote one Magnificat for each of the eight church modes) is composed in typical alternatim fashion: the oddnumbered verses are sung to plainchant, whilst the even-numbered ones are set as polyphony. We pair it with another hit chanson in similarly plangent vein: Doulce mémoire by the Frenchman Pierre Sandrin (c.1490 c.1561). Both of these works exist in numerous sixteenthcentury copies and arrangements, attesting to their widespread contemporary popularity. Josquin and Sandrin each worked extensively in Italy, as did the Netherlander Adrian Willaert (c.1490 1562), who was hugely influential in his role as maestro di cappella at St Mark s in Venice. His Vecchie letrose, a Neapolitan-style villanescha, provides a thoroughly irreverent antidote to the mournful chansons which surround it. The Phoenix and the Turtle was recently composed for Stile Antico by Huw Watkins (b.1976). It is a setting of an enigmatic poem by William Shakespeare, which ostensibly tells of the funeral rites of two birds, but is surely allegorical. Some scholars have contended that Shakespeare might have been a Catholic sympathiser, and that this text should be read as referring to Catholic figures perhaps the Catholic martyr Anne Line (c.1563 1601) whose husband had died in Flanders in 1594. In that case, the bird of loudest lay of the opening stanza is surely a reference to William Byrd ( lay is an old word for a song), whose Catholic connections were an open secret. Watkins depicts vividly the bustle of the funeral arrangements, before clothing Shakespeare s concluding threnos in music of tender lyricism. We conclude with three works by Spanish composers, each appropriate to the season of Passiontide. Cristóbal de Morales (c.1500 1553) was the first great composer of the Spanish Renaissance, working in Ávila, Toledo and Málaga, as well as for the papal 10

His O crux, ave, a meditation on the cross of Christ, unfolds long contrapuntal lines with masterful control, building inexorable emotional intensity. Tomás Luis de Victoria (c.1548 1611) spent a large portion of his career in Rome, gaining a reputation as one of the finest composers of his day. O vos omnes is taken from his Tenebrae Responsories and was intended for performance on Good Friday. The liturgy places anguished words from the book of Lamentations into the mouth of the crucified Christ, and Victoria responds with music of great rhetorical impact. Finally comes the joy of Easter morning, in the form of the sunny Maria Magdalene by Francisco Guerrero (1528 1599), telling of the arrival of the two women to find Christ s tomb empty. 塔利斯合唱團簡介 About Tallis Vocalis 塔利斯合唱團是香港首個致力演繹早期及文藝復興音樂的合唱團體, 由本地資深合唱界工作者蔡明翰先生創立 合唱團主力演繹十五及十六世紀文藝復興複調音樂, 亦會間中演唱早期巴洛克和現代作品 合唱團於 2014 年舉行了創團音樂會, 在英國古風合唱團的安德魯 格里菲斯指揮下演唱英國文藝復興音樂 ;2015 及 2016 年分別與英國指揮家克里斯多夫 華生及傑佛里 韋伯合作演出 ;2017 年在法國五月藝術節中首度亮相, 於愛德華 域咸指揮下演唱文藝復興佛萊德樂派音樂 ; 同年十月與世界著名的早期音樂合唱組合塔利斯學者的總監彼得 菲利普斯合作, 演唱拜爾德及帕特的合唱作品 合唱團近期亦擴闊表演領域, 與其他表演團體合作, 包括本地著名當代舞蹈家 Christine He 及香港城市室樂團 Tallis Vocalis is Hong Kong s first vocal ensemble dedicated to the performance of early and Renaissance music. Founded by local choral enthusiast Raymond Choi, the ensemble focuses on Renaissance polyphony of the 15th and 16th centuries, with the occasional foray into early Baroque and contemporary works. In 2014 Tallis Vocalis gave its inaugural concert with British conductor Andrew Griffiths from Stile Antico in a programme of English Tudor works. In subsequent years there have been collaborations with British conductors Christopher Watson and Geoffrey Webber. In 2017 the ensemble made its debut in Le French May Festival with a Franco-Flemish programme featuring Josquin des Prez conducted by Edward Wickham. Later that year the ensemble worked with Peter Phillips, director of the worldfamous Tallis Scholars, in a concert of music by William Byrd and Arvo Pärt. Recently they have expanded their horizons by collaborating with renowned contemporary dancer Christine He and with the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong. 20
