$2.80 Gen. (C.) PARACLETE PRESS Dixit minus Pro SSATB a cappella Francisco Guerrero (15271599) Eted and Transcribed by nald Jas
Francisco Guerrero (1527 1599) Francisco Guerrero was the most Spanish of the three great Iberian compors of the sixteenth cenry, the other two being Morales and Victoria. He was born in 1527 in Seville. Apart from the three years as Chapel Master (Maestro de Capilla) at Jaén during his late teen years (1546 1549), where he was a protégé of Morales, the Chapel Master of Toledo Cathedral, he spent his life in the employ of Seville Cathedral, first as a singer in the choir, then as Chapel Master. This d not prevent his going away or even abroad from ti to ti: to northern Spain to one of the brides for the Royal Court; to Venice and Ro to correct proofs; to Lisbon to prent a book of his own music and the Holy Land. His travel book on the Holy Land is interesting but has few references to music. Apart from periods spent in prisons of various sorts and fighting pirates off the coast of France, he spent his ti at Seville Cathedral, where he was in the habit of spensing charity every day. The Sacrae Cantiones of 1555, compled and published when the compor was 28 years old, is the earliest of his many compositions to co down to us. This ion was made from a microfilm of a very well prerved t of partbooks in the posssion of the Hispanic Sociy of New York. The collection of 32 mots begins and ends with Pater noster, the first for four voices and the last for eight. The first fourteen of the mots are for four voices, and the remainder, apart from the Pater noster, are for five voices. Of the latter, the first eight mots are canonic (as is also the Pater noster), and we e the crowning achievent of this first publication of the young genius who went on to write and publish, in his lifi, many more collections of music, both sacred and cular. Dixit minus Pro is t as a canon bween first and cond trebles. The words co from St. John, chapter 21, vers 1921 where The Lord saith unto Per, Follow an obvious ca for canonic treatnt. The remaining ven canonic mots have an increasing interval of canon the cond mot has a canon at the cond; the third, a canon at the third and so on. Guerrero choos words that express the canons so that in Ambulans Jes, a canon at the cond, Jes cos upon two brothers and says Follow. The third, Trahe post te, is a canon at the third becau the Virgin is Mother, Daughter and Spou. nald Jas After sdying Music as a Choral scholar at Cambridge University, nald Jas started his professional career as the Director of Music of the Enburgh Academy and conductor of both the Enburgh Symphony Orchestra and the City of Enburgh Band. He was also the Director of Music of Palrston Place Church, an important church in Enburgh's West End. Mr. Jas then joined the BBC Rao's Music Departnt in London as a producer and also conducted the New London Singers. He beca Director of Music at St. Jude's Church with a fine organ and a professional choir at his sposal. Subquently as a lecrer, he joined the faculty of the University of Exer and rected the Exer University Singers, who won the Ro Bowl in the BBC International Compition, L the People Sing. He was also Director of the University Opera Group and of the University Players, an enmble of as many as fifteen players specializing in the music of the venteenth and eighteenth cenries. He was, at the sa ti, organist and choirmaster of the main church in Dawlish for ven years and the Director of Music in the main church at Cron. As an examiner of the Associated Board and as an adjucator at Music Festivals, he has visited cities throughout the United Kingdom as well as Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong, the countries of the Middle East, Malta, Germany and Canada where he adjucated at the major Festivals in Winnepeg and Toronto. Mr. Jas is now freelancing as a compor, arranger, paleographer and conductor.
NOTES All the note lengths have been halved. [ ] is ud where the printer ud uj to incate a repition of the text. ( ) is ud where the or considers repition of the text desirable. Dynamics are at the scrion of the conductor. A line joining two [or more] notes (e.g., Bar 37/38 Bass) incates a ligare. MUSICA FICTA This is a system whereby accidentals were added by the perforrs rather than by the compor. The conventions governing the adtions were so well known to perforrs of the ti that compors saw no need to include them in the score. It was also governed by the conventions particular to a place in which a piece was being perford. This has given ri to much speculation on the part of modern ors as to which accidentals were added and where, which, in rn, has often led to the inclusion of too many accidentals, thus destroying the esntially modal character of the music. In other words, the music has been tonalized. Accidentals in the stave are original. Accidentals above the notes are orial they refer to Musica Ficta.
