If yu are a newer player wh has nt perfrmed with us, this is a gd way t jump int it. The playlist is shrt. It is als an pprtunity t pay it frward and share ur wnderful music, instruments and jy f playing with thers. S either e-mail me r sign up t play. Speaking f playlists, the Sept-Nvember playlist is in this newsletter. Be sure t lk it ver and practice any tunes that are new t yu r yu may be rusty n. Wrking Hliday Tune playlist is als in this newsletter. If yu are a drpbx user, make sure yu have the latest versin f the tunes. If yu are a hardcpy persn, I will prvide packets f the tunes t handut. There is a sign-up sheet t let me knw wh needs this. Just a caveat: this is the first versin. As practices cmmence and changes ccur, the list will evlve. WORKSHOP September 21 at 6:00. Fr any persn wh may want t play any/all f ur hliday play dates and fr all instruments, we will wrk n starts (sme f which can be played by ther instruments besides HD) s that mre than ne persn can start any tune. The gal is t lessen the pressure n any ne persn r avid a situatin where a tune can t be played because the starter isn t there. If there is time, we will take a lk at a few pssible new tunes and talk abut hw we might play ld tunes with a new twist. If yu need a hard-cpy f the music, please let me knw s I can create a cpy fr yu. HOLIDAY PRACTICES Three practice/rehearsals are in the wrks: Tuesday Octber 10, Thursdays Octber 26 and Nvember 9. Everyne s input helps make the final prduct. Last year the practices really paid ff. Our perfrmances were well-attended and we received standing vatins at 3 f them! The first (and nt last) playlist is in Drpbx. These are mdified as we fine tune in rehearsals. TUNE f the MONTH Last mnth Black Cat Schttische was intrduced. A fun tune, its minr key evkes a Hallweeny feeling. Call fr it at jams and let s get t where it can be n a future playlist. MUSIC CORRECTIONS Every s ften a mistake is fund in a tune usually a chrd. If yu spt smething that needs crrectin, let Marsha r Karen Turner knw s it can be crrected. Check Drpbx fr the latest and make sure yur music is up t date. At Midland, smene had an uncrrected versin f ne f the tunes. NEW TUNES One f the jys f ging t summer festivals is being intrduced t new tunes, new ideas and different appraches. Sme f yu have graciusly given me cpies f tunes yu think SSDS
wuld like. I am happy t receive them and keep a list/cllectin t tap int as we add t ur library f tunes. The factrs in cnsideratin when I add smething include: an upcming seasn (ex: Black Cat Schttische/Hallween r Lavender Blue/Valentines), variety f temps (nt all waltzes, reels r jigs), different keys (everything in ne key gets bring and fails t use the breadth f ur instruments), and whether the tune lends itself t a jam sessin (sme tunes wrk better as sl effrts). THE IMPORTANCE OF SSDS PERFORMANCES TO OUR CLUB - Our club earns mney frm ur playdates. Half f the earnings frm these perfrmances is distributed amng thse wh play. The ther half ges t supprting club functins: the pizza/salad fr Variety Night, Myers Lake, Club Picnic and ur Banquet. Yes, everyne pays annual dues - but that apprx. $1400 a year des nt g very far, if yu cnsider $800-1000 is dnated t the church fr using their facility. The perfrmances during the hliday seasn cmprise almst half f yearly playdates. Supprting this aspect f the club is imprtant. Supprt it by prmting it t thers. If yu belng t anther grup r rganizatin that has an event ur music wuld enhance prmte us t them. Keep a few f ur brchures t hand ut. We have dne art shws, banquets, special event celebratins, hmecmings, etc. If yu attend a festival r event that might be a fit fr SSDS, get cntact infrmatin and give it t the VP-Business. Supprt it by signing up t play when and if yu can. If yu sign up, it is imprtant t knw the tunes n the play list and be prepared t play them at the right temp. If yu cannt d the meldy, then wrk n harmny r back-up. Check the signup lists fr ntes as t dress, time and ther particulars (carpling, parking). Cme at the time stated with yur instrument in tune. SSDS Perfrmances are fun and IMPORTANT! MIDLAND MUSINGS Smaller and mre laid back than Evart, it is a nice music festival. There are plenty f htels and restaurants in the area fr thse wh dn t camp. The nights gt cld! But the music was ht lt f jamming. We put the SSDS EZ up canpy t gd use and had 3 gd jams jined by friends frm Uncle Carl s, Thrnapple Valley and ther places. Peple thanked us fr a great jam that was pen, inclusive and welcming. In fact, there were a lt f jams ging n. All speeds and styles (ld-timey, Celtic, traditins) it was a musical buffet.
